    A study of an association between peripheral neuropathy and cognitive impairment in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients

    Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with many complications. Among the well-known complications are nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy. A complication which is rarely looked upon is cognitive impairment which is recently being highly associated with diabetes mellitus. There are a few recent publications which revealed that cognitive impairment and peripheral neuropathy could be brought about by a similar pathophysiology. A total of 279 diabetes mellitus patients were recruited from a diabetes clinic in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia from the 1st of July, 2018 until the 30th of September, 2019. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were recorded from the patients’ file. Cognitive impairment was assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) and peripheral neuropathy was assessed by Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI). The association between peripheral neuropathy and cognitive impairment was analysed using simple and multiple logistic regression method. A total of 279 patients were included in this study. The mean age of the patients was 62.38 (SD 8.53) years old. The mean duration of diabetes mellitus was 9.59 (SD 5.53) years. Majority of them were females, n=206 (73.8%). All of them were married and 97.5% were Malays. 183 patients (65.6%) had peripheral neuropathy while 196 patients (70.3%) experienced cognitive impairment. There was a significant association between peripheral neuropathy and cognitive impairment (p<0.001). Half of the patients with peripheral neuropathy had concomitantcognitive impairment (n=141, 50.5%). There was also a significant association of gender in which females conferred 74% lower odds to experience cognitive impairment compared to males (p<0.001). For patients with hyperlipidaemia, there were 2.07 times odds to experience cognitive impairment as compared to patients without hyperlipidaemia (p=0.046). For patients with retinopathy, there were 2.14 times odds to experience cognitive impairment as compared to patients without retinopathy (p=0.008). There was a significant association between the development of cognitive impairment among diabetes mellitus patients with a peripheral neuropathy. Female gender was associated with lower risk of cognitive impairment as compared to male. DM patients with dyslipidaemia and diabetic retinopathy have a higher risk of developing cognitive impairment

    Characterizing the initial conditions of heavy-ion collisions at the LHC with mean transverse momentum and anisotropic flow correlations

    Correlations between mean transverse momentum and anisotropic flow coefficients or are measured as a function of centrality in Pb–Pb and Xe–Xe collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 5.02 TeV and 5.44 TeV, respectively, with ALICE. In addition, the recently proposed higher-order correlation between [pt], v2, and v3 is measured for the first time, which shows an anticorrelation for the presented centrality ranges. These measurements are compared with hydrodynamic calculations using IP-Glasma and TRENTO initial-state shapes, the former based on the Color Glass Condensate effective theory with gluon saturation, and the latter a parameterized model with nucleons as the relevant degrees of freedom. The data are better described by the IP-Glasma rather than the TRENTO based calculations. In particular, Trajectum and JETSCAPE predictions, both based on the TRENTO initial state model but with different parameter settings, fail to describe the measurements. As the correlations between [pt] and vn are mainly driven by the correlations of the size and the shape of the system in the initial state, these new studies pave a novel way to characterize the initial state and help pin down the uncertainty of the extracted properties of the quark–gluon plasma recreated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

    Long- and short-range correlations and their event-scale dependence in high-multiplicity pp collisions at 1as = 13 TeV

    Two-particle angular correlations are measured in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The yields of particle pairs at short-( 06\u3b7 3c 0) and long-range (1.6 < | 06\u3b7| < 1.8) in pseudorapidity are extracted on the near-side ( 06\u3c6 3c 0). They are reported as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in the range 1 < pT< 4 GeV/c. Furthermore, the event-scale dependence is studied for the first time by requiring the presence of high-pT leading particles or jets for varying pT thresholds. The results demonstrate that the long-range \u201cridge\u201d yield, possibly related to the collective behavior of the system, is present in events with high-pT processes as well. The magnitudes of the short- and long-range yields are found to grow with the event scale. The results are compared to EPOS LHC and PYTHIA 8 calculations, with and without string-shoving interactions. It is found that while both models describe the qualitative trends in the data, calculations from EPOS LHC show a better quantitative agreement for the pT dependency, while overestimating the event-scale dependency.     General balance functions of identified charged hadron pairs of (pi,K,p) in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV

    First measurements of balance functions (BFs) of all combinations of identified charged hadron ( π , K, p) pairs in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV recorded by the ALICE detector are presented. The BF measurements are carried out as two-dimensional differential correlators versus the relative rapidity (delta-y) and azimuthal angle (delta-φ) of hadron pairs, and studied as a function of collision centrality. The delta-φ dependence of BFs is expected to be sensitive to the light quark diffusivity in the quark–gluon plasma. While the BF azimuthal widths of all pairs substantially decrease from peripheral to central collisions, the longitudinal widths exhibit mixed behaviors: BFs of π π and cross-species pairs narrow significantly in more central collisions, whereas those of KK and pp are found to be independent of collision centrality. This dichotomy is qualitatively consistent with the presence of strong radial flow effects and the existence of two stages of quark production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Finally, the first measurements of the collision centrality evolution of BF integrals are presented, with the observation that charge balancing fractions are nearly independent of collision centrality in Pb–Pb collisions. Overall, the results presented provide new and challenging constraints for theoretical models of hadron production and transport in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

    Measurement of beauty and charm production in pp collisions at √s = 5.02 TeV via non-prompt and prompt D mesons

