Multispecies Design
The devastating effects that unsustainable design practices have on the natural world and other species with whom we share this planet have gained widespread awareness and are the driving force behind attempts to develop more sustainable design approaches. These efforts tend to focus on minimising the negative effects that design has on the natural world by reduced material and energy usage. However, the possibility that design may have an active role in mitigating the erosion of biodiversity has only entered the discussion in recent years and remains a marginal activity for design.
Following an ongoing paradigm shift calling for the inclusion of a greater diversity of wild animals within human-dominated habitats (as a way of addressing both the erosion of biodiversity and humankindâs alienation from nature), this research proposes that there is a growing need for a design practice capable of responding to the needs of wild animals, while addressing questions of human-animal interaction.
In this thesis, Multispecies Design is proposed and developed as a theoretical framework for supporting the shift to more biodiverse human habitats. The research addresses both the physical and socio-cultural requirements of such a shift. Three distinct views define this emerging design approach: recognising animals as clients of design, recognising human-animal interactions as designed experiences and the view of manmade systems as further extensions of ecological systems.
The methodological implications of Multispecies Design have been explored in a case study design project concerned with the ecological enhancement of a coastal outfall pipe on a highly frequented beach in Cornwall, UK. The case study explored ways of designing to address the needs of both people and of wild animal species, as well as the interactions between the two groups. It focused on identifying and developing design approaches and tools for studying and representing wild animals in design projects to facilitate their integration into built environments. These tools were further refined in a series of workshops with design and art students carried out during the PhD research.
The insights from the practical work, together with the theoretical framework developed alongside them, have led to the development of Principles of Multispecies Design and practical and conceptual Tools for Multispecies Design
Impact of public release of performance data on the behaviour of healthcare consumers and providers.
BACKGROUND: It is becoming increasingly common to publish information about the quality and performance of healthcare organisations and individual professionals. However, we do not know how this information is used, or the extent to which such reporting leads to quality improvement by changing the behaviour of healthcare consumers, providers, and purchasers.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the effects of public release of performance data, from any source, on changing the healthcare utilisation behaviour of healthcare consumers, providers (professionals and organisations), and purchasers of care. In addition, we sought to estimate the effects on healthcare provider performance, patient outcomes, and staff morale.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and two trials registers on 26 June 2017. We checked reference lists of all included studies to identify additional studies.
SELECTION CRITERIA: We searched for randomised or non-randomised trials, interrupted time series, and controlled before-after studies of the effects of publicly releasing data regarding any aspect of the performance of healthcare organisations or professionals. Each study had to report at least one main outcome related to selecting or changing care.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently screened studies for eligibility and extracted data. For each study, we extracted data about the target groups (healthcare consumers, healthcare providers, and healthcare purchasers), performance data, main outcomes (choice of healthcare provider, and improvement by means of changes in care), and other outcomes (awareness, attitude, knowledge of performance data, and costs). Given the substantial degree of clinical and methodological heterogeneity between the studies, we presented the findings for each policy in a structured format, but did not undertake a meta-analysis.
MAIN RESULTS: We included 12 studies that analysed data from more than 7570 providers (e.g. professionals and organisations), and a further 3,333,386 clinical encounters (e.g. patient referrals, prescriptions). We included four cluster-randomised trials, one cluster-non-randomised trial, six interrupted time series studies, and one controlled before-after study. Eight studies were undertaken in the USA, and one each in Canada, Korea, China, and The Netherlands. Four studies examined the effect of public release of performance data on consumer healthcare choices, and four on improving quality.There was low-certainty evidence that public release of performance data may make little or no difference to long-term healthcare utilisation by healthcare consumers (3 studies; 18,294 insurance plan beneficiaries), or providers (4 studies; 3,000,000 births, and 67 healthcare providers), or to provider performance (1 study; 82 providers). However, there was also low-certainty evidence to suggest that public release of performance data may slightly improve some patient outcomes (5 studies, 315,092 hospitalisations, and 7502 providers). There was low-certainty evidence from a single study to suggest that public release of performance data may have differential effects on disadvantaged populations. There was no evidence about effects on healthcare utilisation decisions by purchasers, or adverse effects.
