Unravelling noun strings: toward an approach to the description of complex noun phrases in technical writing

In this article we go into a thorough analysis of complex noun compounds in technical texts. We understand that a noun compound is a unit consisting of two or more nouns, plus such other parts of speech as are necessary, that together express a "single no un" idea or concept. We have analysed various examples taken randomly from different engineering publications in order to describe their use and, rather often, abuse in this context. The typology and main characteristics of complex noun compounds in ESP communication are discussed. Noun strings are not only specifically useful for enabling more concise, accurate and precise communication, but also because they often help to fill terminology gaps which refer to new concepts, improvements or discoveries. Besides, their semantic potential and high specialization are characteristics very much valued by technical writers.

Carol Ann Duffy’s poetry as a return to the Kristevian chora

Producción CientíficaNeedless to say that without the struggle of suffragists and existential feminists, women would have not participated in the political and legal systems propitiated via the vote. Needless to say either that without the battles waged by women after May 1968 and the work of committed scholars, women would have not obtained access to any sociocultural recognition. These feminist consecutions are easily found today in academic manuals about the history of feminism, its interdisciplinarity and intertextuality, its general effects and consequences upon groups of average women. However (and this is the consideration from which the questions raised in this paper have emerged), it is not so easy to come across rigorous academic examinations of how feminism has affected (if it has and to what extent) to particular women as individuals; to women belonging neither to political nor academic circles. This presentation describes our experience as teachers of Spanish and English in Media Studies at university level. We will present our initial approach and objectives, the theoretical methodology, the description of the primary material and the methodological application of this primary material. We will describe some of the problems which have appeared, as well as detail our way of tackling and solving them from a contrastive point of view, considering that the students enrolled in this course are native Spanish speakers, as well as a considerable number of Erasmus students, among which there are various native English speakers

Bruise Development and Fruit Response of Pear (cv.'Blanquilla') under Impact Conditions

Pear fruits cv. 'Blanquilla', at various ripening stages, were studied under impact conditions. A 50-6-g spherical steel indentator, with a radius of curvature of 0-94 cm, was dropped on to the fruit from three heights: 4, 6 and 10 cm (0-0199, 0-0299 and 0-0499 J). The variables measured were analyzed. All variables were observed to be related to the impact energy except impact duration, which was related to the fruit firmness. Bruising correlated with impact energy when considering different heights, but not with any specific variable when studying the impact phenomenon at individual heights; however, there was a clear correlation between impact bruising and firmness. Three bruise shapes were observed, corresponding to preclimacteric, climacteric and postclimacteric fruits; a theory for this response is offered. According to the results, the impact response in postclimacteric pear fruits (with firmness values of less than 25 N, and a maturity index above 55) may be explained by the role played by the skin rather than by the pulp

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells characterization and transplantation in an animal model of congenital hydrocephalus

Congenital hydrocephalus is a disorder presenting a degeneration of the periventricular cerebral parenchyma and the white matter, which causes significant mortality and life-long neurological complications. There are currently no effective therapies for congenital hydrocephalus. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC) are considered as a potential therapeutic tool in neurodegenerative diseases, due to their ability to migrate to degenerated tissues and the production of growth factors. In the present study, using an animal model of congenital hydrocephalus, the hyh mouse, it has been studied the capacity of the BM-MSC to reach the degenerated regions exhibiting glial reactions and their probable neuroprotector effects. The BM-MSC were isolated from two different sources: a) transgenic mice expressing the monomeric red fluorescent protein (mRFP1); b) wild type mice. In the second case, the BM-MSC were labelled in vitro using bromodeoxyuridine, a fluorescent cell tracker and the lipophilic DiR. Before application, the cells were analysed using flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. The BM-MSC were injected into the retro-orbital sinus or into the lateral ventricle of hyh mice. After 24/96 hours of administration, the BM-MSC were detected under light, confocal and electron microscopes. The injected BM-MSC reached the degenerated periventricular regions and the disrupted neurogenic niches. They were detected in the periventricular parenchyma, around periventricular blood vessels and in the ventral meninges. Most of the applied BM-MSC expressed the glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), in the same way as the periventricular reactive astrocytes, suggesting a possible neuroprotector effect.FIS (Instituto de Salud Carlos III)-FEDER a AJJ.
