Revisiting materials for teaching languages for specific purposes

Teaching materials in languages for specific purposes have evolved in the last few years dramatically. The Internet currently plays a significant role in such development and has permitted both a wider range of resources and its free availability almost anywhere in the World. This paper presents a selection of different types of recent materials for English for Specific Purposes. The paper begins by defining ESP. Then it approaches how materials should shape the student’s own learning, how materials should be selected according to the different skills and then emphasizes the importance of the Internet as a source of materials. The paper concludes with a set of ideas for the future development of ESP materials. Modelling tax decentralisation and regional growth

The aim of this paper is to determine a theoretical linkage between tax decentralisation and regional growth. For this purpose a two fiscal tiers growth model is specified. First, working on Zou (1996) analytical framework, which account for the potential effects of intergovernmental policies on regional growth, a tax decentralisation process is brought in. Next its original model is expanded taking into account such process. It is shown that the effect of tax decentralisation on regional growth depends on the existing relationship between private and regional public capital productivities ratio and their stocks ratio square root. Finally a hypothesis for the Spanish economy is obtained. It will be checked empirically in subsequent work. Tradición oral y simbolismo de la lingüística. Las conferencias Comunicación y lenguaje (Madrid, 1974)

[spa] En 1974 lingüistas españoles, coordinados por Rafael Lapesa, pronunciaron diez conferencias sobre lingüística. El libro Comunicación y lenguaje (Lapesa 1977) reproduce el contenido de las exposiciones. Este artículo realiza un estudio textual y contextual de la publicación. A pesar de su función divulgativa, las conferencias aportan un panorama sagaz de la lingüística en España. La nómina de oradores muestra los intereses de las cátedras de gramática española y lingüística en la universidad española. Esta época audaz, heterogénea y condescendiente permite una comparación simbólica con el Barroco. Sus rasgos son la pluralidad y la confrontación de corrientes, así como un neoplatonismo formalista y ahistoricista. El artículo concluye que las conferencias de 1974 son un episodio simbólico de una época barroca. [eng] In 1974, coordinated by Rafael Lapesa, Spanish linguists pronounced ten lectures on linguistics. The book Communication and Language (Lapesa 1977) reproduces the content of the presentations. This article takes a textual and contextual study of the publication. Despite its informative function, conferences bring a shrewd panorama of linguistics in Spain. The list of speakers shows the interest of the departments of Spanish grammar and linguistics in Spanish universities. This time, bold, diverse and condescending, suggests a symbolic project compared to the Baroque. His features are the plurality and confrontation of doctrines, as well as a formalist and antihistoricist neoplatonism. Memorias de lingüistas estadounidenses: First Person Singular

El artículo trata de los relatos autobiográficos de lingüistas estadounidenses sobre su vida profesional. Considera las aportaciones de los editores Thomas A. Sebeok (1966), Boyd H. Davis y Raymond K. O'Cain (1980) y E. F. Konrad Koerner (1991, 1998). Forman un amplio repertorio de 90 escritos biográficos (Sebeok) y de 43 autobiografías (Davis, O'Cain y Koerner). La lingüística estadounidense tiene un carácter pionero en éste ámbito y muestra en sus relatos el extraordinario dinamismo de sus autores. El artículo considera la autobiografía como una fuente documental de la corriente narrativa de la historiografía, que permite estudiar la trayectoria vital de los autores y trazar el panorama de la lingüística contemporánea. Entre otros lingüistas, el artículo comenta la figura de Dwight Bolinger como un epítome multifacético y brillante de la lingüística concebida en primera persona del plural. Las voces de estos lingüistas buscan con relatos el sentido de sus vidas y desmienten la fugacidad de la memoria colectiva. [Abstract] The article deals with the autobiographical accounts of American linguists on their professional lives. Consider the contributions of the publishers Thomas A. Sebeok (1966), Davis and Raymond H. Boyd K. O'Cain (1980) and E. F Konrad Koerner (1991, 1998). They form a vast repertoire of 90 biographical writings (Sebeok) and 43 autobiographies (Davis, O'Cain and Koerner). Linguistics in USA has a pioneering nature in this area and shows in its accounts the extraordinary dynamism of the authors. The article considers the autobiography as a documentary source of the narrative historiography trend, which allows to study the trajectory of the authors and chart the landscape of contemporary linguistics. Among other linguists, the paper chooses and analyzes the figure of Dwight Bolinger as a multifaceted and brilliant example of American linguistics, thought in the first person plural. The voices of those linguists inquire with stories about the meaning of their lives and face the transience of collective memory

