Sap flow response to olive water stress: a comparative study with trunk diameter variations and leaf turgor pressure
11 pages, 3 figures, 19 references.-- VIII International Symposium on Sap Flow, celebrado del 8-12 de mayo 2011, en Volterra, Italia.The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of used sap flow (SF), trunk diameter variation (TDV) and leaf turgor (LT) sensors for assessing water stress in a `Arbequina¿ hedgerow olive orchard with 1667 trees ha-1. Measurements were made in control trees irrigated to replace 100% of the crop water needs, and in trees under two regulated deficit irrigation strategies, 60RDI and 30RDI, in which irrigation replaced ca. 60% and 30% of the control, respectively. From the SF and TDV measurements we calculated the daily difference, both for tree water consumption (DEp) and maximum trunk diameter (DMXTD), between RDI trees and control trees. With the LT sensors we recorded the leaf patch output pressure (Pp), which is related to the leaf turgor pressure. Both DEp and DMXTD responded quickly and markedly to changes in water stress. The seasonal dynamics of both indices agreed with that of the stem water potential. A decrease in the reliability of DEp was recorded on days of highly variable atmospheric demand. The LT sensors also showed to be highly sensitive to changes on water stress. Any of the three methods have a potential as indicators for precise irrigation in hedgerow olive orchards with high plant density and low soil water-holding capacity.This experiment was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, research project AGL2009-11310/AGR.Peer Reviewe
Selective expression of the neurexin substrate for presenilin in the adult forebrain causes deficits in associative memory and presynaptic plasticity
Presenilins (PS) form the active subunit of the gamma-secretase complex, which mediates the proteolytic clearance of a broad variety of type-I plasma membrane proteins. Loss-of-function mutations in PSEN1/2 genes are the leading cause of familial Alzheimer's disease (fAD). However, the PS/gamma-secretase substrates relevant for the neuronal deficits associated with a loss of PS function are not completely known. The members of the neurexin (Nrxn) family of presynaptic plasma membrane proteins are candidates to mediate aspects of the synaptic and memory deficits associated with a loss of PS function. Previous work has shown that fAD-linked PS mutants or inactivation of PS by genetic and pharmacological approaches failed to clear Nrxn C-terminal frag-ments (NrxnCTF), leading to its abnormal accumulation at presynaptic terminals. Here, we generated transgenic mice that selectively recreate the presynaptic accumulation of NrxnCTF in adult forebrain neurons, leaving unaltered the function of PS/gamma-secretase complex towards other substrates. Behavioral characterization identified selective impairments in NrxnCTF mice, including decreased fear-conditioning memory. Electro-physiological recordings in medial prefrontal cortex-basolateral amygdala (mPFC-BLA) of behaving mice showed normal synaptic transmission and uncovered specific defects in synaptic facilitation. Conocimiento, conducta y actitud ante el Código europeo contra el cáncer por parte de los profesionales sanitarios de atención primaria
Objetivo: Determinar si los profesionales de atención primaria (AP) conocen el Código europeo contra el cáncer (CECC) y si ello se relaciona con que practiquen sus recomendaciones.
Diseño: Observacional descriptivo.
Emplazamiento: Centros de AP españoles.
Participantes: Profesionales de AP.
Intervenciones: Cuestionario autoadministrado.
Mediciones principales: Factores de riesgo y protectores del cáncer, pruebas de cribado y conocimiento del CECC.
Resultados: Respondieron 1.734 profesionales (10, 5%), edad media de 48, 5 años (DT: 9, 2), el 71, 5% mujeres. El 50, 0% desconoce el CECC; los tutores (OR = 1, 61), adscritos al PAPPS (OR = 1, 51) y que llevan más tiempo trabajando en AP (OR = 2, 62) son los que más lo conocen. El 7, 2% fuma y el 79, 1% bebe alcohol. El 64, 1% presenta normopeso y el 19% realiza actividad física. Evita exponerse al sol el 52, 7% y usa protectores el 53, 8%. El 85, 2% nunca se ha realizado un cribado colorrectal, el 11% nunca una citología y el 12% una mamografía. Existe relación entre conocer el CECC y el tabaquismo (p < 0, 001), sobrepeso/obesidad (p = 0, 024), actividad física (p = 0, 003), ingesta de carnes (p < 0, 001), mamografía (p < 0, 001), citología (p = 0, 022), PSA (p = 0, 045), así como el fomento de sus consejos entre los pacientes.
Conclusiones: El CECC es desconocido por la mitad de los profesionales de AP. La práctica de sus recomendaciones es desigual, siendo la prevalencia de tabaquismo baja, y la protección solar una conducta poco extendida. Los que lo conocen son los que más practican sus recomendaciones.
Objective: To decide if Primary Care (PC) professionals know the European Code against Cancer (CECC) and if this relates to practice the recommendations with themselves and with their patients.
Design: descriptive, observational study.
Setting: Spanish Health Centers.
Participants: Health professionals. Interventions: self-administered questionnaire. Main measurements: cancer protective and risk factors, screening for colorectal, breast, cervix and prostate cancer, level of knowledge of the ECAC.
