The mean curvature of cylindrically bounded submanifolds

We give an estimate of the mean curvature of a complete submanifold lying inside a closed cylinder B(r)×RB(r)\times\R^{\ell} in a product Riemannian manifold Nn×RN^{n-\ell}\times\R^{\ell}. It follows that a complete hypersurface of given constant mean curvature lying inside a closed circular cylinder in Euclidean space cannot be proper if the circular base is of sufficiently small radius. In particular, any possible counterexample to a conjecture of Calabion complete minimal hypersurfaces cannot be proper. As another application of our method, we derive a result about the stochastic incompleteness of submanifolds with sufficiently small mean curvature.Comment: First version (December 2008). A strategic reflection for the management and implementation of CAR-T therapy in Spain: an expert consensus paper

    Get PDF
CAR-T cell therapy represents a therapeutic revolution in the prognosis and treatment of patients with certain types of hematological cancer. However, they also pose new challenges in the healthcare, regulatory and financial fields. The aim of the RET-A project was to undertake a strategic reflection on the management of CAR-T therapies within the Spanish National Health System, to agree on recommendations that will help to better deal with the new context introduced by these cell therapies in the present and in the future. This think tank involved 40 key agents and opinion leaders. The experts identified three great challenges for implementing advanced therapies in Spain: therapeutic individualisation, with a multidisciplinary approach; acceleration of access times, by minimizing bureaucracy; and increase in the number of centers qualified to manage the CAR-T therapies in the NHS. The experts agreed on the ideal criteria for designating those qualified centers. They also agreed on a comprehensive CAR-T care pathway with the timings and roles which would ideally be involved in each part of the process. This study was funded by Gilead Sciences, Inc.Peer reviewe

Construction of antimicrobial peptide-drug combination networks from scientific literature based on a semi-automated curation workflow

    Get PDF
Considerable research efforts are being invested in the development of novel antimicrobial therapies effective against the growing number of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens. Notably, the combination of different agents is increasingly explored as means to exploit and improve individual agent actions while minimising microorganism resistance. Although there are several databases on antimicrobial agents, scientific literature is the primary source of information on experimental antimicrobial combination testing. This work presents a semi-automated database curation workflow that supports the mining of scientific literature and enables the reconstruction of recently documented antimicrobial combinations. Currently, the database contains data on antimicrobial combinations that have been experimentally tested against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Candida albicans, which are prominent pathogenic organisms and are well-known for their wide and growing resistance to conventional antimicrobials. Researchers are able to explore the experimental results for a single organism or across organisms. Likewise, researchers may look into indirect network associations and identify new potential combinations to be tested. The database is available without charges. ENSO impact on northwest African upwelling

    Get PDF
One of the most robust ENSO teleconnections is that linking SST anomalies in the equatorial Pacific and Tropical North Atlantic (TNA) in boreal spring. While the role played by the wind-evaporation-SST (WES) feedback in maintaining the ENSO-related SST anomalies over the TNA is well understood, many questions remain open about the signature of this ENSO teleconnection on the northwest African upwelling system and its role for the further response during the spring season along the whole TNA. This issue is analyzed here in both observations and CGCM models with different nominal resolution (CMIP6 HighResMIP simulations). In particular, the relevance of the mean state variability in the tropical Atlantic for modulating the northwest African upwelling response to ENSO has been assessed in depth. Furthermore, and considering the exceptional ecological importance of this upwelling area, the ENSO-related influence on the spatio-temporal variability of round sardinella (the dominant fish species in terms of abundance) has been also analyzed. To this aim, an end-to-end strategy which combines models of physics (hydrodynamic), lower trophic levels (nutrient-plankton) and upper trophic levels (sardinella), is used. All these analyses highlight from both climate and ecological perspectives, the relevance of better understanding the ENSO-northwest African upwelling teleconnection.Universidad de Málaga. On the essential spectrum of Nadirashvili-Martin-Morales minimal surfaces

We show that the spectrum of a complete submanifold properly immersed into a ball of a Riemannian manifold is discrete, provided the norm of the mean curvature vector is sufficiently small. In particular, the spectrum of a complete minimal surface properly immersed into a ball of R3\mathbb{R}^{3} is discrete. This gives a positive answer to a question of Yau.Comment: This article is an improvement of an earlier version titled On the spectrum of Martin-Morales minimal surfaces. 7 page

SensoGraph: Using proximity graphs for sensory analysis

    Get PDF
Sensory evaluation of foods is as important as chemical, physical or microbiological examinations, being specially relevant in food industries. Classical methods can be long and costly, making them less suitable for certain industries like the wine industry. Some alternatives have arisen recently, including Napping®, where the tasters represent the sensory distances between products by positioning them on a tablecloth; the more similar they perceive the products, the closer they position them on the tablecloth. This method uses multiple factor analysis (MFA) to process the data collected. The present paper introduces the software SensoGraph, which makes use of proximity graphs to analyze those data. The application is described and experimental results are presented in order to compare the performances of SensoGraph and Napping®, using eight wines from the Toro region and two groups of twelve tasters with different expertise.
