    V. vinifera L. 'Barbera', 'Nebbiolo di Dronero' and the crossbreed 'Albarossa', grown in Piedmont region, Italy, were characterized by the analysis of grape anthocyanins, using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and aromatic compounds using Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Five monomeric non-acylated anthocyanins, delphinidin-3-monoglucoside, cyanidin-3-monoglucoside, petunidin-3-monoglucoside, peonidin-3-monoglucoside, malvidin-3-monoglucoside, and the pool of acetic acid acylated anthocyanins and coumarate/caffeoate anthocyanins were detected, as well as the concentration of terpenes, norisoprenoids, alcohols and benzene compounds. Ratios between the different anthocyanin forms were used for varietal profiling, as well as ratios and concentrations of single or pooled aromatic compounds. 'Albarossa' had intermediate levels, between 'Barbera' and 'Nebbiolo di Dronero', of certain anthocyanins and aromas, due to the genetic relationships. &nbsp

    2-Increasing binary aggregation operators

    Get PDF
In this work we investigate the class of binary aggregation operators (=agops) satisfying the 2-increasing property, obtaining some characterizations for agops having other special properties (e.g., quasi-arithmetic mean, Choquet-integral based, modularity) and presenting some construction methods. In particular, the notion of P-increasing function is used in order to characterize the composition of 2-increasing agops. The lattice structure (with respect to the pointwise order) of some subclasses of 2-increasing agops is presented. Finally, a method is given for constructing copulas beginning from 2- increasing and 1-Lipschitz agops

Radial force control of Multi-Sector Permanent Magnet machines considering radial rotor displacement

    Get PDF
A mathematical model enabling to predict the electromagnetic x-y forces and torque for a given input current in a Multi-Sector Permanent Magnet Synchronous (MSPMS) machine is presented. The rotor static eccentricity is also accounted and the analytical calculations are validated by means Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Furthermore, a novel force and torque control is proposed based on input current minimization and is applied to suppress the Unbalanced Magnetic Pull (UMP) caused by the rotor eccentricity. The effective operation of the force suppression technique is verified by means of FEA

SUSCEPTIBILITY MAPPING OF SHALLOW LANDSLIDES INDUCING DEBRIS FLOWS: A COMPARISON OF PHYSICS-BASED APPROACHES

The assessment of timing and potential locations of rainfallinduced shallow landslides through mathematical models represents a challenge for the assessment of landslide hazard, especially in cases with limited or not available data. In fact, modeling slope hydrological response and stability requires accurate estimates of unsaturated/saturated hydraulic and geotechnical properties of materials involved in landsliding, as well as climate and topography. Such aspect is relevant for the prediction of location and timing of landslide events, which is greatly needed to reduce their catastrophic effects in terms of economic losses and casualties. To such a scope, we present the comparison of results of two physics-based models applied to the assessment of susceptibility to shallow rainfall-induced landslides in Valtellina region (northern Italy). The analyses were carried out considering effects of availability, resolution and type of data concerning spatial distribution, thickness and properties of soils coverings. For such a scope, the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-Based Regional Slope-Stability (TRIGRS) and the Climatic Rainfall Hydrogeological Modeling Experiment (CHRyME) models were considered. The study emphasizes issues in performing distributed numerical slope stability modeling depending on the availability of spatially distributed soil properties which hamper the quality of physic-based models. Further analyses aimed at the probabilistic assessment of landslide spatial distribution, related to a specific value of rainfall threshold, can be considered as potentially applicable to multi-scale landslide hazard mapping and extendable to other similar mountainous frameworks

On the influence of the magnetic field of the GSI experimental storage ring on the time-modulation of the EC-decay rates of the H-like mother ions

