    Eccentricity Growth Rates of Tidally Distorted Discs

    We consider discs that orbit a central object and are tidally perturbed by a circular orbit companion. Such discs are sometimes subject to an eccentric instability due to the effects of certain resonances. Eccentric instabilities may be present in planetary rings perturbed by satellites, protostellar discs perturbed by planets, and discs in binary star systems. Although the basic mechanism for eccentric instability is well understood, the detailed response of a gaseous disc to such an instability is not understood. We apply a linear eccentricity evolution equation developed by Goodchild and Ogilvie. We explore how the eccentricity is distributed in such a disc and how the distribution in turn affects the instability growth rate for a range of disc properties. We identify a disc mode, termed the superhump mode, that is likely at work in the superhump binary star case. The mode results from the excitation of the fundamental free precession mode. We determine an analytic expression for the fundamental free mode precession rate that is applicable to a sufficiently cool disc. Depending on the disc sound speed and disc edge location, other eccentric modes can grow faster than the superhump mode and dominate.Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures to be published on MNRA

    Evolution of Giant Planets in Eccentric Disks

    We investigate the interaction between a giant planet and a viscous circumstellar disk by means of high-resolution, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations. We consider planet masses that range from 1 to 3 Jupiter masses (Mjup) and initial orbital eccentricities that range from 0 to 0.4. We find that a planet can cause eccentricity growth in a disk region adjacent to the planet's orbit, even if the planet's orbit is circular. Disk-planet interactions lead to growth in a planet's orbital eccentricity. The orbital eccentricities of a 2 Mjup and a 3 Mjup planet increase from 0 to 0.11 within about 3000 orbits. Over a similar time period, the orbital eccentricity of a 1 Mjup planet grows from 0 to 0.02. For a case of a 1 Mjup planet with an initial eccentricity of 0.01, the orbital eccentricity grows to 0.09 over 4000 orbits. Radial migration is directed inwards, but slows considerably as a planet's orbit becomes eccentric. If a planet's orbital eccentricity becomes sufficiently large, e > ~0.2, migration can reverse and so be directed outwards. The accretion rate towards a planet depends on both the disk and the planet orbital eccentricity and is pulsed over the orbital period. Planet mass growth rates increase with planet orbital eccentricity. For e~0.2 the mass growth rate of a planet increases by approximately 30% above the value for e=0. For e > ~0.1, most of the accretion within the planet's Roche lobe occurs when the planet is near the apocenter. Similar accretion modulation occurs for flow at the inner disk boundary which represents accretion toward the star.Comment: 20 pages 16 figures, 3 tables.     Investigation of the leukaemic activity of MLL-fusions in human haematopoietic cells

    The mixed lineage leukaemia (MLL) gene is frequently the target of chromosomal translocation in infant leukaemia. Translocation results in an in-frame chimeric fusion gene which is implicated in both ALL and AML, with particularly poor prognoses. It is widely accepted that MLL has a crucial role in regulating haematopoiesis. Our lab has previously developed a murine model for conditional expression of MLL-fusions to establish a list of transcriptional target genes using Affymetrix GeneChip analysis. In order to study the role of MLL-fusion target genes in human leukaemia cells, we generated four independent immortalised myeloid cell lines from human cord blood, using the MLL-AF9 fusion, by means of lentiviral transduction. The transduced cells proliferated exponentially in liquid culture and were found to cause leukaemia upon xenotransplantation into immunodeficient mice. One of the target genes up-regulated by the MLL-fusions, RUVBL2, encodes an ATPase belonging to AAA+ family that has multiple roles in telomerase and chromatin-remodelling complexes. In this study, we demonstrate that RUVBL2 is also up-regulated by MLL-AF9 in human immortalised myeloid cells. shRNA knock down of RUVBL2 expression in these cells, and in the human leukaemia cell line THP-1, results in decreased cell proliferation and clonogenic potential, accompanied by an increase in apoptosis and differentiation, as judged by CD15 expression. Furthermore, inhibition of RUVBL2 expression in THP-1 cells leads to a reduction in hTERT mRNA expression and telomerase activity. Together, these data demonstrate the requirement of RUVBL2 to mediate MLL-fusion induced telomerase activity in human cells, and suggest the possibility of targeting RUVBL2 as a potential therapeutic strategy for MLL-fusion associated leukaemia