    The pT-differential production cross sections of prompt and non-prompt (produced in beauty-hadron decays) D mesons were measured by the ALICE experiment at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) in proton-proton collisions at s√s = 5.02 TeV. The data sample used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of (19.3 ± 0.4) nb−1. D mesons were reconstructed from their decays D0 → K−π+, D+ → K−π+π+, and D+s→φπ+→K−K+π+Ds+→φπ+→K−K+π+ and their charge conjugates. Compared to previous measurements in the same rapidity region, the cross sections of prompt D+ and D+sDs+ mesons have an extended pT coverage and total uncertainties reduced by a factor ranging from 1.05 to 1.6, depending on pT, allowing for a more precise determination of their pT-integrated cross sections. The results are well described by perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of heavy quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons, fs/(fu + fd), is compatible for charm and beauty quarks and with previous measurements at different centre-of-mass energies and collision systems. The bb¯¯¯bb¯ production cross section per rapidity unit at midrapidity, estimated from non-prompt D-meson measurements, is dσbb¯¯¯/dy∣∣|y|<0.5=34.5±2.4(stat)+4.7−2.9(tot.syst)dσbb¯/dy||y|<0.5=34.5±2.4(stat)−2.9+4.7(tot.syst) μb. It is compatible with previous measurements at the same centre-of-mass energy and with the cross section pre- dicted by perturbative QCD calculations.publishedVersio

    Energy dependence of ϕ meson production at forward rapidity in pp collisions at the LHC

    The production of ϕ\phi mesons has been studied in pp collisions at LHC energies with the ALICE detector via the dimuon decay channel in the rapidity region 2.5<y<42.5< y < 4. Measurements of the differential cross section d2σ/dydpT\mathrm{d}^2\sigma /\mathrm{d}y \mathrm{d}p_{\mathrm {T}} are presented as a function of the transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm {T}}) at the center-of-mass energies s=5.02\sqrt{s}=5.02, 8 and 13 TeV and compared with the ALICE results at midrapidity. The differential cross sections at s=5.02\sqrt{s}=5.02 and 13 TeV are also studied in several rapidity intervals as a function of pTp_{\mathrm {T}}, and as a function of rapidity in three pTp_{\mathrm {T}} intervals. A hardening of the pTp_{\mathrm {T}}-differential cross section with the collision energy is observed, while, for a given energy, pTp_{\mathrm {T}} spectra soften with increasing rapidity and, conversely, rapidity distributions get slightly narrower at increasing pTp_{\mathrm {T}}. The new results, complementing the published measurements at s=2.76\sqrt{s}=2.76 and 7 TeV, allow one to establish the energy dependence of ϕ\phi meson production and to compare the measured cross sections with phenomenological models. None of the considered models manages to describe the evolution of the cross section with pTp_{\mathrm {T}} and rapidity at all the energies.publishedVersio

    Measurement of the production of (anti)nuclei in p–Pb collisions at sNN=8.16TeV

    Measurements of (anti)proton, (anti)deuteron, and (anti)3He production in the rapidity range -1 > y > 0 as a function of the transverse momentum and event multiplicity in p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair sqrt(sNN) = 8.16 TeV are presented. The coalescence parameters B2 and B3, measured as a function of the transverse momentum per nucleon and of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density, confirm a smooth evolution from low to high multiplicity across different collision systems and energies. The ratios between (anti)deuteron and (anti)3He yields and those of (anti)protons are also reported as a function of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density. A comparison with the predictions of the statistical hadronization and coalescence models for different collision systems and center-of-mass energies favors the coalescence description for the deuteron-to-proton yield ratio with respect to the canonical statistical model

    Forward rapidity J/ψ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at s \sqrt{s} = 5.02 and 13 TeV

    The production of J/ψ is measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity at forward rapidity in proton-proton (pp) collisions at center-of-mass energies √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed via their decay into dimuons in the rapidity interval (2.5 < y < 4.0), whereas the charged-particle multiplicity density (dNch/dη) is measured at midrapidity (|η| < 1). The production rate as a function of multiplicity is reported as the ratio of the yield in a given multiplicity interval to the multiplicity-integrated one. This observable shows a linear increase with charged-particle multiplicity normalized to the corresponding average value for inelastic events (dNch/dη/〈dNch/dη〉), at both the colliding energies. Measurements are compared with available ALICE results at midrapidity and theoretical model calculations. First measurement of the mean transverse momentum (〈pT〉) of J/ψ in pp collisions exhibits an increasing trend as a function of dNch/dη/〈dNch/dη〉 showing a saturation towards high charged-particle multiplicities

    Neutral to charged kaon yield fluctuations in Pb – Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV

    We present the first measurement of event-by-event fluctuations in the kaon sector in Pb – Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The robust fluctuation correlator νdyn is used to evaluate the magnitude of fluctuations of the relative yields of neutral and charged kaons, as well as the relative yields of charged kaons, as a function of collision centrality and selected kinematic ranges. While the correlator νdyn[K+, K− ] exhibits a scaling approximately in inverse proportion of the charged particle multiplicity, νdyn[K0 S , K± ] features a significant deviation from such scaling. Within uncertainties, the value of νdyn[K0S , K± ] is independent of the selected transverse momentum interval, while it exhibits a pseudorapidity dependence. The results are compared with HIJING, AMPT and EPOS–LHC predictions, and are further discussed in the context of the possible production of disoriented chiral condensates in central Pb – Pb collisions