Results: 1734 participants (10.5%), mean age 47.4 years (SD: 8.6), 71.5% female. 50.0% do not know the CECC; tutors (OR = 1.61), assigned to the PAPPS (OR = 1.51) and who have been working in AP for more time (OR = 2.62) are the ones who know it most. 7.2% smoke and 79.1% drink alcohol. 64.1% presented normal weight and 19% performed physical activity. They avoid exposing themselves to the sun 52.7% and use protectors 53.8%. 85.2% have never had a colorectal screening, 11% never had a cytology, and 12% had a mammogram. There is a relationship between knowing the CECC and smoking (P <.001), overweight/obesity (P =.024), physical activity (P =.003), meat intake (P <.001), mammography (P <.001), cytology (P =.022), PSA (P =.045), as well as the promotion of their advice among patients.
Conclusions: The CECC is unknown by half of the AP professionals. The practice of its recommendations is uneven, with the prevalence of low smoking, and sun protection a little extended behavior. Those who know him are the ones who most practice his recommendations
Using a process-based stomatal model in olive and its potential application to deficit irrigation studies
Over the last years modeling plant transpiration has been pointed out as a powerful tool to
optimize the management of irrigation in fruit trees. In this study we tested the
hydromechanical model of stomata functioning proposed by Buckley et al. (2003), a model
with a strong physiological basis. The great contribution of this model is that its parameters
have direct physiological meaning. Firstly, the model was simplified to make its parameters
estimation friendly and easy. Secondly, the model was fitted to data obtained in a hedgerow
olive orchard under regulated deficit irrigation. The hydromechanical model fitted our data

Effect of time to sentinel-node biopsy on the prognosis of cutaneous melanoma
Introduction: In patients with primary cutaneous melanoma, there is generally a delay between excisional biopsy of the primary tumour and sentinel-node biopsy. The objective of this study is to analyse the prognostic implications of this delay. Patients and method: This was an observational, retrospective, cohort study in four tertiary referral hospitals. A total of 1963 patients were included. The factor of interest was the interval between the date of the excisional biopsy of the primary melanoma and the date of the sentinel-node biopsy (delay time) in the prognosis. The primary outcome was melanoma-specific survival and disease-free survival. Results: A delay time of 40 days or less (hazard ratio (HR), 1.7; confidence interval (CI), 1.2-2.5) increased Breslow thickness (Breslow ⩾2 mm, HR, >3.7; CI, 1.4-10.7), ulceration (HR, 1.6; CI, 1.1-2.3), sentinel-node metastasis (HR, 2.9; CI, 1.9-4.2), and primary melanoma localised in the head or neck were independently associated with worse melanoma-specific survival (all P < 0.03). The stratified analysis showed that the effect of delay time was at the expense of the patients with a negative sentinel-node biopsy and without regression. Conclusion: Early sentinel-node biopsy is associated with worse survival in patients with cutaneous melanoma
Different HCV Exposure Drives Specific miRNA Profile in PBMCs of HIV Patients
Micro RNAs (miRNAs) are essential players in HIV and HCV infections, as both viruses modulate cellular miRNAs and interact with the miRNA-mediated host response. We aim to analyze the miRNA profile of HIV patients with different exposure to HCV to explore specific signatures in the miRNA profile of PBMCs for each type of infection. We massively sequenced small RNAs of PBMCs from 117 HIV+ infected patients: 45 HIV+ patients chronically infected with HCV (HIV/HCV+), 36 HIV+ that spontaneously clarified HCV after acute infection (HIV/HCV-) and 36 HIV+ patients without previous HCV infection (HIV). Thirty-two healthy patients were used as healthy controls (HC). Differential expression analysis showed significantly differentially expressed (SDE) miRNAs in HIV/HCV+ (n = 153), HIV/HCV- (n = 169) and HIV (n = 153) patients. We found putative dysregulated pathways, such as infectious-related and PI3K signaling pathways, common in all contrasts. Specifically, putatively targeted genes involved in antifolate resistance (HIV/HV+), cancer-related pathways (HIV/HCV-) and HIF-signaling (HIV) were identified, among others. Our findings revealed that HCV strongly influences the expression profile of PBMCs from HIV patients through the disruption of its miRNome. Izaña Atmospheric Research Center. Activity Report 2021-2022
Editors: Emilio Cuevas, Celia Milford and Oksana Tarasova.[EN]The Izaña Atmospheric Research Center (IARC), which is part of the State Meteorological Agency of Spain (AEMET), is a site of excellence in atmospheric science. It manages four observatories in Tenerife including the high altitude Izaña Atmospheric Observatory. The Izaña Atmospheric Observatory was inaugurated in 1916 and since that date has carried out uninterrupted meteorological and climatological observations, contributing towards a unique 100-year record in 2016. This reports are a summary of the many activities at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center to the broader community. The combination of operational activities, research and development in state-of-the-art measurement techniques, calibration and validation and international cooperation encompass the vision of WMO to provide world leadership in expertise and international cooperation in weather, climate, hydrology and related environmental issues.[ES]El Centro de Investigación Atmosférica de Izaña (CIAI), que forma parte de la Agencia Estatal de Meteorología de España (AEMET), representa un centro de excelencia en ciencias atmosféricas. EstuPlan: Methodology for the development of creativity in the resolution of scientific and social problems
[EN] Creative thinking is necessary to generate novel ideas and solve problems. "EstuPlan" is a methodology in which knowledge and creativity converge for the resolution of scientific problems with social projection. It is a training programme that integrates teachers, laboratory technicians and PhD students, master and undergraduate students which form working groups for the development of projects. Projects have a broad and essential scope and projection in terms of environmental problems, sustainable use of natural resources, food, health, biotechnology or biomedicine. The results show the success of this significant learning methodology using tools to develop creativity in responding to scientific and social demand for problem-solving to transfer academic knowledge to different professional environments.