Los diccionarios de lingüística, repertorios de historia de la lingüística (1973-2008)

[cas] Este artículo analiza cinco diccionarios de lingüística publicados entre los años setenta del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI. Sus autores son J. Dubois (1973), G. Mounin (1975), G. R. Cardona (1988), J. C. Richards, J. Platt y H. Platt (1992), y D. Crystal (1980-2008). El estudio considera de manera diferenciada a estos autores, porque la influencia doctrinal de los dos primeros es proporcionalmente mayor que los posteriores, menos implicados en la formulación de manifiestos sobre el papel de los diccionarios en la lingüística. Las partes del artículo presentan, como características diferenciales, el preciosismo descriptivo de G. Mounin, la obra propedéutica de G. R. Cardona, el diccionario aplicado y mixto de J. C. Richards, J. Platt y H. Platt, y la institución lexicográfica de D. Crystal. El estudio aporta perspectiva histórica al problema terminológico de la lingüística, agitada en esta época por una gran expansión de teorías y tecnicismos. Los prefacios de estos diccionarios especializados forman un repertorio significativo para la historia de la lingüística. En ellos se registra los rasgos de la evolución de la lingüística, desde ciencia guía y modelo formal a disciplina muy ramificada y modelo contextual e histórico. Estos lexicógrafos, autores de los cinco diccionarios, dan respuesta a la pregunta sobre el papel del diccionario especializado en el progreso de la lingüística. This paper analyzes five language dictionaries published between the seventies of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century. The authors are J. Dubois (1973), G. Mounin (1975), G. R. Cardona (1988), J. C. Richards, J. Platt and H. Platt (1992), and D. Crystal (1980-2008). The parts of the article present, as differential characteristics, the rigorous description of G. Mounin, the propaedeutic work of GR Cardona, the applied and mixed dictionary of JC Richards, J. Platt and H. Platt, and the lexicographic institution of D. Crystal . The study provides historical perspective about the terminological problem of linguistic, agitated at this time for a major expansion of theories and technicalities. The prefaces of these dictionaries are a significant repertoire for the history of linguistics. In them the features of the evolution of linguistics is recorded: linguistics has been science guide and formal model and it is now a highly branched discipline and contextual and historical model. These lexicographers, authors of the five dictionaries, give answer to the question about the role of specialized in the progress of linguistic dictionary. La lingüística en su mito, como paradigma e ideología

The article analyzes the work of Serge Latouche, Lingüística y economía política (1973), and Augusto Ponzio, Gramática transformacional e ideología política (1972). These texts relate analogically structural and generative linguistics with economy and ideology. The paper interprets these writings with the linguistic turn in the twentieth century and the structuralist attitude of Human and Social sciences. This study uses the thought of philologist and poet J. Valente to understand the role of language as a paradigm and cultural myth. In the texts of S. Latouche and A. Ponzio Linguistics is object of praise and criticism for its limitations in the study of discourse. Key words: historiography, structuralism, generative grammar, paradigm, economy, ideology, linguistic turn. El artículo analiza las obras de Serge Latouche, Lingüística y economía política (1973), y Augusto Ponzio, Gramática transformacional e ideología política (1972). Son textos que relacionan de manera analógica la lingüística estructural y generativista con la economía y la ideología. El artículo interpreta estos escritos a la luz del giro lingüístico del siglo XX y la actitud estructuralista de las ciencias humanas y sociales. Este estudio utiliza el pensamiento del filólogo y poeta J. A Valente para comprender el papel de la lingüística como paradigma y mito cultural. En los textos de S. Latouche y A. Ponzio la lingüística es objeto de elogio y de crítica por sus limitaciones en el estudio del discurso. Is exchange rate – customer order flow relationship linear? Evidence from the Hungarian FX market

