    Phase-resolved Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectroscopy

    We present highly time-resolved HST FOS UV spectroscopy of the nova-like binary V795 Her. Several key results emerge. For the first time we find a strong 2.6-h signature in the variability of the UV lines. The HST data reveal no evidence of a 4.8-h ‘period’, in contrast to our previous IUE observations. This, and differences in the spectral line characteristics, suggests that HST found the system in a different state from earlier IUE observations. The C IV line alone contains a fairly stable, asymmetric, extended blueward absorption trough which we associate with a wind outflow. The 2.6-h variations of the line profiles are largely confined to an interval of about 0.4 in phase and to the velocity regime −1500 < v < 0 km s−1, the changes being dominated by the apparent decline and re-emergence of a blueshifted emission peak. The complex profiles permit many empirical interpretations, but the simplest attributes the variability to a narrow (FWHM∼1000 km s−1) emission component which is always blueshifted with a mean velocity of around –600 km s−1. This interpretation, however, is not readily related to any obvious source within the binary. An alternative picture, which attempts to relate the UV and (simultaneously observed) optical line behaviour, invokes a more stable, broad (FWHM∼2000 km s−1) emission feature, the intrinsic morphology of which is disguised by superposed constant and variable absorption components. One tentative physical explanation of such a decomposition involves an accretion stream that overflows the accretion disc. However, several problems with this model remain to be resolved. We also draw attention to similarities between the velocity-restricted behaviour in the UV lines of V795 Her and that in the optical lines of T Tauri stars. This might indicate a connection between V795 Her and the magnetically influenced inflow/outflow characteristics associated with the central star in T Tauri systems. If such a connection were eventually demonstrated, it would reopen the question of whether the 2.6-h period in V795 Her is really the binary period and whether the system is in fact related to the intermediate polars

    (Re)fashioning Biafra: identity, authorship and the politics of dress in half of a yellow sun and other narratives of the Nigeria-Biafra war

    Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s second novel, Half of a Yellow (2006), is one in a long line of works by Nigerian authors to portray the Nigeria-Biafra War (1967-1970). While Adichie has stated that she wanted to make modern Nigeria aware of its history by writing the novel, the writer has also revealed that she drew from past literary portrayals to construct her narrative. In order to untangle the complex construction of Half of a Yellow Sun, this article explores the way the novel negotiates the literary legacy of Biafra through material fashion, which I argue elucidates this complex intertextuality. Furthermore, I contend that the novel draws attention to and critiques the way that understanding of Biafra has been dominated by novels written by male authors, and weaves threads of material fashion in order to offer a new way of negotiating Nigerian history

    An XMM and Chandra view of massive clusters of galaxies to z=1

    The X-ray properties of a sample of high redshift (z>0.6), massive clusters observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra are described, including two exceptional systems. One, at z=0.89, has an X-ray temperature of T=11.5 (+1.1, -0.9) keV (the highest temperature of any cluster known at z>0.6), an estimated mass of (1.4+/-0.2)x10^15 solar masses and appears relaxed. The other, at z=0.83, has at least three sub-clumps, probably in the process of merging, and may also show signs of faint filamentary structure at large radii,observed in X-rays. In general there is a mix of X-ray morphologies, from those clusters which appear relaxed and containing little substructure to some highly non-virialized and probably merging systems. The X-ray gas metallicities and gas mass fractions of the relaxed systems are similar to those of low redshift clusters of the same temperature, suggesting that the gas was in place, and containing its metals, by z=0.8. The evolution of the mass-temperature relation may be consistent with no evolution or with the ``late formation'' assumption.     The X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert I galaxy Markarian 766: Dusty warm absorber or relativistic emission lines?