AUTHORS\u27 CONCLUSIONS: The existing evidence base is inadequate to directly inform policy and practice. Further studies should consider whether public release of performance data can improve patient outcomes, as well as healthcare processes
Strichartz estimates on Schwarzschild black hole backgrounds
We study dispersive properties for the wave equation in the Schwarzschild
space-time. The first result we obtain is a local energy estimate. This is then
used, following the spirit of earlier work of Metcalfe-Tataru, in order to
establish global-in-time Strichartz estimates. A considerable part of the paper
is devoted to a precise analysis of solutions near the trapping region, namely

Supervoid Origin of the Cold Spot in the Cosmic Microwave Background
We use a WISE-2MASS-Pan-STARRS1 galaxy catalog to search for a supervoid in
the direction of the Cosmic Microwave Background Cold Spot. We obtain
photometric redshifts using our multicolor data set to create a tomographic map
of the galaxy distribution. The radial density profile centred on the Cold Spot
shows a large low density region, extending over 10's of degrees. Motivated by
previous Cosmic Microwave Background results, we test for underdensities within
two angular radii, , and . Our data, combined with an
earlier measurement by Granett et al 2010, are consistent with a large supervoid with centered at . Such a supervoid, constituting a
fluctuation in the model, is a plausible cause

What doesnât kill me ... : adversity-related experiences are vital in the development of superior Olympic performance
Objectives: Recent research suggests that experiencing some adversity can have beneficial outcomes for human growth and development. The purpose of this paper was to explore the adversities that the worldâs best athletes encounter and the perceived role that these experiences play in their psychological and performance development.
Design: A qualitative design was employed because detailed information of rich quality was required to better understand adversity-related experiences in the worldâs best athletes.
Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 Olympic gold medalists from a variety of sports. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the data.
Results: The findings indicate that the participants encountered a range of sport- and non-sport adversities that they considered were essential for winning their gold medals, including repeated non-selection, significant sporting failure, serious injury, political unrest, and the death of a family member. The participants described the role that these experiences played in their psychological and performance development, specifically focusing on their resultant trauma, motivation, and learning.
Conclusions: Adversity-related experiences were deemed to be vital in the psychological and performance development of Olympic champions. In the future, researchers should conduct more in-depth comparative studies of Olympic athletesĂąâŹâą adversity- and growth-related experiences, and draw on existing and alternative theoretical explanations of the growth-performance relationship. For professional practitioners, adversity-related experiences offer potential developmental opportunities if they are carefully and purposely harnessed
Physiology, behavior, and conservation
Many animal populations are in decline as a result of human activity. Conservation practitioners are attempting to prevent further declines and loss of biodiversity as well as to facilitate recovery of endangered species, and they often rely on interdisciplinary approaches to generate conservation solutions. Two recent interfaces in conservation science involve animal behavior (i.e., conservation behavior) and physiology (i.e., conservation physiology). To date, these interfaces have been considered separate entities, but from both pragmatic and biological perspectives, there is merit in better integrating behavior and physiology to address applied conservation problems and to inform resource management. Although there are some institutional, conceptual, methodological, and communication-oriented challenges to integrating behavior and physiology to inform conservation actions, most of these barriers can be overcome. Through outlining several successful examples that integrate these disciplines, we conclude that physiology and behavior can together generate meaningful data to support animal conservation and management actions. Tangentially, applied conservation and management problems can, in turn, also help advance and reinvigorate the fundamental disciplines of animal physiology and behavior by providing advanced natural experiments that challenge traditional frameworks
Kepler-93b: A Terrestrial World Measured to within 120 km, and a Test Case for a New Spitzer Observing Mode
We present the characterization of the Kepler-93 exoplanetary system, based
on three years of photometry gathered by the Kepler spacecraft. The duration
and cadence of the Kepler observations, in tandem with the brightness of the
star, enable unusually precise constraints on both the planet and its host. We
conduct an asteroseismic analysis of the Kepler photometry and conclude that
the star has an average density of 1.652+/-0.006 g/cm^3. Its mass of
0.911+/-0.033 M_Sun renders it one of the lowest-mass subjects of asteroseismic
study. An analysis of the transit signature produced by the planet Kepler-93b,
which appears with a period of 4.72673978+/-9.7x10^-7 days, returns a
consistent but less precise measurement of the stellar density, 1.72+0.02-0.28
g/cm^3. The agreement of these two values lends credence to the planetary
interpretation of the transit signal. The achromatic transit depth, as compared
between Kepler and the Spitzer Space Telescope, supports the same conclusion.