over the last decade, the microstructure approach to exchange rates has become very popular. The underlying idea of this approach is that the order flows at different levels of aggregation contain valuable information to explain exchange rate movements. The bulk of empirical literature has focused on evaluating this hypothesis in a linear framework. This paper analyzes nonlinearities in the relation between exchange rates and customer order flows. We show that the relationship evolves over time and that it is different under different market conditions defined by exchange rate volatility. Further, we found that the nonlinearity can be captured successfully by the Threshold regression and Markov Switching models, which provide substantial explanatory power beyond the constant coefficients approach.customer order flows, nonlinear models, microstructure, exchange rate

El artículo describe e interpreta la preferencia de la lingüística axiomática por una de las diversas corrientes de la filosofía del lenguaje del siglo XX, la filosofía analítica del lenguaje ideal. El artículo estudia las principales contribuciones de los últimos cincuenta años de la filosofía del lenguaje. Son las compilaciones editadas por K. A. Fodor y J. J. Katz (The Structure of Language. Readings in the Philosophy of Language, 1964), J. R. Searle (The philosophy of language, 1971) y G. Grewendorf y G. Meggle (Linguistik und Philosophie, 1974). También se toma en cuenta las obras de M. Bunge (Lingüística y filosofía, 1983), J. Ferrater Mora (Indagaciones sobre el lenguaje, 1970) y E. Lledó (Filosofía y lenguaje, 1970). La apertura o elección general de la lingüística a la filosofía del lenguaje ideal ha comportado el cierre a corrientes como la filosofía del lenguaje ordinario, la hermenéutica y el pragmatismo. La filosofía del lenguaje ordinario teoriza sobre los actos de habla, la hermenéutica se ocupa de la conciencia histórica y el pragmatismo trata de la aplicación de la filosofía a la vida social. La tesis de este estudio es que la lingüística puede madurar con una filosofía del lenguaje integradora, abierta a multiplicidad de corrientes, a la historicidad, a la diversidad del canon y a una praxis crítica.This paper describes the relationship between Linguistics and Philosophy of language, and it interprets the choice made by axiomatic Linguistics of Analytic Philosophy of the ideal language, from a variety of options. The paper reviews the major contributions of the past fifty years of Philosophy of language. They are compilations edited by K.A. Fodor and J.J. Katz (The Structure of Language. Readings in the Philosophy of Language, 1964), J.R. Searle (The philosophy of language, 1971) and G. Grewendorf and G. Meggle (Linguistik und Philosophie, 1974). It also takes into account the works of M. Bunge (Linguistics and Philosophy, 1983), J. Ferrater Mora (Inquiries about language, 1970) and E. Lledó (Philosophy and Language, 1970). The opening –the election– of Linguistics to Analytic Philosophy of the ideal language has led to the rejection of disciplines such as Analytic Philosophy of ordinary language, Hermeneutics and Pragmatism. The Philosophy of ordinary language theorizes about speech acts, Hermeneutics deals with the historical consciousness and Pragmatism is the application of philosophy to social life. The thesis of this study is that Linguistics can grow with an inclusive Philosophy of language, open to multiple flows, to the historicity, to diversity of canon and to critical praxis

Mental health nursing consultancy for primary health care

El artículo expone una experiencia de investigación-acción con objeto de instaurar un programa de apoyo al diagnóstico de autoconcepto. Su objetivo es constatar la viabilidad de la figura de la enfermera consultora en el sistema sanitario. La metodología utilizada integra un proyecto en tres fases: proyecto de mejora de calidad con objetivo de dilucidar las causas que dificultan la implantación del diagnóstico de Autoconcepto, intervención sobre las causas y un nuevo proyecto de mejora para la evaluación final de la implantación del diagnostico.This article describes a research-action experience whose aim was implementing a support programme for the diagnose of self-concept. The purpose is to state the viability of the consultant nurse as a figure within the health care system. The used methodology integrates a project in three phases: project of quality improvement in order to find out the reasons that prevent the diagnose of self-concept from being implemented, intervention on these reasons, and a new project of improvement for the final evaluation of the diagnose implementation
