Possible Role of Tetracyclines on COVID-19: Recycling Well-Known Old Drugs from the Shelf
We are in the midst of a pandemic due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Innovative therapies are in the lookup around the world. Recently, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in addition to Azithromycin were proposed to be used in patients with severe disease even though strong evidence is lacking. We propose the use of tetracyclines in addition to anti-virals early in the curse of the disease in order to prevent the Cytokine Storm Syndrome associated with COVID-19 and prevent ARDS. The proposed mechanisms of tetracyclines are: 1) anti-apoptotic properties; 2) decrease the Myeloperoxidase and ROS releaser from immune cells; 3) decrease neutrophil and monocyte migration and chemotaxis; 4) decrease the secretion of pro-inflammatory and vasoactive cytokines from macrophages (IL-1 beta, IL-8, and TNF-alpha); 5) inhibition of iNOS expression; 6) inhibition of chemotaxis of peripheral monocytes; 7) inhibition of IL-6 production and its receptor system; 8) prevention of fibrosis; and 9) inhibition of metalloproteinases (particularly MMP-2 and 9). Tetracyclines are well-known drugs with lower costs, and are not associated with adverse effects like QT prolongation. Clinical trials are needed to test our hypothesis
Introduction: Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a malignant tumor with a high risk of developing recurrence and metastasis, surgical resection with wide margins is the main treatment, limb preservation and reconstruction is in high demand for surgeons. Case of report: We present the case of a 67-year-old woman with a recurrence of a knee tumor that had been operated on two year earlier. Oncological resection of the tumor was performed with reconstruction of the knee joint with an Endo Model prosthesis and extensor mechanism reconstruction with a synthetic polypropylene mesh graft plus a semitendinosus and gracilis autograft. The patella was reconstructed with posterior femoral condyle autograft. At 16 months of patient follow-up, she is free of disease, with a score of 27 on the lower limb scale of the MSTS (Musculoskeletal Tumor Society). Conclusion: The combination of synthetic graft with hamstring autograft can reduce the failure rate of extensor mechanism reconstruction due to oncological resections.

Functional Enrichment Analysis of Regulatory Elements
This work has been partially supported by FEDER/Junta de Andalucia-Consejeria de Economia y Conocimiento/(grant CV20-36723), grant PID2020-119032RB-I00, MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and FEDER/Junta de Andalucia-Consejeria de Transformacion Economica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades (Grant P20_00335).Statistical methods for enrichment analysis are important tools to extract biological information
from omics experiments. Although these methods have been widely used for the analysis
of gene and protein lists, the development of high-throughput technologies for regulatory elements
demands dedicated statistical and bioinformatics tools. Here, we present a set of enrichment analysis
methods for regulatory elements, including CpG sites, miRNAs, and transcription factors. Statistical
significance is determined via a power weighting function for target genes and tested by theWallenius
noncentral hypergeometric distribution model to avoid selection bias. These new methodologies have
been applied to the analysis of a set of miRNAs associated with arrhythmia, showing the potential of
this tool to extract biological information from a list of regulatory elements. These new methods are
available in GeneCodis 4, a web tool able to perform singular and modular enrichment analysis that
allows the integration of heterogeneous information.FEDER/Junta de Andalucia-Consejeria de Economia y Conocimiento CV20-36723MCIN/AEI PID2020-119032RB-I00FEDER/Junta de Andalucia-Consejeria de Transformacion Economica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades P20_0033
The new Physical Education curriculum in Ecuador
The objective of the present study, was to analyze the new physical education curriculum in Ecuador, which has been implemented by the Undersecretary of Educational Foundations of the Ministry, arguing that the changes are adapted to a ten-year plan on inclusion and attention to diversity; and that it also contains a proposal for face-to-face and online training that provides a flexibility methodology so that, the teacher adapts to the needs of the students. For this reason, a readjustment has been made that simplifies the organization contemplated in the presentation of an annual planning to a curriculum by sub-level that covers three years of study. The simplification will be implemented in basic education where there are four sublevels: preparatory, elementary, middle and higher; where for each sublevel an analytical plan is contemplated with its respective mandatory and optional objectives; while the same also happens at the baccalaureate level with a duration of three years. The analysis contemplated the impact of the reform, the subject, the teacher and the students, concluding that any change represents new challenges identifying new problems and strengths that must be influenced through educational alternatives framed in strategies and techniques including students who have difficulties in learnin
Simulating the detection of the global 21 cm signal with MIST for different models of the soil and beam directivity
The Mapper of the IGM Spin Temperature (MIST) is a new ground-based,
single-antenna, radio experiment attempting to detect the global 21 cm signal
from the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn. A significant challenge in this measurement
is the frequency-dependence, or chromaticity, of the antenna beam directivity.
MIST observes with the antenna above the soil and without a metal ground plane,
and the beam directivity is sensitive to the electrical characteristics of the
soil. In this paper, we use simulated observations with MIST to study how the
detection of the global 21 cm signal from Cosmic Dawn is affected by the soil
and the MIST beam directivity. We simulate observations using electromagnetic
models of the directivity computed for single- and two-layer models of the
soil. We test the recovery of the Cosmic Dawn signal with and without beam
chromaticity correction applied to the simulated data. We find that our
single-layer soil models enable a straightforward recovery of the signal even
without chromaticity correction. Two-layer models increase the beam
chromaticity and make the recovery more challenging. However, for the model in
which the bottom soil layer has a lower electrical conductivity than the top
layer, the signal can be recovered even without chromaticity correction. For
the other two-layer models, chromaticity correction is necessary for the
recovery of the signal and the accuracy requirements for the soil parameters
vary between models. These results will be used as a guideline to select
observation sites that are favorable for the detection of the Cosmic Dawn
signal.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Teaching Energy Efficiency: A Cross-Border Public Class and Lesson Study in STEM
As part of an APEC educational project on the cross-cutting concept of energy, researchers and teachers from 6 countries spent 8 months designing, testing and implementing a pilot STEM public class with two schools from Chile and one from the US. One of the researchers taught a lesson from a school in Chile, with a live transmission to the other two schools via Skype. At the same time, the lesson was also broadcasted via video streaming. In addition to live questions and answers, students used individual devices to answer four open-ended questions that were commented on by the researcher as he received them. The experience demonstrated that Cross-Border Public Classes boost student engagement and represent a promising strategy for introducing a key 21st century skill: synchronous learning involving multiple teams across the world. It also revealed how Lesson Study and Public Classes integrated with ICT network technology can form a powerful learning ecosystem for regional development and social innovation
