Efficient synchronization of one-dimensional chaotic quadratic maps by different couling terms

    Get PDF
The possibility of chaotic systems oscillate in a coherent and synchronized way is not an obvious phenomenon, since it is not possible to reproduce exactly the initial conditions and the sensitive dependence on initial conditions is one of the main characteristics associated with the chaotic behavior. We consider synchronization phenomena of discrete chaotic dynamical systems (identical or non-identical) with nonlinear unidirectional and bidirectional coupling schemes. In order to illustrate the synchronization methods present in this paper, we always use a system of two coupled chaotic quadratic maps. First, we present a systematic way to design unidirectional and bidirectional coupling schemes for synchronizing arbitrary pairs of one-dimensional chaotic maps. In dissipative coupling, we use two methods to study the stability of synchronous state: the linear stability and the Lyapunov functional analysis. Second, we explore other coupling schemes. With the unidirectional coupling based on the singular value decomposition it is possible to suppress the exponential divergence of the dynamics of the synchronization error and to guarantee linear stability of the synchronized state in all points of the state space. The other coupling scheme is asymmetric and appears in natural a family of analytic complex quadratic maps

Synchronization of chaotic dynamical systems: a brief review

    Get PDF
There are several reasons for the approach to chaos synchronization. This phenomenon is immediately interesting because of its high potential for applications. But, first of all, it is particularly interesting the study of a phenomenon that requires the adjustment of dynamic behaviors in order to obtain a coincident chaotic motion, being this possible even in chaotic dynamical systems in which sensitive dependence on initial conditions is one of the features. The possibility of applying techniques of chaos control in order to optimize the results of synchronization is alsoa motivating factor for the study of this phenomenon. It is presented a brief review of preliminary notions on nonlinear dynamics and then is considered in detail the synchronization of chaotic dynamical systems, both in continuous and discrete time

Budgetary balances adjustments from governmental accounting to national accounts in EU countries: can deficits be prone to management?

    Get PDF
European Union (EU) countries are required to achieve deficit targets and are thus incentivized to use tools to keep within budgetary limits. This paper argues that accounting discretion might be used to manage some adjustments made during the translation of data from Governmental Accounting (GA) into National Accounts (NA), to window‐dress the final deficit/surplus reported to EUROSTAT. The empirical research shows there are certain circumstances that might facilitate the use of GA–NA “adjustment discretion.” EU authorities must pay special attention to these conditions to ensure the reliability of reported deficits. The main findings of this paper could also assist in future efforts to improve the integrity of the adjustment process.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Evolution of proanthocyanidins in bunch stems during berry development (Vitis vinifera L.)

Proanthocyanidins from bunch stems of two red varieties (Castelao Frances and Touriga Francesa) and one white variety (Viosinho)(Vitis vinifera L,) harvested in 1998, were separated into monomers (catechins), oligomers (degree of polymerization ranging from 2 to 12-15) and polymers (degree of polymerization >12-15), and then quantified during grape development (40 d before veraison until ripening). In addition, low molecular weight catechins [(+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin], dimeric procyanidins (B1, B2, B3, B4), galloylated dimeric procyanidins (B13-0-gallate, B2-3-0-gallate, B2-3'-0-gallate), and trimeric procyanidins (C1, T2) from grape stems were quantified by HPLC, At harvest the polymeric fraction was the most abundant (28.0 - 35.8 mg . g-1 stem). For the three grape varieties, the content of catechins, oligomeric and polymeric fractions decreased during berry development mainly after veraison, Crape stems are also an important source of proanthocyanidins in the grape cluster when compared to the flavanol content in seeds. From an industrial point of view, stems seem to be an important source of proanthocyanidins for potential use as nutriceutical, enological products, chemical standards or even in winemaking to regulate flavanol composition in wine.

Efficient synchronization with chaotic quadratic maps

We present a systematic way to design unidirectional and bidirectional coupling schemes for synchronizing arbitrary pairs of (identical or different) discrete dynamical systems. If the coupled chaotic systems are very similar or identical, using the singular value decomposition, it is possible to suppress the exponential divergence of the dynamics of the synchronization error, and exploit the existing contraction properties of the given systems. When non-identical systems are coupled, in order to achieve synchronization it is necessary to employ some other techniques from linear algebra, stability theory and control. We use two methods to study the stability of synchronous state: the linear stability and the Lyapunov functional analysis. In order to illustrate these methods, we use a system of two coupled chaotic quadratic maps. The map obtained by coupling exhibits a richer dynamics that the single quadratic map, but is still possible to study its behaviour

Organizational Learning in the Hotel Industry: an eclectic instrument of measurement

    Get PDF
Organizational Learning, despite being a widely debated topic in the literature on management, regarding the hotel industry still suffers from scattered information. This study was conducted with 295 professionals, among them managers and employees of hotels in Brazil and Portugal in order to validate a measuring instrument of organizational learning, properly adapted for hotel industry, and identify differences in the degree of efficiency of the organizational learning process between hotels of different categories, and between managers and employees. Initially a content validation with representatives of the hotel industry was made, than a confirmatory factor analysis was performed. As a result, we obtained a scale with 4 factors and 12 items, which was able to identify differences in the level of organizational learning between hotels and between managers and employees. There is evidence that the ability of individuals and groups to learn is encouraged, but is not being achieved in full in this industry, and that the most critical part of the process involves the dimension of creation and knowledge management in this industry.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Comparing the performance of two structural indicators for different water models while seeking for connections between structure and dynamics in the glassy regime

    Get PDF
In this work, we compare the performance of two structural indicators based on the degree of translational order up to the second coordination shell in three water models: SPC/E, TIP4P/2005, and TIP5P. Beyond directly contrasting their distributions for different temperatures to evidence their usefulness in estimating the fraction of structured and unstructured molecules and, when possible, their classification capability, we also correlate them with an indirect measure of structural constraint: the dynamic propensity. Furthermore, this procedure enables us to show the existence of evident correlations between structural and dynamical information. More specifically, we find that locally structured molecules display a preference for low dynamic propensity values and, more conspicuously, that locally unstructured molecules are extremely subject to high dynamic propensity. This result is particularly relevant for the supercooled regime where the establishment of firm links between the structure and dynamics has remained rather elusive since the occurrence of dynamics that vary in orders of magnitude upon supercooling usually contrast with barely noticeable overall structural changes.Fil: Verde, Alejandro Raúl.