We investigate the influence of the magnetic field of the Experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI on the periodic time-dependence of the orbital K-shell electron capture decay (EC(EC) rates of the H--like heavy ions. We approximate the magnetic field of the ESR by a uniform magnetic field. Unlike the assertion by Lambiase et al., arXiv: 0811.2302 [nucl-th], we show that a motion of the H-like heavy ion in a uniform magnetic field cannot be the origin of the periodic time-dependence of the EC-decay rates of the H-like heavy ions.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur

Use of thyroid hormones in hypothyroid and euthyroid patients: A survey of members of the Endocrine Society of Australia

\ua9 2024 The Authors. Clinical Endocrinology published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Objective: Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine condition usually managed with levothyroxine (LT4). However, controversy remains around the use of liothyronine (LT3). We aimed to investigate the practices of Australian endocrinologists when managing patients with hypothyroidism, their use of LT3 + LT4 combination therapy and use of thyroid hormones in euthyroid patients. Design and Participants: Members of the Endocrine Society of Australia (ESA) were invited to participate in an online questionnaire. Measurements: We analysed questionnaires that had complete demographic data. Results: Eighty-seven questionnaires fulfilled the criteria. LT4 was used as first line treatment for hypothyroidism by all respondents. Only 45% reported that their patients were dispensed the brand of LT4 that they recommend. LT3 (alone or in combination) was prescribed by 44% in their clinical practice. Although 49% of respondents would consider LT3 + LT4 in patients with normal TSH who had ongoing symptoms of hypothyroidism, the inability of LT4 to restore normal physiology was ranked the least likely explanation for persistent symptoms and only 32% would consider it for themselves if they were diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The majority (55%), in accordance with evidence, would not prescribe thyroid hormone to euthyroid individuals but 39% would consider use in euthyroid female infertility with high levels of thyroid antibodies and 11% in euthyroid patients with a simple goitre growing over time. LT4 use in pregnancy was variable among members. Conclusions: Australian endocrinologists mostly follow international guidelines when prescribing thyroid hormone therapy and many prescribe combination LT3 and LT4 therapy, particularly for patients who remain symptomatic on LT4 monotherapy. Prescribing practices are largely similar to other countries who have completed similar questionnaires

Comparative analysis of eliciting capacity of raw and roasted peanuts: the role of gastrointestinal digestion

    Get PDF
This study investigated the simultaneous impact of food matrix and processing on the food allergy eliciting capacity of peanuts in a physiologically relevant context. Whole raw and roasted peanuts were subjected to in vitro digestion combining the harmonized oral-gastric-duodenal digestion models with brush border membrane enzymes (BBM) to simulate the jejunal degradation of peptides. SDS-PAGE and HPLC analysis showed that roasting increased digestibility of peanuts and this trend was even more evident after BBM degradation. The eliciting properties of raw and roasted peanuts were assessed by Rat Basophil Leukemia assay in the presence of sera from peanut-allergic patients. As general features, the BBM digestion reduced allergenicity of roasted peanuts compared to the raw counterpart, suggesting that intestinal peptidases effectively contribute to further destroy specific domains of peanut allergens. These findings provide new and more realistic insights in the stability of peanut allergens within their natural matrix

The Effect of a Community-Based, Primary Health Care Exercise Program on Inflammatory Biomarkers and Hormone Levels

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of a community-based exercise program in primary care on inflammatory biomarkers and hormone levels. The 1-year quasiexperimental study involved 13 women (mean age = 56.8 ± 11.4 years) and it was developed in two basic health care units in Rio Claro City, Brazil. The physical exercise intervention was comprised of two, 60-minute sessions/week. The inflammatory biomarkers were measured at baseline, 6 months, and 1 year. Repeated measures ANOVA analyses indicated that the intervention was effective in reducing CRP and TNFα after 1 year compared to baseline and 6 months . There were no changes in IL10, IL6, and insulin after 1 year. However, leptin significantly increased at 1 year . The major finding of this study is that a community-based exercise program can result in a decrease or maintenance of inflammatory biomarkers after 1 year, and thus has the potential to be a viable public health approach for chronic disease prevention
