    Estudio de la mortalidad de los médicos en el estado de São Paulo, Brasil, durante el período de 2000 a 2009

    This study presents the distribution of causes of death among physicians in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, from 2000 to 2009. The study used the database of the Mortality Information System, Secretariat of Health Surveillance, Brazilian Ministry of Health, limited to death certificates in which the item on occupation was reported as physician. Underlying causes of death were classified according to ICD-10 chapters. The study showed that cardiovascular diseases were the leading cause of death among physicians, followed by cancer and respiratory diseases. Under age 40, doctors of both genders died mainly from external causes. Among cancer deaths, breast cancer was the leading cause in women and lung cancer the first cause in men. The results show the need to promote adequate health habits and disease prevention among physicians, seeking to raise awareness in this group of professionals.El estudio presenta la distribución de las causas de muerte de los médicos en el estado de São Paulo, Brasil, entre los años 2000 y 2009. Se utilizó la base de datos del Sistema de Información sobre Mortalidad del Ministerio de Salud, limitándose a los certificados de defunción, cuya ocupación del finado figuraba como médico. Las principales causas de muerte fueron clasificadas de acuerdo con los capítulos del CIE-10. El estudio muestra que las enfermedades cardiovasculares son la principal causa de muerte entre los médicos durante la última década, seguido del cáncer y las enfermedades respiratorias. Las causas externas fueron las principales causas de muerte en menores de 40 años. El cáncer de mama es responsable de la mayoría de las muertes por cáncer entre las mujeres, mientras que entre los hombres el cáncer de pulmón ocupa el primer lugar. Se sugiere la necesidad de estimular los hábitos adecuados de salud y prevención de enfermedades entre los médicos, buscando informar y sensibilizar a este colectivo de profesionales.O presente estudo apresenta a distribuição das causas de morte de médicos do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, cujos óbitos ocorreram entre os anos de 2000 e 2009. Utilizou-se o banco de dados do Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade, do Ministério da Saúde, limitando-se às declarações de óbito cujo campo de ocupação estava preenchido como médico. As causas básicas de morte foram classificadas de acordo com os capítulos da CID-10. O estudo revela que doenças do aparelho circulatório foram a principal causa de morte entre os médicos na última década, seguidas das neoplasias e doenças do aparelho respiratório. As causas externas constituíram as principais causas de morte abaixo de 40 anos. Câncer da mama foi responsável pela maior parte dos óbitos por neoplasias entre mulheres, enquanto entre os homens a neoplasia de pulmão ocupou a primeira posição.     Characterization of the file-specific heat-treated ProTaper Ultimate rotary system

International Endodontic Journal published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of British Endodontic Society.Aim: To compare design, metallurgy and mechanical performance of the ProTaper (PT) Ultimate system with instruments of similar dimensions from the ProGlider, PT Gold and PT Universal systems. Methodology: New PT Ultimate instruments (n = 248) were compared with instruments of similar dimensions from ProGlider (n = 31), PT Gold (n = 155) and PT Universal (n = 155) systems regarding their number of spirals, helical angle, blade symmetry, tip geometry, surface finishing, nickel/titanium ratio, phase transformation temperatures and mechanical performance. One-way anova and nonparametric Mood's median tests were used for statistical comparison (α = 5%). Results: All instruments had symmetrical blades without radial lands or flat sides, similar surface finishing and an almost equiatomic nickel/titanium ratio, whilst the number of spirals, helical angles and the tip geometry were different. PT Ultimate instruments showed 3 distinct heat treatments that matched with the colour of their metal wire. Slider and ProGlider instruments had similar R-phase start (Rs) and R-phase finish (Rf) temperatures. SX, F1, F2, F3 and Shaper instruments showed equivalent heat treatments (Rs ~45.6°C and Rf ~28.3°C) that were similar to their PT Gold counterparts (Rs ~47.9°C and Rf ~28.2°C), but completely distinct to the PT Universal ones (Rs ~16.2°C and Rf ~−18.2°C). Amongst the PT Ultimate instruments, the lowest maximum torques were observed in the SX (0.44 N cm), Slider (0.45 N cm) and Shaper (0.60 N cm) instruments, whilst the highest was noted in the FXL (4.90 N cm). PT Ultimate Slider and ProGlider had similar torsional (~0.40 N cm) and bending loads (~145.0 gf) (p = 1.000), whilst the other PT Ultimate instruments showed statistically significantly lower maximum torque, higher angle of rotation and lower bending load (higher flexibility) than their counterparts of the PT Universal and PT Gold systems. Conclusions: The PT Ultimate system comprises instruments with 3 distinct heat treatments that showed similar phase transformation temperatures to their heat-treated analogues. PT Ultimate instruments presented lower torsional strength and superior flexibility than their counterparts, whilst maximum torque, angle of rotation and bending loads progressively increased with their sizes.publishersversionpublishe

    Phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of Rocha pear and other pear cultivars: a comparative study

