    The Effect of Different Training Loads on the Lung Health of Competitive Youth Swimmers

Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), airway inflammation, and respiratory symptoms are common in competitive swimmers, however it is unclear how volume and intensity of training exacerbate these problems. Thus, our purpose was to measure AHR, inflammation, and respiratory symptoms after low, moderate, and high training loads in swimmers. Competitive youth swimmers (n=8) completed nine weeks of training split into three blocks (Low, Moderate, and High intensity). Spirometry at rest and post-bronchial provocation [Eucapnic Voluntary Hyperpnea (EVH)] and Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) were completed at the end of each training block. A weekly self-report questionnaire determined respiratory symptoms. Session Rating of Perceived Exertion (sRPE) quantified internal training loads. Internal load was significantly lower after Moderate training (4840 Ā± 971 AU) than after High training (5852 Ā± 737 AU) (p= 0.02, d= 1.17). Pre-EVH FEV1was significantly decreased after Moderate (4.52 Ā± 0.69 L) compared to Low (4.74 Ā± 0.63 L) (p= 0.025, d= 0.326), but not different from High load. Post-EVH FeNO after Moderate training was significantly decreased (9.4 Ā± 4.9 ppb) compared to Low training (15.4 Ā± 3.6 ppb) (p= 0.012, r= 0.884).Respiratory symptom frequency was significantly correlated with percent decrease in FEV120 minutes post-EVH after Low and Moderate loads (both Ļ= -0.71, sig = 0.05), and after High load was significantly correlated with percent decrease in FEV1at 10 (Ļ= -0.74, sig = 0.03), 15 (Ļ= -0.91, sig = 0.00), and 20 minutes post (Ļ= -0.75, sig = 0.03). In conclusion, Moderate load training resulted in the worst lung health results, suggesting there may be factors other than the total amount of stress within training blocks that influence lung health. Further research is needed to determine the effect of manipulating specific acute training load variables on the lung health of swimmers

    A Model and Test of Individual and Organization Factors Influencing Individual Adaptation to Change

    This study analyzed the antecedents and outcomes of individual adaptation to a changing work environment. We developed and tested a model of both individual factors and organizational factors affecting individual responses to change. We hypothesized that individuals reporting higher levels of the antecedent variables would also report higher levels of adaptability. We also hypothesized better adaptors would perceive better work outcomes. The model was tested in a field study of 169 participants across four different organizations experiencing varying changes. Results indicated participation, role clarity, and optimism were positively related to adaptability. Further, we found that better adaptors were more satisfied with their jobs, were less likely to quit the organization, and perceived higher performance after the change. Change managers can take heart in that most of the variables associated with successful adaptation are under the organizationā€™s influence, so facilitating change is not an impossible task

    Do Female University Varsity Athletes Have a Greater Risk of Injury Within a Competitive Varsity Season?

Previous varsity sport injury research has analyzed how acute and chronic injury severity, type, and location differs between sport and sexes, with limited research in time to injury. Canadian university varsity sport injury research is especially sparse and mostly retrospective. Thus, we aimed to understand injury differences in male and female competitive university athletes competing in the same sport. Athletes who competed on the basketball, volleyball, soccer, ice hockey, football (male), rugby (female), and wrestling teams were eligible for the study. There were 182 male and 113 female athletes who provided informed consent to be prospectively followed over a season. Injury date, type, location, chronicity, and events missed due to injury were recorded on a weekly basis. Overall, the percentage of male (68.7%) and female (68.1%) athletes injured was not different. No overall sex differences (variables collapsed) were observed in injury chronicity, location, type, events lost, mean number of injuries, or time to injury. Within sport differences existed for mean number of injuries, injury location, type of injury, and events missed. Mean time to injury in female basketball (28 days) and volleyball athletes (14 days) was significantly shorter compared to male basketball (67 days) and volleyball (65 days). Time to a concussion was significantly shorter in females overall compared to males. These results indicate that Canadian female university age athletes are not inherently more susceptible to injury, but female athletes within certain sports may have increased injury risk which could shorten time to injury (basketball, volleyball) and increase the number of events missed due to injury (hockey)

    Tailoring temporal description logics for reasoning over temporal conceptual models

