Necrotizing meningoencephalitis in atypical dog breeds: a case series and literature review.
BackgroundCanine necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME) is a fatal, noninfectious inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. NME has been reported only in a small number of dog breeds, which has led to the presumption that it is a breed-restricted disorder.Hypothesis/objectivesOur objective was to describe histopathologically confirmed NME in dog breeds in which the condition has not been reported previously and to provide preliminary evidence that NME affects a wider spectrum of dog breeds than previously reported.AnimalsFour dogs with NME.MethodsArchives from 3 institutions and from 1 author's (BS) collection were reviewed to identify histopathologically confirmed cases of NME in breeds in which the disease has not been reported previously. Age, sex, breed, survival from onset of clinical signs, and histopathologic findings were evaluated.ResultsNecrotizing meningoencephalitis was identified in 4 small dog breeds (Papillon, Shih Tzu, Coton de Tulear, and Brussels Griffon). Median age at clinical evaluation was 2.5 years. Histopathologic abnormalities included 2 or more of the following: lymphoplasmacytic or histiocytic meningoencephalitis or encephalitis, moderate-to-severe cerebrocortical necrosis, variable involvement of other anatomic locations within the brain (cerebellum, brainstem), and absence of detectable infectious agents.Conclusions and clinical importanceUntil now, NME has only been described in 5 small dog breeds. We document an additional 4 small breeds previously not shown to develop NME. Our cases further illustrate that NME is not a breed-restricted disorder and should be considered in the differential diagnosis for dogs with signalment and clinical signs consistent with inflammatory brain disease
Inversion of exciton level splitting in quantum dots
The demonstration of degeneracy of exciton spin states is an important step toward the production of entangled photon pairs from the biexciton cascade. We measure the fine structure of exciton and biexciton states for a large number of single InAs quantum dots in a GaAs matrix; the energetic splitting of the horizontally and vertically polarized components of the exciton doublet is shown to decrease as the exciton confinement decreases, crucially passing through zero and changing sign. Thermal annealing is shown to reduce the exciton confinement, thereby increasing the number of dots with splitting close to zero
"I've made this my lifestyle now": a prospective qualitative study of motivation for lifestyle change among people with newly diagnosed type two diabetes mellitus

in the qualitative transcripts.Background: Diagnosis with Type 2 Diabetes is an opportunity for individuals to change their physical activity and
dietary behaviours. Diabetes treatment guidelines recommend theory-based, patient-centred care and advocate the
provision of support for patient motivation but the motivational experiences of people newly diagnosed with
diabetes have not been well studied. Framed in self-determination theory, this study aimed to qualitatively explore
how this patient group articulate and experience different types of motivation when attempting lifestyle change.
Methods: A secondary analysis of semi-structured interview data collected with 30 (n female = 18, n male = 12)
adults who had been newly diagnosed with type two diabetes and were participants in the Early ACTID trial was
undertaken. Deductive directed content analysis was performed using NVivo V10 and researcher triangulation to
identify and describe patient experiences and narratives that reflected the motivation types outlined in selfdetermination theory and if/how these changed over time.
Results: The findings revealed the diversity in motivation quality both between and within individuals over
time and that patients with newly-diagnosed diabetes have multifaceted often competing motivations for
lifestyle behaviour change. Applying self-determination theory, we identified that many participants reported
relatively dominant controlled motivation to comply with lifestyle recommendations, avoid their non-compliance
being “found out” or supress guilt following lapses in behaviour change attempts. Such narratives were accompanied
by experiences of frustrating slow behaviour change progress. More autonomous motivation was expressed as
something often achieved over time and reflected goals to improve health, quality of life or family time.
Motivational internalisation was evident and some participants had integrated their behaviour change to a
new way of life which they found resilient to common barriers.
