    Detection of the Power Spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background Lensing by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope

    We report the first detection of the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background through a measurement of the four-point correlation function in the temperature maps made by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. We verify our detection by calculating the levels of potential contaminants and performing a number of null tests. The resulting convergence power spectrum at 2-degree angular scales measures the amplitude of matter density fluctuations on comoving length scales of around 100 Mpc at redshifts around 0.5 to 3. The measured amplitude of the signal agrees with Lambda Cold Dark Matter cosmology predictions. Since the amplitude of the convergence power spectrum scales as the square of the amplitude of the density fluctuations, the 4-sigma detection of the lensing signal measures the amplitude of density fluctuations to 12%.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, replaced title and author list with version accepted by Physical Review Letters.     The western North Atlantic shelfbreak current system in summer

The definitive version was published in Journal of Physical Oceanography. 37 (2007): 2509-2533, doi:10.1175/JPO3123.1.Twelve years of historical hydrographic data, spanning the period 1990–2001, are analyzed to examine the along-stream evolution of the western North Atlantic Ocean shelfbreak front and current, following its path between the west coast of Greenland and the Middle Atlantic Bight. Over 700 synoptic sections are used to construct a mean three-dimensional description of the summer shelfbreak front and to quantify the along-stream evolution in properties, including frontal strength and grounding position. Results show that there are actually two fronts in the northern part of the domain—a shallow front located near the shelf break and a deeper front centered in the core of Irminger Water over the upper slope. The properties of the deeper Irminger front erode gradually to the south, and the front disappears entirely near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The shallow shelfbreak front is identifiable throughout the domain, and its properties exhibit large variations from north to south, with the largest changes occurring near the Tail of the Grand Banks. Despite these structural changes, and large variations in topography, the foot of the shelfbreak front remains within 20 km of the shelf break. The hydrographic sections are also used to examine the evolution of the baroclinic velocity field and its associated volume transport. The baroclinic velocity structure consists of a single velocity core that is stronger and penetrates deeper where the Irminger front is present. The baroclinic volume transport decreases by equal amounts at the southern end of the Labrador Shelf and at the Tail of the Grand Banks.     Morphology of Hydatellaceae, an anomalous aquatic family recently recognized as an early-divergent angiosperm lineage

    © 2007 Botanical Society of America, Inc.The family Hydatellaceae was recently reassigned to the early-divergent angiosperm order Nymphaeales rather than the monocot order Poales. This dramatic taxonomic adjustment allows comparison with other early-divergent angiosperms, both extant and extinct. Hydatellaceae possess some monocot-like features that could represent adaptations to an aquatic habit. Ecophysiological parallels can also be drawn from fossil taxa that are known from small achene-like diaspores, as in Hydatellaceae. Reproductive units of Hydatellaceae consist of perianthlike bracts enclosing several pistils and/or stamens. In species with bisexual reproductive units, a single unit resembles an "inside-out" flower, in which stamens are surrounded by carpels that are initiated centrifugally. Furthermore, involucre development in Trithuria submersa, with delayed growth of second whorl bracts, resembles similar delayed development of the second perianth whorl in Cabomba. Several hypotheses on the homologies of reproductive units in Hydatellaceae are explored. Currently, the most plausible interpretation is that each reproductive unit represents an aggregation of reduced unisexual apetalous flowers, which are thus very different from flowers of Nymphaeales. Each pistil in Hydatellaceae is morphologically and developmentally consistent with a solitary ascidiate carpel. However, ascidiate carpel development, consistent with placement in Nymphaeales, is closely similar to pseudomonomerous pistil development as in Poaes.Paula J. Rudall, Dmitry D.