    The phenolic profile and the antioxidant activity of Rocha pear, a Portuguese pear cultivar, were determined and compared with the commercially available pear varieties Cornice, Abate, General Leclerc and Passe Crassane. Phenolic composition of the methanolic extracts of these pears was determined by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD), while antioxidant activities were evaluated using three complementary test systems: DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing power capacity and beta-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching assay. When compared to the studied varieties, Rocha pear (peel and flesh) presented the highest content of total phenolics. Among them, chlorogenic, syringic, ferulic and coumaric acids, arbutin and (-)-epicatechin were detected as major components.     Beliefs on the local effects of climate change: causal attribution of flooding and shoreline retreat

    Adaptation to climate change is a process that should engage different participants, including not only researchers and technicians but also other stakeholders and local individuals, and, therefore, it is important to understand their beliefs on the local effects of climate change. Recent studies illustrate a linear relation between coastal distance and scepticism, which is lower in coastal zones than in inland. A possible explanation is that people living inland do not experience (or do not perceive) particular natural hazards as being caused by climate change, or attribute the natural hazards to other causes, apart from climate change. This might influence the relative importance of dealing with direct anthropogenic effects and planning adaptation to climate change. Therefore, the goal of this work was to explore this effect by comparing beliefs on the local effects of climate change in Aveiro region (Portugal), specifically in Baixo Vouga Lagunar (BVL, located in the inner side of Ria de Aveiro Coastal Lagoon, 10 km distance from the coast) with the nearby coastal zone between Esmoriz and Vagueira settlements. Stakeholders were interviewed and local individuals were surveyed in order to explore causal attributions towards relevant local environmental problems and compare with data available from the coastal zone. Natural hazards concerned flooding in BVL and shoreline retreat in the coastal zone. Results suggest that in BVL both stakeholders and local residents did not attribute local natural hazards mostly to climate change. However, in the coastal zone, local natural hazards were indeed mostly attributed to climate change. This attribution to climate change was further correlated to a higher risk perception of natural hazards in the coastal zone but not in BVL.     Structure of Hierridin C, Synthesis of Hierridins B and C, and Evidence for Prevalent Alkylresorcinol Biosynthesis in Picocyanobacteria

    Small, single-celled planktonic cyanobacteria are ubiquitous in the world's oceans yet tend not to be perceived as secondary metabolite-rich organisms. Here we report the isolation and structure elucidation of hierridin C, a minor metabolite obtained from the cultured picocyanobacterium Cyanobium sp. LEGE 06113. We describe a simple, straightforward synthetic route to the scarcely produced hierridins that relies on a key regioselective halogenation step. In addition, we show that these compounds originate from a type III PKS pathway and that similar biosynthetic gene clusters are found in a variety of bacterial genomes, most notably those of the globally distributed picocyanobacteria genera Prochlorococcus, Cyanobium and Synechococcus.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Aedes fluviatilis cell lines as new tools to study metabolic and immune interactions in mosquito‑Wolbachia symbiosis

    In the present work, we established two novel embryonic cell lines from the mosquito Aedes fluviatilis containing or not the naturally occurring symbiont bacteria Wolbachia, which were called wAflu1 and Aflu2, respectively. We also obtained wAflu1 without Wolbachia after tetracycline treatment, named wAflu1.tet. Morphofunctional characterization was performed to help elucidate the symbiont-host interaction in the context of energy metabolism regulation and molecular mechanisms of the immune responses involved. The presence of Wolbachia pipientis improves energy performance in A. fluviatilis cells; it affects the regulation of key energy sources such as lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, making the distribution of actin more peripheral and with extensions that come into contact with neighboring cells. Additionally, innate immunity mechanisms were activated, showing that the wAflu1 and wAflu1.tet cells are responsive after the stimulus using Gram negative bacteria. Therefore, this work confirms the natural, mutually co-regulating symbiotic relationship between W. pipientis and A. fluviatilis, modulating the host metabolism and immune pathway activation. The results presented here add important resources to the current knowledge of Wolbachia-arthropod interactions

    Experimental benznidazole treatment of Trypanosoma cruzi II strains isolated from children of the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil, with Chagas disease.

    Trypanosoma cruzi strains from distinct geographic areas show differences in drug resistance and association between parasites genetic and treatment response has been observed. Considering that benznidazole (BZ) can reduce the parasite burden and tissues damage, even in not cured animals and individuals, the goal is to assess the drug response to BZ of T. cruzi II strains isolated from children of the Jequitinhonha Valley, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, before treatment. Mice infected and treated with BZ in both phases of infection were compared with the untreated and evaluated by fresh blood examination, haemoculture, polymerase chain reaction, conventional (ELISA) and non-conventional (FC-ALTA) serologies. In mice treated in the acute phase, a significant decrease in parasitaemia was observed for all strains. Positive parasitological and/or serological tests in animals treated during the acute and chronic (95.1-100%) phases showed that most of the strains were BZ resistant. However, beneficial effect was demonstrated because significant reduction (p < 0.05%) and/or suppression of parasitaemia was observed in mice infected with all strains (acute phase), associated to reduction/elimination of inflammation and fibrosis for two/eight strains. BZ offered some benefit, even in not cured animals, what suggest that BZ use may be recommended at least for recent chronic infection of the studied region
