A MDL-based Model of Gender Knowledge Acquisition
This paper presents an iterative model of\ud
knowledge acquisition of gender information\ud
associated with word endings in\ud
French. Gender knowledge is represented\ud
as a set of rules containing exceptions.\ud
Our model takes noun-gender pairs as input\ud
and constantly maintains a list of\ud
rules and exceptions which is both coherent\ud
with the input data and minimal with\ud
respect to a minimum description length\ud
criterion. This model was compared to\ud
human data at various ages and showed a\ud
good fit. We also compared the kind of\ud
rules discovered by the model with rules\ud
usually extracted by linguists and found\ud
interesting discrepancies
Computational Cognitive Models of Summarization Assessment Skills
This paper presents a general computational cognitive model of the way a summary is assessed by teachers. It is based on models of two subprocesses: determining the importance of sentences and guessing the cognitive rules that the student may have used. All models are based on Latent Semantic Analysis, a computational model of the representation of the meaning of words and sentences. Models' performances are compared with data from an experiment conducted with 278 middle school students. The general model was implemented in a learning environment designed for helping students to write summaries
A morphogenetic crop model for sugar-beet (Beta vulgaris L.)
This paper is the instructions for the proceeding of the International
Symposium on Crop. Sugar beet crop models have rarely taken into account the
morphogenetic process generating plant architecture despite the fact that plant
architectural plasticity plays a key role during growth, especially under
stress conditions. The objective of this paper is to develop this approach by
applying the GreenLab model of plant growth to sugar beet and to study the
potential advantages for applicative purposes. Experiments were conducted with
husbandry practices in 2006. The study of sugar beet development, mostly
phytomer appearance, organ expansion and leaf senescence, allowed us to define
a morphogenetic model of sugar beet growth based on GreenLab. It simulates
organogenesis, biomass production and biomass partitioning. The functional
parameters controlling source-sink relationships during plant growth were
estimated from organ and compartment dry masses, measured at seven different
times, for samples of plants. The fitting results are good, which shows that
the introduced framework is adapted to analyse source-sink dynamics and
shoot-root allocation throughout the season. However, this approach still needs
to be fully validated, particularly among seasons
The SUMER Data in the SOHO Archive
We have released an archive of all observational data of the VUV spectrometer
Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) on SOHO that has
been acquired until now. The operational phase started with 'first light'
observations on 27 January 1996 and will end in 2014. Future data will be added
to the archive when they become available. The archive consists of a set of raw
data (Level 0) and a set of data that are processed and calibrated to the best
knowledge we have today (Level 1). This communication describes step by step
the data acquisition and processing that has been applied in an automated
manner to build the archive. It summarizes the expertise and insights into the
scientific use of SUMER spectra that has accumulated over the years. It also
indicates possibilities for further enhancement of the data quality. With this
article we intend to convey our own understanding of the instrument performance
to the scientific community and to introduce the new, standard-FITS-format
database.Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication by Solar Physic
