    In situ transformation and cleaning of tin-drop contamination on mirrors for extreme ultraviolet light

    Tin-drop contamination was cleaned from multilayer-coated mirrors by induction of phase transformation. The {\beta} - {\alpha} phase transition of tin was induced to initiate material embrittlement and enable facile removal of thick tin deposits. The necessary steps were performed under high-vacuum conditions for an in-situ demonstration of the removal of severe tin contamination from optics used for reflection of extreme ultraviolet light. Molten tin of high purity was dripped onto mirror samples, inoculated with small seed particles of gray tin and then cooled to temperatures in the range of -25 {\deg}C to -40 {\deg}C. As recorded by photographic imaging, the drops were converted in an evacuated chamber to gray tin by induction of tin pest leading to their disintegration within a few hours. They could then be easily cleaned or fell off from the surface without causing any damage of the multilayer coating. Cleaning of tin contamination from the mirrors with almost complete structural transformation of the tin drops and subsequent removal by puffs of dry gas could be achieved within a day. The fraction of area coverage of untransformed tin remaining on the samples after cleaning was evaluated from the images and generally found to be well below 1%. After tin dripping, phase transition and cleaning, analysis of the reflectance of a Mo/Si-coated mirror with measurements at wavelengths of 13.6 nm and 13.5 nm showed a reduction by only 0.5%, with an upper limit of 1%

    Adding insult to injury:Illegitimate stressors and their association with situational well-being, social self-esteem, and desire for revenge

    Implying an offense to self, appraising a stressor as indicating a lack of consideration by others should have effects beyond its stressfulness per se. In Stress-as-Offense-to-Self theory (SOS), such stressors are called “illegitimate stressors.” We assessed situations appraised as stressful in two diary studies (N 1 = 117, N 2 = 137). Outcome variables were feelings of resentment in both studies, plus nervousness, anxiety, and sadness in Study 1 and depressive mood, threat to social self-esteem, and desire for revenge in Study 2. Controlling for stressfulness, perceived illegitimacy predicted affective reactions that are outward-directed (feelings of resentment [Studies 1 and 2], threat to social self-esteem and desire for revenge [Study 2]); it also predicted sadness in Study 1 but not depressive mood in Study 2, nor nervousness (Study 1). Thus, not all hypotheses were confirmed but the pattern was as expected, in that results were consistent regarding outcomes typically associated with the attribution of blame. The independent contribution of perceived illegitimacy aligns well with the underlying Stress-as-Offense-to-Self theory. Practical implications refer to efforts to avoid illegitimate stressors, for instance by perspective-taking, by showing appreciation and support, and by supporting such behaviours through keeping stressors in general at a manageable level

    More than seven decades of Acta Tropica: partnership to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

    The inaugural issue of Acta Tropica has been published in 1944, at a time of utmost international isolation and uncertainty due to World War II. Now, more than seven decades later, Acta Tropica is a trusted outlet to communicate and disseminate scientific advances in the fields of parasitology and tropical medicine. As a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal, Acta Tropica contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, that is "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all of all ages". This article explores how Acta Tropica has evolved over time. Our analysis is based on a systematic review of keywords derived from all issues published in a specific year, arbitrarily selected at decadal snapshots (1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020). Results indicate a decrease in interdisciplinarity in favour of more specialised expertise in various fields of infectious diseases research and public health with a particular emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. Yet, by examining first and last authors' institutional affiliations and classifying countries by the Human Development Index (HDI), we find that most authors are affiliated with institutions in high- and very high-HDI countries. Over time, the mean number of authors on a paper has increased severalfold (from 1.35 in 1950 to 7.51 in 2020). Taken together, Acta Tropica has become increasingly globally anchored and contributes not only to SDG 3, but increasingly also to SDG 17, that is "Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development"

    SerpinA12 (vaspin) is thought to be mainly expressed in adipose tissue and has multiple beneficial effects on metabolic, inflammatory and atherogenic processes related to obesity. KLK7 (kallikrein 7) is the only known protease target of vaspin to date and is inhibited with a moderate inhibition rate. In the crystal structure, the cleavage site (P1-P1′) of the vaspin reactive centre loop is fairly rigid compared with the flexible residues before P2, possibly supported by an ionic interaction of P1′ glutamate (Glu379) with an arginine residue (Arg302) of the β-sheet C. A P1′ glutamate seems highly unusual and unfavourable for the protease KLK7. We characterized vaspin mutants to investigate the roles of these two residues in protease inhibition and recognition by vaspin. Reactive centre loop mutations changing the P1′ residue or altering the reactive centre loop conformation significantly increased inhibition parameters, whereas removal of the positive charge within β-sheet C impeded the serpin–protease interaction. Arg302 is a crucial contact to enable vaspin recognition by KLK7 and it supports moderate inhibition of the serpin despite the presence of the detrimental P1′ Glu379, which clearly represents a major limiting factor for vaspin-inhibitory activity. We also show that the vaspin-inhibition rate for KLK7 can be modestly increased by heparin and demonstrate that vaspin is a heparin-binding serpin. Noteworthily, we observed vaspin as a remarkably thermostable serpin and found that Glu379 and Arg302 influence heat-induced polymerization. These structural and functional results reveal the mechanistic basis of how reactive centre loop sequence and exosite interaction in vaspin enable KLK7 recognition and regulate protease inhibition as well as stability of this adipose tissue-derived serpin

