BIKE: Bilingual Keyphrase Experiments
This paper presents a novel strategy for translating lists
of keyphrases. Typical keyphrase lists appear in
scientific articles, information retrieval systems and
web page meta-data. Our system combines a statistical
translation model trained on a bilingual corpus of
scientific papers with sense-focused look-up in a large
bilingual terminological resource. For the latter,
we developed a novel technique that benefits from viewing
the keyphrase list as contextual help for sense
disambiguation. The optimal combination of modules was
discovered by a genetic algorithm. Our work applies to
Using COTS Search Engines and Custom Query Strategies at CLEF
This paper presents a system for bilingual information retrieval using commercial off-the-shelf search engines (COTS). Several custom query construction, expansion and translation strategies are compared. We present the experiments and the corresponding results for the CLEF 2004 event
Linking high school students' achievement goal orientations with their competence beliefs and their perception of teachers' emotional support during the COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract : Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescents have experienced limitations in their
everyday activities. Consequently, their mental health has become an area of concern.
However, there has been much less of a focus on the factors and mechanisms
contributing to how they have approached their various academic activities during
the pandemic. The current study fills this gap by investigating associations between
adolescentsâ competence beliefs and perception of teachersâ emotional support and
their achievement goals (mastery, performance, and work avoidance) at the onset of
the second wave of this pandemic in Canada. Participants were 90 Canadian high
school adolescents in grades 9 and 10 and they were surveyed in November of 2020.
Data were analyzed using multiple regression and mediation analyses. Among the most
salient results, competence beliefs were found to predict achievement goals, above and
beyond teachersâ emotional support, and these beliefs were significantly and positively
associated with mastery and performance orientation, and marginally and negatively
associated with work avoidance orientation. Results also showed that competence
beliefs mediated the association between teachersâ emotional support and the mastery
goal orientation. These findings are discussed in light of relevant pre-pandemic evidence
about the role of competence beliefs and teachersâ emotional support on achievement
goal orientations

Altitude and life-history shape the evolution of Heliconius wings.
Phenotypic divergence between closely related species has long interested biologists. Taxa that inhabit a range of environments and have diverse natural histories can help understand how selection drives phenotypic divergence. In butterflies, wing color patterns have been extensively studied but diversity in wing shape and size is less well understood. Here, we assess the relative importance of phylogenetic relatedness, natural history, and habitat on shaping wing morphology in a large dataset of over 3500 individuals, representing 13 Heliconius species from across the Neotropics. We find that both larval and adult behavioral ecology correlate with patterns of wing sexual dimorphism and adult size. Species with solitary larvae have larger adult males, in contrast to gregarious Heliconius species, and indeed most Lepidoptera, where females are larger. Species in the pupal-mating clade are smaller than those in the adult-mating clade. Interestingly, we find that high-altitude species tend to have rounder wings and, in one of the two major Heliconius clades, are also bigger than their lowland relatives. Furthermore, within two widespread species, we find that high-altitude populations also have rounder wings. Thus, we reveal novel adaptive wing morphological divergence among Heliconius species beyond that imposed by natural selection on aposematic wing coloration
This study examines teachersâ perceptions of gifted students in their class, in a Quebec school service centre, and the influence of personal and contextual variables. The sample consists of 21 primary school teachers (18 women and 3 men). After the lexical analysis carried out with the Alceste software, four specific classes of statements emerge from the teachersâ discourse. In addition, age, teaching cycle, type of class, number of years of experience, involvement in an intervention plan and experience with giftedness predict the heterogeneity of the perceptions of teachers towards giftedness. The results suggest more traditional and stereotypical perceptions of giftedness by teachers.