Thailand is an example of a developing country where a huge number of products from various countries imported cosmetic products. Due to the competition in Thailand, cosmetic market is always very intense; therefore it is important for firms to understand the factors that affect the consumers purchasing behaviour. At the same time, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been one of the most popular theme for academics and marketers when they analyse its impact on consumers’ behaviour (Maignan and Ferrel, 2004; Smith, 2003). Does CSR have a positive impact on Thai consumers’ purchasing intention? To investigate this theme based on quantitative approach, we analyse the impact of CSR factor as an antecedent factor for Thai consumers’ attitudes towards cosmetic products, drawing the pathways resulting in their final decision of purchasing

    Gravitational level effects o optical properties of electrodeposited ZnO nanowire arrays

    The coupling phenomena between the interfacial reaction rate and the microstructural/morphological variation rate must be reasonably well controlled to fabricate nano/meso- structural devices in a large scale. Otherwise, the physical property uniformity inside the device is not guaranteed to lose its superiority in the market. Free standing ZnO nanowire array was successfully synthesized on ITO/FTO substrate by template-free method in Zn(NO3)2 aqueous solutions. Two types of electrode configurations were employed in order to quantitatively examine the effect of gravitational strength on electrodeposited ZnO nanowire array: (a) a horizontal cathode surface facing downward over an anode (C/A) and (b) an anode over a cathode (A/C). The former configuration may simulate the microgravitational environment, because macroscopic natural convection is not induced. PL of ZnO nanowire array was measured. More uniform nanowires are synthesized in C/A configuration than in A/C. Seeding ZnO nanoparticles on ITO/FTO substrate can control the diameter as well as the orientation.     Transport properties of the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12}

    We have measured the electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance (MR) on single crystals of PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12}, LaOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} and NdOs4_{4}Sb12_{12}. All the transport properties in PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} are similar to those in LaOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} and NdOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} at high temperatures, indicating the localized character of 4ff-electrons. The transverse MR both in LaOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} and PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} tends to saturate for wide field directions, indicating these compounds to be uncompensated metals with no open orbit. We have determined the phase diagram of the field induced ordered phase by the MR measurement for all the principle field directions, which indicates an unambiguous evidence for the Γ1\Gamma_{\rm 1} singlet crystalline electric field ground state.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Physical Review

    Diversity of Aphyllophorales Fungi Isolated From Tanjung Puting National Park, Central Kalimantan and Its Potentiality for Lignin Decomposition

    A total of fifty-three samples of fungal basidiocarp were collected from peat area in Tanjung Puting National Park, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. These samples are mostly determined to genus until more studies are available.The fungi were isolated on CMA medium then the isolated strains were purified on PDA medium. The fungi belong to at least 3 families of Aphyllophorales, however there were a wide diversity in the genus with respect to macroscopic examination.An agar plate screening procedures was developed for the rapid selection of fungi and estimation of their capacity for lignin-decomposer. The test is based on the visualization and interpretation of the formation of halo zone or decolourization process in well-defined agar medium containing Poly R-478. The selected isolates were also tested in to rhemazol brilliant blue R salt (RBBR) medium. Five isolates had the ability to decolourize either Poly R-478 or RBBR. These isolates showed a qualitative lignin decomposition although a comparative study of selected fungi revealed the difference potentiality. The highest loss of lignin was 28.18% and attempts have been made to determine the unidentified fungi, which is resupinate type, by direct sequencing of 18s ribosomal DNA (rDNA)