    Tubular gelatinase A (MMP-2) and its tissue inhibitors in polycystic kidney disease in the Han:SPRD rat. Thickening of the tubular basement membrane is one of the hallmarks of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). The present study was conducted to investigate the potential role of the matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and its specific tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in the accumulation of matrix components in PKD. As a model of PKD, two-month-old heterozygous Han:SPRD rats, which are at an early stage of cystogenesis, were used. MMP-2, but not MMP-9 (gelatinase B) nor MMP-3 (stromelysin) could be detected in proximal tubules of the normal rat kidney. The presence of the inhibitors TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 was confirmed on the mRNA level. In tubules from PKD rats MMP-2 activity was lower (31 ± 8 vs. 58 ± 7 U/prep., N = 9, P < 0.05), mRNA of MMP-2 was reduced 4.2 ± 0.6-fold (N = 4, P < 0.05) and enzyme protein was depressed 3.8 ± 0.8-fold (N = 4, P < 0.05). By contrast, TIMP-1 mRNA was 9.0 ± 1.1-fold and TIMP-2 mRNA 3.8 ± 0.7-fold (N = 4, P < 0.05) elevated over controls. Cyst fluid from homozygous rats contained MMP-2 protein and activity. These findings indicate that tubular MMP-2 activity is reduced in PKD, due to down-regulation of MMP-2, up-regulation of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2, and luminal secretion of the enzyme. It is conceivable that these alterations relate to the enhanced matrix accumulation observed in the evolution of PKD

    Im Anschluß an die Darstellung der Merkmale computerunterstützten Interviewens werden Funktionen des interaktiven Befragungs- und Instruktionssystem (IBIS), ein Softwaresystem, das mit einer hochfunktionalen Anweisungssprache eine Benutzeroberfläche für die Entwicklung von Befragungs- und Lehrprogrammen bietet, beschrieben. Der Untersuchungsablauf wird durch zahlreiche Anweisungen und deren Spezifikationen gesteuert, die in einer Steuerdatei mit einem Editor zusammengestellt werden. Der modulare Funktionsaufbau gestattet die Steuerung verschiedener peripherer Hardwaresysteme. Das System erlaubt dem Anwender eine Variationsvielfalt in der Gestaltung seiner Problemlösungen. Am Beispiel einer praktischen Anwendung mit Experimenten aus dem ZUMA-Forschungsschwerpunkt 'Kognition und Umfrageforschung' werden Erfahrungen bei der Durchführung, der Datenaufbereitung und der Datenanalyse berichtet. Abschließend werden zukünftige Entwicklungstendenzen bei interaktiven Selbstbefragungssystemen diskutiert. (HN2

    A randomized controlled trial

    Objective We report on the effect of hemoadsorption therapy to reduce cytokines in septic patients with respiratory failure. Methods This was a randomized, controlled, open-label, multicenter trial. Mechanically ventilated patients with severe sepsis or septic shock and acute lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome were eligible for study inclusion. Patients were randomly assigned to either therapy with CytoSorb hemoperfusion for 6 hours per day for up to 7 consecutive days (treatment), or no hemoperfusion (control). Primary outcome was change in normalized IL-6-serum concentrations during study day 1 and 7. Results 97 of the 100 randomized patients were analyzed. We were not able to detect differences in systemic plasma IL-6 levels between the two groups (n = 75; p = 0.15). Significant IL-6 elimination, averaging between 5 and 18% per blood pass throughout the entire treatment period was recorded. In the unadjusted analysis, 60-day-mortality was significantly higher in the treatment group (44.7%) compared to the control group (26.0%; p = 0.039). The proportion of patients receiving renal replacement therapy at the time of enrollment was higher in the treatment group (31.9%) when compared to the control group (16.3%). After adjustment for patient morbidity and baseline imbalances, no association of hemoperfusion with mortality was found (p = 0.19). Conclusions In this patient population with predominantly septic shock and multiple organ failure, hemoadsorption removed IL-6 but this did not lead to lower plasma IL-6-levels. We did not detect statistically significant differences in the secondary outcomes multiple organ dysfunction score, ventilation time and time course of oxygenation

    Characteristics of Nephroblastoma/Nephroblastomatosis in Children with a Clinically Reported Underlying Malformation or Cancer Predisposition Syndrome

    (1) Background: about 10% of Wilms Tumor (WT) patients have a malformation or cancer predisposition syndrome (CPS) with causative germline genetic or epigenetic variants. Knowledge on CPS is essential for genetic counselling. (2) Methods: this retrospective analysis focused on 2927 consecutive patients with WTs registered between 1989 and 2017 in the SIOP/GPOH studies. (3) Results: Genitourinary malformations (GU, N = 66, 2.3%), Beckwith-Wiedemann spectrum (BWS, N = 32, 1.1%), isolated hemihypertrophy (IHH, N = 29, 1.0%), Denys-Drash syndrome (DDS, N = 24, 0.8%) and WAGR syndrome (N = 20, 0.7%) were reported most frequently. Compared to others, these patients were younger at WT diagnosis (median age 24.5 months vs. 39.0 months), had smaller tumors (349.4 mL vs. 487.5 mL), less often metastasis (8.2% vs. 18%), but more often nephroblastomatosis (12.9% vs. 1.9%). WT with IHH was associated with blastemal WT and DDS with stromal subtype. Bilateral WTs were common in WAGR (30%), DDS (29%) and BWS (31%). Chemotherapy induced reduction in tumor volume was poor in DDS (0.4% increase) and favorable in BWS (86.9% reduction). The event-free survival (EFS) of patients with BWS was significantly (p = 0.002) worse than in others. (4) Conclusions: CPS should be considered in WTs with specific clinical features resulting in referral to a geneticist. Their outcome was not always favorable