    Competing models for broad spectral features in the soft X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert I galaxy Mrk 766 are tested against data from a 130 ks XMM-Newton observation. A model including relativistically broadened Lyalpha emission lines of O VIII N VII and C VI is a better fit to 0.3-2 keV XMM RGS data than a dusty warm absorber. Moreover, the measured depth of neutral iron absorption lines in the spectrum is inconsistent with the magnitude of the iron edge required to produce the continuum break at 17-18 Angstrom in the dusty warm absorber model. The relativistic emission line model can reproduce the broadband (0.1-12 keV) XMM EPIC data with the addition of a fourth line to represent emission from ionized iron at 6.7 keV and an excess due to reflection at energies above the iron line. The pro le of the 6.7 keV iron line is consistent with that measured for the low-energy lines. There is evidence in the RGS data, at the 3sigma level, of spectral features that vary with source flux. The covering fraction of warm absorber gas is estimated to be 12%. Iron in the warm absorber is found to be overabundant with respect to CNO, compared to solar values

    In this paper, the feasibility of using electromagnetic (EM) waves is determining the moisture content of building fabrics and the case of water ingress in experimentally assessed. This paper will concentrate on investigating the propagation of EM waves through typical structures and their interaction with concealed pipework, wiring and timber. All current methods are overviewed and analysed. Novel microwave sensor described in this paper operates in 6 GHz to 12 GHz frequency range using Marconi 6200A microwave test set. Results of experimental test confirm that microwaves can be used as an alternative nondestructive method for identifying different object behind the walls

    XMM-Newton observations of the ultra-compact binary RX J1914+24

    We present XMM–Newton observations of the 569-s-period system RX J1914+24 (V407 Vul). This period is believed to represent the binary orbital period making it an ultracompact binary system. By comparing the phase of the rise to maximum X-ray flux at various epochs (this includes observations made using ROSAT, ASCA and Chandra) we find that the system is spinning up at a rate of 3.17 ± 0.07 × 10−12 s s−1. We find that the spectra soften as the X-ray flux declines towards the off-phase of the 569-s period. Further, the spectra are best fitted by an absorbed blackbody component together with a broad emission feature around 0.59 keV. This emission feature is most prominent at the peak of the on-phase. We speculate on its origin

    XMM-Newton observations of UW CrB -- detection of X-ray bursts and evidence for accretion disc evolution

    UW CrB (MS1603+2600) is a peculiar short period X-ray binary that exhibits extraordinary optical behaviour. The optical light curve shape of the system changes drastically from night to night, without any changes in overall brightness. Here we report X-ray observations of UW CrB obtained with {\it XMM-Newton}. We find evidence for several X-ray bursts confirming a neutron star primary. This considerably strengthens the case that UW CrB is an Accretion Disc Corona (ADC) system located at a distance of at least 5--7 kpc, (3--5 kpc above the galactic plane). The X-ray and optical monitor (UV+optical) light curves show remarkable shape variation from one observing run to another, which we suggest are due to large scale variations in the accretion disc shape resulting from a warp which periodically obscures the optical and soft X-ray emission. This is also supported by the changes in phase-resolved X-ray spectra.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    GP-SUM. Gaussian Processes Filtering of non-Gaussian Beliefs

    This work studies the problem of stochastic dynamic filtering and state propagation with complex beliefs. The main contribution is GP-SUM, a filtering algorithm tailored to dynamic systems and observation models expressed as Gaussian Processes (GP), and to states represented as a weighted sum of Gaussians. The key attribute of GP-SUM is that it does not rely on linearizations of the dynamic or observation models, or on unimodal Gaussian approximations of the belief, hence enables tracking complex state distributions. The algorithm can be seen as a combination of a sampling-based filter with a probabilistic Bayes filter. On the one hand, GP-SUM operates by sampling the state distribution and propagating each sample through the dynamic system and observation models. On the other hand, it achieves effective sampling and accurate probabilistic propagation by relying on the GP form of the system, and the sum-of-Gaussian form of the belief. We show that GP-SUM outperforms several GP-Bayes and Particle Filters on a standard benchmark. We also demonstrate its use in a pushing task, predicting with experimental accuracy the naturally occurring non-Gaussian distributions.Comment: WAFR 2018, 16 pages, 7 figure

    We describe an infinite-dimensional algebra of hidden symmetries for the self-dual gravity equations. Besides the known diffeomorphism-type symmetries (affine extension of w(infinity) algebra), this algebra contains new hidden symmetries, which are an affine extension of the Lorentz rotations. The full symmetry algebra has both Kac-Moody and Virasoro-like generators, whose exponentiation maps solutions of the field equations to other solutions.     We show that a wide class of tree-level scattering amplitudes involving scalars, gauge bosons, and gravitons, up to three of which may be massive, can be expressed in terms of a Cachazo-He-Yuan representation as a sum over solutions of the scattering equations.
