    Analysis of basic value levels of sport high school and general high school students according to receiving physical education and sports courses

    The aim of this study was to analyze basic value level of Anatolian Sport High School and General High School students according to their receiving Physical Education and Sports courses. As 296 girls and 324 boys from General High School and 84 boys and 49 girls from Anatolian High School students, totally 753 students participated in research. In order to collect data related to independent and dependent variables, “Personal Information Form” and “Portrait Values Scale” were applied to high school students. Research data was evaluated by using Independent Sample T Test with statistics packet program. According to research results, meaningful difference in support of General High School was found at humanistic basic values which Power, Success, Excitement, Self-Management, Universalism, Benevolence, Compliance and Safety related to sub dimension according to Anatolian Sport High School and General High School students school types. Besides it was found that total points related to basic values vary according to gender and meaningful differences were found for the benefit of the girls. Meaningful differences were not found at Hedonism and Conventionalism sub levels

    Increased oxidative stress is associated with insulin resistance and infertility in polycystic ovary syndrome

    Objectives: The present study aims to investigate the role of oxidant-antioxidant status in young women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Material and methods: Seventy-one women with PCOS and 53 healthy controls are compared in aspect of demographic characteristics, biochemical data, hormones, and oxidant-antioxidant status.Results: The PCOS group had significantly lower zinc, higher malondialdehyde and gluthathione peroxidase and lower serum catalase levels than the control group (p = 0.016, p < 0.001, p = 0.043 and p = 0.025 respectively). The PCOS patients with IR had significantly higher malondialdehyde, lower catalase and serum zinc levels than the PCOS patients without IR (p = 0.015, p = 0.010, p = 0.001 respectively). The infertile PCOS patients had significantly higher malondialdehyde, lower catalase and serum zinc levels than the fertile PCOS patients (p = 0.022, p = 0.045,p = 0.001 respectively). There was a statistically significant and positive correlation between HOMA-IR and malondialdehyde values (r = 0.523, p = 0.001), between HOMA-IR and glutathione peroxidase values (r = 0.468, p = 0.001) and between HOMA-IR and zinc values (r = 0.601, p = 0.001). There was a statistically significant and negative correlation between HOMA-IR and catalase values (r = –0.493, p = 0.001).Conclusions: The patients with PCOS are under oxidative stress and this oxidative stress seems to be the highest in patients with IR and with infertility. Despite the prominent increase in the oxidative stress, there was a variation in the antioxidant response

    Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in human mobility patterns in Holocene Southwest Asia and the East Mediterranean

    We present a spatiotemporal picture of human genetic diversity in Anatolia, Iran, Levant, South Caucasus, and the Aegean, a broad region that experienced the earliest Neolithic transition and the emergence of complex hierarchical societies. Combining 35 new ancient shotgun genomes with 382 ancient and 23 present-day published genomes, we found that genetic diversity within each region steadily increased through the Holocene. We further observed that the inferred sources of gene flow shifted in time. In the first half of the Holocene, Southwest Asian and the East Mediterranean populations homogenized among themselves. Starting with the Bronze Age, however, regional populations diverged from each other, most likely driven by gene flow from external sources, which we term “the expanding mobility model.” Interestingly, this increase in inter-regional divergence can be captured by outgroup-f3_3-based genetic distances, but not by the commonly used FST_{ST} statistic, due to the sensitivity of FST_{ST}, but not outgroup-f3_3, to within-population diversity. Finally, we report a temporal trend of increasing male bias in admixture events through the Holocene

    Autoantibodies against type I IFNs in patients with life-threatening COVID-19

    Interindividual clinical variability in the course of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is vast. We report that at least 101 of 987 patients with life-threatening coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia had neutralizing immunoglobulin G (IgG) autoantibodies (auto-Abs) against interferon-w (IFN-w) (13 patients), against the 13 types of IFN-a (36), or against both (52) at the onset of critical disease; a few also had auto-Abs against the other three type I IFNs. The auto-Abs neutralize the ability of the corresponding type I IFNs to block SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro. These auto-Abs were not found in 663 individuals with asymptomatic or mild SARS-CoV-2 infection and were present in only 4 of 1227 healthy individuals. Patients with auto-Abs were aged 25 to 87 years and 95 of the 101 were men. A B cell autoimmune phenocopy of inborn errors of type I IFN immunity accounts for life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia in at least 2.6% of women and 12.5% of men

However, in the literature, only 1 patient with isolated hypoglossal nerve paralysis caused by gunshot has been published. the authors describe a 34-year-old man suffering from unilateral isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy caused by gunshot injury as a second reported patient. the bullet entered maxillary sinus, and caused condylar fracture, then ended up C1-2 interspace. the bullet was surgically removed by a posterior approach. It is important to pay attention to hypoglossal nerve injury when confronted with a gunshot wound. the authors recommend early and sufficient surgical decompression

There are no published studies concerning a relationship between retinal nerve fiber layer and human sphenoid sinus volumes. We investigated this relationship.Material and Methods:Spectral-domain OCT. the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and sphenoid sinus volume estimation of both sides of sex-matched patients were retrospectively analyzed.Results:The mean RNFL thicknesses at the left side (91.8 mu m) were significantly smaller than the right side (94.5 mu m) (P=0.040). However, the mean left sinus volume (44.5cm(3)) is larger than the right side, (34.5mm(3)) (P<0.005). Left and right differences of both parameters are statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion:There is a negative correlation between mean RNFL thicknesses and mean sinus volumes. To our knowledge, this article is the first report demonstrating the asymmetry relationship between RNFL and sphenoid sinus volumes
