Aristocratic female inheritance and property holding in thirteenth-century England

This thesis explores aristocratic female inheritance and property holding in the thirteenth century, a relatively neglected topic within existing scholarship. Using the heiresses of the earldoms and honours of Chester, Pembroke, Leicester and Winchester as case studies, this thesis sheds light on the processes of female inheritance and the effects of coparceny in a turbulent period of English history. The lives of the heiresses featured in this thesis span the reigns of three English kings: John, Henry III and Edward I. The reigns of John and Henry saw bitter civil wars, whilst Edward’s was plagued with expensive foreign wars. The heiresses discussed here inherited the lands of some of the most important honours in England and the partition of these patrimonies between female coheirs undoubtedly had an effect on landholding and political society. There were numerous instances when the property rights of female coheirs were negotiated and compromised. Nonetheless, the property rights of women with regard to inheritance, marriage portion and dower were protected by law and remained important to the crown. As wives and widows, these women had an interest in the lands they had inherited and regularly participated in the legal disputes surrounding them. An examination of the roles these heiresses played in these suits and more generally in English society demonstrates the different avenues by which noblewomen could exercise agency in the thirteenth century

Isabella de Forz: a woman in the age of baronial reform and rebellion, 1237-1293

Isabella de Forz (1237-1293), countess of Devon and Aumale and lady of the Isle of Wight, was the wealthiest noblewoman in thirteenth-century England. Isabella, who was of impressive lineage, became the heiress to the earldom of Devon following the death of her brother in 1262. Existing records provide a wealth of evidence regarding Isabella's life especially the years of her widowhood (1260-1293) and the extent of her power and influence within English politics. Isabella’s allegiance was of great importance and she was very much involved in the events surrounding the Barons’ War of 1263-1267. Much of the extant evidence relates to Isabella's defence of her lands and rights, a necessity for all noblewomen. In addition to this we find the countess engaged in numerous other activities, including intercession and religious patronage. A reconstruction of the countess' affinity not only offers insights into her position within society as well as her sense of self, but also informs us of the strength of the ties of lordship within thirteenth-century England. The chapters that form this thesis are designed to highlight the varying ways in which noblewomen were able to participate in politics and to discuss the activities, role and importance of one of the most influential women of this period. In doing so, this research will add to the existing scholarship on aristocratic women

An evaluation of the effects of blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) behavior on the efficacy of crab pots as a tool for estimating population abundance

Crab traps have been used extensively in studies on the population dynamics of blue crabs to provide estimates of catch per unit of effort; however, these estimates have been determined without adequate consideration of escape rates. We examined the ability of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) to escape crab pots and the possibility that intraspecific crab interactions have an effect on catch rates. Approximately 85% of crabs that entered a pot escaped, and 83% of crabs escaped from the bait chamber (kitchen). Blue crabs exhibited few aggressive behavioral interactions in and around the crab pot and were documented to move freely in and out of the pot. Both the mean number and size of crabs caught were significantly smaller at deeper depths. Results from this study show that current estimates of catch per unit of effort may be biased given the high escape rate of blue crabs documented in this study. The results of this paper provide a mechanistic view of trap efficacy, and reveal crab behavior in and around commercial crab pots

If the United States is to regain the competitive edge, retain leadership in the international aerospace arena and achieve the national aerospace goals, we must have more well qualified scientists and engineers entering the workforce as well as the highly qualified technicians necessary to design, build, operate and maintain our aerospace hardware. The nation\u27s educational system is not keeping pace with this demand for scientists and engineers. The necessary workforce will not be available unless prompt action is taken to ensure it. This paper reviews shortfalls in our educational systems today, showing where the U.S. stands relative to the rest of the industrialized nations. The complex dimensions of these issues are discussed as well as initiatives that are in work around the country in an attempt to counteract some of the problems. The roles of aerospace workers as individuals and aerospace companies as major stakeholders in the nation\u27s future are addressed. Some of the more effective approaches to the enhancement of our educational system which could be supported by the aerospace community are highlighted

Columbia Missouri is getting bigger in every aspect. From parking lots to mega apartment complexes Columbia is expanding its borders constantly. Because of this rapid growth there are many effects of the construction that takes place daily in multiple regions of this city. The reason for all of the construction is the inflow of people from the surrounding cities and states. More people more cars and more cars means more air-borne pollution. Having a major university in the heart of Columbia does not help the air or soil with a student body of over 35,000. If not corrected, these emissions such as fugitive dust can lead to large problems in our environment

BIOS 9231: Bayesian Statistics I

This course provides the student with an introduction Bayesian analysis and compares Bayesian methods to that of frequentists. The course includes selection of prior distributions, computing posterior distributions, and conjugate models such as the Beta-Binomial, Normal-Normal, and Gamma-Poisson models. Bayesian inference using point and interval estimation, Bayesian hierarchical models, and exchangeability will be explored. Topics including Empirical Bayes versus a fully Bayes approach, Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods and model checking using Bayes factors and sensitivity analyses will be included. Prerequisite: A minimum grade of B in BIOS 9131, or permission from instructor
