Multi-scheme approach for efficient surface plasmon polariton generation in metallic conical tips on AFM-based cantilevers
We report on the possibility of realizing adiabatic surface plasmon polaritons compression on metallic conical tips built-in on AFM cantilevers by means of different approaches. The problem is faced considering the role of the source, when linear and radial polarizations are assumed, associated to different fabrication schemes. Nano-patterned devices properly combined with metallic conical tips can affect the adiabatic characteristic of the surface electric field. The results are analyzed in terms of tradeoff between fabrication difficulties and device performances. Suggestions on the best possible scheme are provided
Terahertz dipole nanoantenna arrays: resonance characteristics
Resonant dipole nanoantennas promise to considerably improve the capabilities of terahertz spectroscopy, offering the possibility of increasing its sensitivity through local field enhancement, while in principle allowing unprecedented spatial resolutions, well below the diffraction limit. Here, we investigate the resonance properties of ordered arrays of terahertz dipole nanoantennas, both experimentally and through numerical simulations. We demonstrate the tunability of this type of structures, in a range (∼1–2 THz) that is particularly interesting and accessible by means of standard zinc telluride sources. We additionally study the near-field resonance properties of the arrays, finding that the resonance shift observed between near-field and far-field spectra is predominantly ascribable to ohmic damping

We describe a novel tool based on biodegradable nanoporous nanoparticles (NPNPs) that allows the harvesting of low-molecular-weight fractions of crude human serum or other biofluids. NPNPs with a diameter of 200 nm and pore size of a few nm were obtained by ultrasonication of nanoporous silicon. When incubated with a solution, the NPNPs harvest only the molecules small enough to be absorbed into the nanopores. Then they can be recovered by centrifugation and dissolved in water, making the harvested molecules available for further analyses. Results: Fluorescence microscopy, gel electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry were used to show the enrichment of low-molecular-weight fraction of serum under physiological conditions, with a cut-off of 13 kDa and an enrichment factor >50.Conclusion: From these findings, we conclude that ability to tune pore size, combined with the availability of hundreds of biomolecule cross-linkers, opens up new perspectives on complex biofluid analysis, discovery of biomarkers, and in situ drug delivery. Keywords: nanoporous silicon, nanoparticle, biomarker discovery, human serum proteomics, harvestin
Extremely large extinction efficiency and field enhancement in terahertz resonant dipole nanoantennas
The distinctive ability of nanometallic structures to manipulate light at the nanoscale has recently promoted their use for a spectacular set of applications in a wide range of areas of research including artificial optical materials, nano-imaging, biosensing, and nonlinear optics. Here we transfer this concept to the terahertz spectral region, demonstrating a metal nanostructure in shape of a dipole nanoantenna, which can efficiently resonate at terahertz frequencies, showing an effective cross section >100 times larger than its geometrical area, and a field enhancement factor of ~280, confined on a lateral section of ~λ/1,000. These results lead to immediate applications in terahertz artificial materials exhibiting giant dichroism, suggest the use of dipole nanoantennas in nanostructure-based terahertz metamaterials, and pave the way for nanoantenna-enhanced terahertz few-molecule spectroscopy and localized terahertz nonlinear optics
Broadband stimulated Raman imaging based on multi-channel lock-in detection for spectral histopathology
Spontaneous Raman microscopy reveals the chemical composition of a sample in a label-free and non-invasive fashion by directly measuring the vibrational spectra of molecules. However, its extremely low cross section prevents its application to fast imaging. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) amplifies the signal by several orders of magnitude thanks to the coherent nature of the nonlinear process, thus unlocking high-speed microscopy applications that provide analytical information to elucidate biochemical mechanisms with subcellular resolution. Nevertheless, in its standard implementation, narrowband SRS provides images at only one frequency at a time, which is not sufficient to distinguish constituents with overlapping Raman bands. Here, we report a broadband SRS microscope equipped with a home-built multichannel lock-in amplifier simultaneously measuring the SRS signal at 32 frequencies with integration time down to 44 μs, allowing for detailed, high spatial resolution mapping of spectrally congested samples. We demonstrate the capability of our microscope to differentiate the chemical constituents of heterogeneous samples by measuring the relative concentrations of different fatty acids in cultured hepatocytes at the single lipid droplet level and by differentiating tumor from peritumoral tissue in a preclinical mouse model of fibrosarcoma