    Temporal data models have been used to describe how data can evolve in the context of temporal databases. Both the Extended Entity-Relationship (EER) model and the Unified Modelling Language (UML) have been temporally extended to design temporal databases. To automatically check quality properties of conceptual schemas various encoding to Description Logics (DLs) have been proposed in the literature. On the other hand, reasoning on temporally extended DLs turn out to be too complex for effective reasoning ranging from 2ExpTime up to undecidable languages. We propose here to temporalize the ā€˜light-weightā€™ DL-Lite logics obtaining nice computational results while still being able to represent various constraints of temporal conceptual models. In particular, we consider temporal extensions of DL-Lite^N_bool, which was shown to be adequate for capturing non-temporal conceptual models without relationship inclusion, and its fragment DL-Lite^N_core with most primitive concept inclusions, which are nevertheless enough to represent almost all types of atemporal constraints (apart from covering)

    The Forgotten Quail Decline: The Plight of Scaled Quail in Texas

    Several quail species are experiencing range-wide declines in the United States. The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) has garnered the most attention, both from a research and conservation perspective. The bobwhite decline in Texas, has resulted in considerable time and effort being devoted to research and management on the species due to its status as a highly popular and economically important game bird. This attention has been beneficial to bobwhite conservation and management but, an unfortunate consequence of this focus has been neglect of the scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) that has been declining at even a more alarming rate. Scaled quail, according to Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data, have declined at a rate of 5.1% per year in the Tamaulipan Biotic Province (southern Texas), the greatest of any region surveyed in its geographic range. Anecdotal reports of landowners have long noted the gradual disappearance of scaled quail and concomitant replacement with northern bobwhite throughout southern Texas, beginning since about the 1990s. Analysis of BBS data provides evidence for this replacement. Percent of quail detections in the core of the scaled quail range in the Tamaulipan Biotic Province were 80:20 (scaled quail: bobwhite) during the 1960s but currently represent about 5:95. In addition, the range of scaled quail has been contracting, moving progressively west with time. The species is no longer detected on the easternmost BBS routes in southern Texas

    Concussion competencies: a training model for school-based concussion management

    This study reports on the use of ten knowledge competencies related to the behavioral management of concussion in schools. Trainings using these competencies as learning objectives were delivered to school personnel. This aims of the use of competencies in this way are to streamline the education of key stakeholders, to establish clear roles and responsibilities for constituents and equip individuals working with students following a concussion with the relevant knowledge to optimize outcomes. The majority of participants, primarily speech language pathologists working as related service providers in the schoolswhere the trainings occurred, judged the use of the competencies to be informative and useful to their practice both immediately following the training and at a 5-month follow-up. The greatest gains in knowledge were noted by those participants self-reporting the least amount of knowledge pre-training. Participants also ranked the perceived value and relative importance of each of the ten competencies

    The Effect of in-Service Methodology on Learning Transfer for School Personnel Managing Students following Concussion

    Background: It is essential to increase the knowledge base of teachers involved in facilitating return to learning in middle school students following a concussion. However, the best method to enhance the transfer of learning for teachers remains to be elucidated. Application of Adult Learning Theory (ALT) is a plausible solution to this problem. Purpose: The purpose of this randomized post-test study was to examine the effects of ALTon the transfer of learning in teachers who work with individuals with concussion. Methods: A convenience sample of 169 teachers at four middle schools were randomized to receive an in-service regarding concussion management either in ALT or traditional lecture format. Vignettes approximating classroom practice evaluated learning transfer. Results: one-way between subjects ANOVA revealed no significant difference between the methods of educational delivery on group assessment scores (pĀ¼.22). Additionally, a regression analysis did not identify any demographic variables that predicted learning transfer (pĀ¼.65). A statistically significant difference existed for four questions (1, 4, 7, 25) between the groups (pĀ¼.03, .02, .01, .00, respectively). These vignettes were those that assessed information that was likely novel to the learner. Discussion: The current study demonstrated that ALT applied to teacher in-service did not impact transfer of learning immediately post training compared to a traditional lecture format. Future research should continue to examine the effects of various educational strategies to enhance learning transfer for teachers managing students in the classroom after concussion