We observed seven transits of Kepler-93b with Spitzer, three of which we
conducted in a new observing mode. The pointing strategy we employed to gather
this subset of observations halved our uncertainty on the transit radius ratio
R_p/R_star. We find, after folding together the stellar radius measurement of
0.919+/-0.011 R_Sun with the transit depth, a best-fit value for the planetary
radius of 1.481+/-0.019 R_Earth. The uncertainty of 120 km on our measurement
of the planet's size currently renders it one of the most precisely measured
planetary radii outside of the Solar System. Together with the radius, the
planetary mass of 3.8+/-1.5 M_Earth corresponds to a rocky density of 6.3+/-2.6
g/cm^3. After applying a prior on the plausible maximum densities of
similarly-sized worlds between 1--1.5 R_Earth, we find that Kepler-93b

Single-shot qubit readout in circuit Quantum Electrodynamics
The future development of quantum information using superconducting circuits
requires Josephson qubits [1] with long coherence times combined to a
high-fidelity readout. Major progress in the control of coherence has recently
been achieved using circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) architectures [2,
3], where the qubit is embedded in a coplanar waveguide resonator (CPWR) which
both provides a well controlled electromagnetic environment and serves as qubit
readout. In particular a new qubit design, the transmon, yields reproducibly
long coherence times [4, 5]. However, a high-fidelity single-shot readout of
the transmon, highly desirable for running simple quantum algorithms or measur-
ing quantum correlations in multi-qubit experiments, is still lacking. In this
work, we demonstrate a new transmon circuit where the CPWR is turned into a
sample-and-hold detector, namely a Josephson Bifurcation Amplifer (JBA) [6, 7],
which allows both fast measurement and single-shot discrimination of the qubit
states. We report Rabi oscillations with a high visibility of 94% together with
dephasing and relaxation times longer than 0:5 \mu\s. By performing two
subsequent measurements, we also demonstrate that this new readout does not

Kepler-68: Three Planets, One With a Density Between That of Earth and Ice Giants
NASA's Kepler Mission has revealed two transiting planets orbiting Kepler-68.
Follow-up Doppler measurements have established the mass of the innermost
planet and revealed a third jovian-mass planet orbiting beyond the two
transiting planets. Kepler-68b, in a 5.4 day orbit has mass 8.3 +/- 2.3 Earth,
radius 2.31 +/- 0.07 Earth radii, and a density of 3.32 +/- 0.92 (cgs), giving
Kepler-68b a density intermediate between that of the ice giants and Earth.
Kepler-68c is Earth-sized with a radius of 0.953 Earth and transits on a 9.6
day orbit; validation of Kepler-68c posed unique challenges. Kepler-68d has an
orbital period of 580 +/- 15 days and minimum mass of Msin(i) = 0.947 Jupiter.
Power spectra of the Kepler photometry at 1-minute cadence exhibit a rich and
strong set of asteroseismic pulsation modes enabling detailed analysis of the
stellar interior. Spectroscopy of the star coupled with asteroseismic modeling
of the multiple pulsation modes yield precise measurements of stellar
properties, notably Teff = 5793 +/- 74 K, M = 1.079 +/- 0.051 Msun, R = 1.243
+/- 0.019 Rsun, and density 0.7903 +/- 0.0054 (cgs), all measured with
fractional uncertainties of only a few percent. Models of Kepler-68b suggest it
is likely composed of rock and water, or has a H and He envelope to yield its
