    Design of Combustor for Long-range Ram-jet Engine and Performance of Rectangular Analog

    The report describes the design of a piloted combustor intended for a ram-jet engine of long flight range. The unit comprises a large annular basket of V-type cross-section, the inner surface of which is slotted and bent into small V-gutters. At the trailing edge of the basket, eight V-gutters are used to propagate the flame into the main stream. A rectangular analog of this combustor was tested at air-flow conditions corresponding to those that might be obtained during cruise. At these conditions, combustion efficiencies of as much as 90 percent were calculated for the combustor at the design equivalence ratio of 0.52. The performance of the unit was relatively insensitive to mounting and flow variables; the greatest effect on efficiency was that of the manner and location of the fuel injection. A full-scale version of this combustor has been designed for a 48-inch-diameter engine

    Optimization of Gutzwiller Wavefunctions in Quantum Monte Carlo

    Gutzwiller functions are popular variational wavefunctions for correlated electrons in Hubbard models. Following the variational principle, we are interested in the Gutzwiller parameters that minimize e.g. the expectation value of the energy. Rewriting the expectation value as a rational function in the Gutzwiller parameters, we find a very efficient way for performing that minimization. The method can be used to optimize general Gutzwiller-type wavefunctions both, in variational and in fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo.Comment: 9 pages RevTeX with 10 eps figure

    Photorespiration: metabolic pathways and their role in stress protection

    Photorespiration results from the oxygenase reaction catalysed by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase. In this reaction glycollate-2-phosphate is produced and subsequently metabolized in the photorespiratory pathway to form the Calvin cycle intermediate glycerate-3-phosphate. During this metabolic process, CO2 and NH3 are produced and ATP and reducing equivalents are consumed, thus making photorespiration a wasteful process. However, precisely because of this ine¤ciency, photorespiration could serve as an energy sink preventing the overreduction of the photosynthetic electron transport chain and photoinhibition, especially under stress conditions that lead to reduced rates of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation. Furthermore, photorespiration provides metabolites for other metabolic processes, e.g. glycine for the synthesis of glutathione, which is also involved in stress protection. In this review, we describe the use of photorespiratory mutants to study the control and regulation of photorespiratory pathways. In addition, we discuss the possible role of photorespiration under stress conditions, such as drought, high salt concentrations and high light intensities encountered by alpine plants

    A computer program for the generalized chi-square analysis of categorical data using weighted least squares (GENCAT)

    GENCAT is a computer program which implements an extremely general methodology for the analysis of multivariate categorical data. This approach essentially involves the construction of test statistics for hypotheses involving functions of the observed proportions which are directed at the relationships under investigation and the estimation of corresponding model parameters via weighted least squares computations. Any compounded function of the observed proportions which can be formulated as a sequence of the following transformations of the data vector -- linear, logarithmic, exponential, or the addition of a vector of constants -- can be analyzed within this general framework. This algorithm produces minimum modified chi-square statistics which are obtained by partitioning the sums of squares as in ANOVA. The input data can be either: (a) frequencies from a multidimensional contingency table; (b) a vector of functions with its estimated covariance matrix; and (c) raw data in the form of integer-valued variables associated with each subject.     Mutations in FRMD7, a newly identified member of the FERM family, cause X-linked idiopathic congenital nystagmus.

    Idiopathic congenital nystagmus is characterized by involuntary, periodic, predominantly horizontal oscillations of both eyes. We identified 22 mutations in FRMD7 in 26 families with X-linked idiopathic congenital nystagmus. Screening of 42 singleton cases of idiopathic congenital nystagmus (28 male, 14 females) yielded three mutations (7%). We found restricted expression of FRMD7 in human embryonic brain and developing neural retina, suggesting a specific role in the control of eye movement and gaze stability

    Risk for Clostridium difficile Infection after Radical Cystectomy for Bladder Cancer: Analysis of a Contemporary Series

    Introduction This study seeks to evaluate the incidence and associated risk factors of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer. Methods We retrospectively reviewed a single institution׳s bladder cancer database including all patients who underwent RC between 2010 and 2013. CDI was diagnosed by detection of Clostridium difficile toxin B gene using polymerase chain reaction–based stool assay in patients with clinically significant diarrhea within 90 days of the index operation. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify demographics and perioperative factors associated with developing CDI. Results Of the 552 patients who underwent RC, postoperative CDI occurred in 49 patients (8.8%) with a median time to diagnosis after RC of 7 days (interquartile range: 5–19). Of the 122 readmissions for postoperative complications, 10% (n = 12) were related to CDI; 2 patients died of sepsis directly related to severe CDI. On multivariate logistic regression, the use of chronic antacid therapy (odds ratio = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.02–3.68, P = 0.04) and antibiotic exposure greater than 7 days (odds ratio = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.11–4.44, P = 0.02) were independently associated with developing CDI. The use of preoperative antibiotics for positive findings on urine culture within 30 days before surgery was not statistically significantly associated with development of CDI (P = 0.06). Conclusions The development of CDI occurs in 8.8% of patients undergoing RC. Our study demonstrates that use of chronic antacid therapy and long duration of antimicrobial exposure are associated with development of CDI. Efforts focusing on minimizing antibiotic exposure in patients undergoing RC are needed, and perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis guidelines should be followed

    Precise Modeling of the Exoplanet Host Star and CoRoT Main Target HD 52265

    This paper presents a detailed and precise study of the characteristics of the Exoplanet Host Star and CoRoT main target HD 52265, as derived from asteroseismic studies. The results are compared with previous estimates, with a comprehensive summary and discussion. The basic method is similar to that previously used by the Toulouse group for solar-type stars. Models are computed with various initial chemical compositions and the computed p-mode frequencies are compared with the observed ones. All models include atomic diffusion and the importance of radiative accelerations is discussed. Several tests are used, including the usual frequency combinations and the fits of the \'echelle diagrams. The possible surface effects are introduced and discussed. Automatic codes are also used to find the best model for this star (SEEK, AMP) and their results are compared with that obtained with the detailed method. We find precise results for the mass, radius and age of this star, as well as its effective temperature and luminosity. We also give an estimate of the initial helium abundance.
