T-cell Lymphoma in the Nasal Cavity in Goat

Background: Lymphomas are considered uncommon in goats, being the multicentric form with the highest number of cases for the species. Primary intranasal lymphomas are often diagnosed in dogs, cats, and humans. In the literature, there is only a description of a multicentric case involving the frontal sinuses and mucosa of the nasal cavity in a goat; therefore, it is important to describe unusual cases of this disease for the inclusion of new clinical and pathological characteristics in the ruminant clinic medicine. The objective of this work is to describe a case of T-cell lymphoma in the nasal cavity of a young goat.Case: The animal had dyspnea and respiratory noise for 15 days. Clinical examination showed nodulation in the right nasal cavity associated with serosanguinous secretion. Tracheostomy was performed; however, after 30 days the animal was euthanized. A sagittal plane of the head showed a pinkish-gray mass in the right and left nasal cavity, with a smooth, multilobulated surface, smooth adhering to the rostral portion of the dorsal concha and occluding the dorsal nasal meatus. Submandibular lymph nodes were slightly enlarged. Histopathological examination of the nasal cavity revealed a non-encapsulated, poorly delimited and ulcerated tumor composed of round cells arranged in a mantle supported by a discrete fibrovascular stroma extending the mucosa and lamina propria. Cells were round with sparse, eosinophilic and poorly delimited cytoplasm. Nuclei varied from round to elongated with condensed chromatin and evident nucleoli. Occasionally, aberrant nuclei, reniform shape and multinucleated cells were seen. Pleomorphism was moderate characterized by anisocytosis and anisocariosis. Typical and atypical mitosis were frequent (0-4 per field of highest magnification [400x]). Amidst the neoplasm, there were multifocal areas of necrosis and hemorrhage associated with a mild lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate. Immunohistochemistry showed positive immunostaining for Vimentin antibodies and CD3, and negative for pan CK and CD20.Discussion: The lymphomas immunophenotyping is little used when it comes to farm animals, and there are few studies that use this technique for the definitive diagnosis of these neoplasms for small ruminants. The use of this technique must be considered in each case, in order to determine the pathogenesis, the accurate diagnosis and the origin of the neoplastic lymphocytes. In goats, T-cell lymphomas are the most diagnosed, although cases of multicentric B-cell lymphomas with ocular involvement have been diagnosed. In view of the clinical picture of the case described, infectious rhinitis already described in goats, such as aspergillosis and protothecosis, should be included as differential diagnoses. However, the anatomopathological findings facilitate the direction of the diagnosis, since infectious rhinitis presents as nodules / ulcerated masses or focal areas of necrosis associated with purulent secretion and in the histopathological examination it is possible to observe the intralesional etiological agents. In addition, the enzootic ethmoidal tumor must be included, as it has similar clinical signs and affects young animals, but they are adenomas/adenocarcinomas that affect the ethmoidal nasal shells induced by a retrovirus. Lymphomas in the caprine species are rare in the Northeastern semi-arid, but that in the present diagnostic routine occasionally occurs, being important the first description of its nasal shape for its inclusion in the differential diagnoses of diseases that present with clinical obstruction and dyspnea for the species. ETSC News: uma proposta educativa através de sítios digitais / ETSC News: an educational proposal through digital sites

O projeto ETSC News teve por objetivo a ampliação dos meios de aprendizagem  e divulgação científica através da criação de um sítio eletrônico, no qual um  conteúdo diverso das Ciências exatas foi postado – o sitio foi desenvolvido pela  equipe do projeto, que era composta de alunos do Ensino Médio. O já citado site  abrangeu diversas maneiras de fazer com que o conteúdo chegue até o usuário, tais  como: exposição de curiosidades científicas, compartilhamento de links para  plataformas científicas; vídeo aulas de diversos conteúdos das Ciências Exatas,  divulgação de eventos científicos locais e assuntos relacionados à Escola Técnica  de Saúde de Cajazeiras (ETSC), instituição precursora do projeto, entre outras  formas de aumentar a aquisição de conhecimento e auxílio à pesquisa daqueles que  frequentam o sítio. Devido à natureza do projeto, o método utilizado foi pesquisas de  cunho documental, pesquisas em bancos de dados, livros didáticos, e demais meios  de divulgação científica que apoiaram a apresentação de investigações e  informações exatas. Em suma, esse projeto, realizado em um ano, desenvolveu nos  pesquisadores a base da criticidade e o cuidado na realização de pesquisas e na  veracidade das informações. Além disso, o projeto auxiliou o processo de  aprendizado dos estudantes que estavam envolvidos nele. Nesse sentido, o projeto  ETSC News foi de relevância social e contribuiu para com o sistema de divulgação  científica, já que incluiu a audiência do site ETSC News e das outras plataformas do  projeto em um universo de fatos e experimentos revelados pela ciência

A ética do silêncio racial no contexto urbano: políticas públicas e desigualdade social no Recife, 1900-1940

Mais de meio século após o preconceito racial ter se tornado o principal alvo dos movimentos urbanos pelos direitos civis nos Estados Unidos e na África do Sul, e décadas depois do surgimento dos movimentos negros contemporâneos no Brasil, o conjunto de ferramentas legislativas criado no Brasil para promover o direito à cidade ainda adere à longa tradição brasileira de silêncio acerca da questão racial. Este artigo propõe iniciar uma exploração das raízes históricas desse fenômeno, remontando ao surgimento do silêncio sobre a questão racial na política urbana do Recife, Brasil, durante a primeira metade do século XX. O Recife foi eé um exemplo paradigmático do processo pelo qual uma cidade amplamente marcada por traços negros e africanos chegou a ser definida política e legalmente como um espaço pobre, subdesenvolvido e racialmente neutro, onde as desigualdades sociais originaram na exclusão capitalista, e não na escravidão e nas ideologias do racismo científico. Neste sentido, Recife lança luzes sobre a política urbana que se gerou sob a sombra do silêncio racial.More than half a century after racial prejudice became central to urban civil rights movements in the United States and South Africa, and decades after the emergence of Brazil’s contemporary Black movements, Brazil's internationally recognized body of rights-to-the-city legislation still adheres to the country's long historical tradition of racial silence. This article explores the historical roots of this phenomenon by focusing on the emergence of racial silence in Recife, Brazil during the first half of the 20th Century. Recife was and remains a paradigmatic example of the process through which a city marked by its Black and African roots came to be legally and politically defined as a poor, underdeveloped and racially neutral space, where social inequalities derived from capitalist exclusion rather than from slavery and scientific racism. Isolation and characterization of 24 microsatellite loci for the commercial Amazonian freshwater catfish Brachyplatystoma capapretum (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae)

Twenty-four microsatellite loci were characterized for the Pimelodidae Brachyplatystoma capapretum and tested on 26–38 individuals from the Amazon basin. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 1 to 12 with the observed and expected heterozygosity values varying from 0.02 to 0.93 and 0.08 to 0.81, respectively. Twenty-one of the loci were in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, and twenty-two were successfully cross-amplified in at least two Brachyplatystoma species. These loci will be usefully to measure the genetic diversity status on B. capapretum specie as in Brachyplatystoma genus. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht
