Reflexiones sobre Job. En torno al problema del mal, el sufrimiento del justo y la Teodicea

El Libro de Job constituye un documento privilegiado para pensar el problema del sufrimiento del justo y el dolor del inocente en relación con el problema más general de la justificación de Dios ante la existencia del mal, que es el tema central de la Teodicea. ¿Por qué ha de sufrir el justo? En el presente texto, más que intentar dar respuesta a esta pregunta, intentamos mostrar cómo, en la interpelación de Job a su Dios, un occidental puede reconocer insospechadamente la especificidad misma de su concepción de la moral, puede identificar las condiciones bajo las cuales lo moral es pensado en Occidente. Se pretende poner de manifiesto las razones por las que la actitud de Job ante el Todopoderoso resulta ejemplar para Occidente. Y, de paso, se pretende igualmente mostrar cómo el Libro de Job contribuye a destacar la diferencia esencial entre el espíritu medio-oriental del judaísmo y el occidental greco-cristiano. La intención del texto es, en definitiva, llamar la atención sobre el aspecto del episodio de Job por el que éste, como Sócrates o Jesús, escapa a la voracidad de la historia y deviene para siempre un contemporáneo.The book of Job constitutes a privileged document to think the problem that arises from the suffering inflicted by God upon the righteous man and the grief that He lays upon the innocent, as related with the more general problem of God’s justification in view of existence of evil, which makes up the subject-matter of theodicy. Why should an upright man be put to suffering? Rather than an endeavour to answer this question, what is to be found in this text is an attempt to show how, in Job’s asking his God, the Western man can unexpectedly recognize the selfsame quiddity of his concpetion of morals, as well as identify the conditions under which moral thought is achieved in the West. What is aimed at, is to put forth the reasons why Job’s attitude towards the Almighty becomes exemplary for the West. A bypurpose is also that of showing to what extent the Book of Job helps to emphasize the essential difference between two kinds of mind, that of the Middle-East Judaism, and that of the Western Greek-Christian tradition. The text attempts lastly to draw attention on a feature that enables Job, like Socrates and Jesus, to escape History’s voracity and become our contemporary for ever

The new Euskalmet coastal–maritime warning system

This work presents the main characteristics of the Basque Meteorology Agency (Euskalmet) maritime–coastal risk warning system, with special emphasis on the latest updates, including a clear differentiation on specific warning messages addressing sea conditions for navigation purposes in the first 2 nautical miles, and expected coastal impacts. Some details of the warning bulletin for maritime and coastal risk situations are also presented, together with other communication products and strategies used in coastal and maritime severe episodes at the Basque coast. Today, three different aspects are included in the coastal–maritime risk warning system in Basque Country, related to the main potential severe events that affecting coastal activities. – "Galerna" risk relates to a sudden wind reversal that can severely affect coastal navigation and recreational activities. – "Navigation" risk relates to severe sea state conditions for 0–2 miles, affecting different navigation activities. – "Coastal impact" risk relates to adverse wave characteristics and tidal surges that induce flooding events and different impacts in littoral areas.The authors would like to thank Emergencies and Meteorology Directorate – Security Department alerting for the dangerousness of temporal coincidence – Basque Government for public provision of data and operational of the key factors. service financial support

KOSTASystem, a multipurpose coastal videometry system

This contribution presents the KOSTASystem technology, a multipurpose coastal videometry system. It is implemented in 20 operational stations distributed along the Basque Coast (Spain), covering urban and natural beaches, port protection structures and natural coastal stretches. The purpose of this technology is to provide basic quantitative and qualitative data for coastal management applications. The most representative advances are related to the hardware, with the development of autonomous photovoltaic stations, and to the software, developing several tools for the calibration and restitution of the images and for the extraction of the information used in the different applications. In the longterm, within a climate change context, the most essential results have been obtained in the monitoring of beach morphology. In the short-term, the camera network works under extreme wave conditions, monitoring wave overtopping and flooding. Apart from this, it is also used for the daily management of the beaches in the summer season, improving the safety by detecting and predicting rip currents and providing information about beach user density (BUD). Finally, the constant improvement of this technology and its applications help to grow and collaborate within the European framework of the coastal observation network.Peer Reviewe

A novel and multi-purpose ASV for the Basque Coast: design, experimental testing, and main challenges

Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) have become a powerful tool for marine research due to their capability to make observations over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. ASVs provide accurate, high-resolution, continuous data, benefiting environmental monitoring by decreasing the costs when compared to fully manned vessels. In the framework of Oarsoaldea Blue Hub project, a 6 m length electrical ASV equipped with acoustic sensors for measuring water currents and fish biomass has been designed and developed as a solution for more efficient oceanographic observations in the coastal area.Peer Reviewe

Mathematical Modeling of Oscillating Water Columns Wave-Structure Interaction in Ocean Energy Plants

Oscillating Water Column (OWC)-based power take-off systems are one of the potential solutions to the current energy problems arising from the use of nuclear fission and the consumption of fossil fuels. This kind of energy converter turns wave energy into electric power by means of three different stages: firstly wave energy is transformed into pneumatic energy in the OWC chamber, and then a turbine turns it into mechanical energy and finally the turbogenerator module attached to the turbine creates electric power from the rotational mechanical energy. To date, capture chambers have been the least studied part. In this context, this paper presents an analytical model describing the dynamic behavior of the capture chamber, encompassing the wave motion and its interaction with the OWC structure and turbogenerator module. The model is tested for the case of the Mutriku wave power plant by means of experimental results. For this purpose, representative case studies are selected from wave and pressure drop input-output data. The results show an excellent matching rate between the values predicted by the model and the experimental measured data with a small bounded error in all cases, so that the validity of the proposed model is proven