Conclusions: Motivation for lifestyle change following diagnosis with type two diabetes is complex and can
be relatively low in self-determination. To achieve the patient empowerment aspirations of current national
health care plans, intervention developers, and clinicians would do well to consider the quality not just quantity of their

Swimming using surface acoustic waves
Microactuation of free standing objects in fluids is currently dominated by the rotary propeller, giving rise to a range of potential applications in the military, aeronautic and biomedical fields. Previously, surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have been shown to be of increasing interest in the field of microfluidics, where the refraction of a SAW into a drop of fluid creates a convective flow, a phenomenon generally known as SAW streaming. We now show how SAWs, generated at microelectronic devices, can be used as an efficient method of propulsion actuated by localised fluid streaming. The direction of the force arising from such streaming is optimal when the devices are maintained at the Rayleigh angle. The technique provides propulsion without any moving parts, and, due to the inherent design of the SAW transducer, enables simple control of the direction of travel
Diel turbidity cycles in a headwater stream: evidence of nocturnal bioturbation?
Purpose: A small number of recent studies have linked daily cycles in stream turbidity to nocturnal bioturbation by aquatic fauna, principally crayfish, and demonstrated this process can significantly impact upon water quality under baseflow conditions. Adding to this limited body of research, we use high-resolution water quality monitoring data to investigate evidence of diel turbidity cycles in a lowland, headwater stream with a known signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) population and explore a range of potential causal mechanisms. Materials and methods: Automatic bankside monitoring stations measured turbidity and other water quality parameters at 30-min resolution at three locations on the River Blackwater, Norfolk, UK during 2013. Specifically, we focused on two 20-day periods of baseflow conditions during January and April 2013 which displayed turbidity trends typical of winter and spring seasons, respectively. The turbidity time-series, which were smoothed with 6.5 hour Savitzky-Golay filters to highlight diel trends, were correlated against temperature, stage, dissolved oxygen and pH to assess the importance of abiotic influences on turbidity. Turbidity was also calibrated against suspended particulate matter (SPM) over a wide range of values via linear regression. Results and discussion: Pronounced diel turbidity cycles were found at two of the three sites under baseflow conditions during April. Spring night-time turbidity values consistently peaked between 21:00 and 04:00 with values increasing by ~10 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) compared with the lowest recorded daytime values which occurred between 10:00 and 14:00. This translated into statistically significant increases in median midnight SPM concentration of up to 76% compared with midday, with night-time (18:00 – 05:30) SPM loads also up to 30% higher than that recorded during the daytime (06:00 – 17:30). Relating turbidity to other water quality parameters exhibiting diel cycles revealed there to be neither any correlation that might indicate a causal link, nor any obvious mechanistic connections to explain the temporal turbidity trends. Diel turbidity cycles were less prominent at all sites during the winter. Conclusions: Considering the seasonality and timing of elevated turbidity, visual observations of crayfish activity, and an absence of mechanistic connections with other water quality parameters, the results presented here are consistent with the hypothesis that nocturnal bioturbation is responsible for generating diel turbidity cycles under baseflow conditions in headwater streams. However, further research in a variety of fluvial environments is required to better assess the spatial extent, importance and causal mechanisms of this phenomenon
A Systematic Review of Online Sex Addiction and Clinical Treatments Using CONSORT Evaluation
Researchers have suggested that the advances of the Internet over the past two decades have gradually eliminated traditional offline methods of obtaining sexual material. Additionally, research on cybersex and/or online sex addictions has increased alongside the development of online technology. The present study extended the findings from Griffiths’ (2012) systematic empirical review of online sex addiction by additionally investigating empirical studies that implemented and/or documented clinical treatments for online sex addiction in adults. A total of nine studies were identified and then each underwent a CONSORT evaluation. The main findings of the present review provide some evidence to suggest that some treatments (both psychological and/or pharmacological) provide positive outcomes among those experiencing difficulties with online sex addiction. Similar to Griffiths’ original review, this study recommends that further research is warranted to establish the efficacy of empirically driven treatments for online sex addiction
Technical performance and diagnostic utility of the new Elecsys (R) neuron-specific enolase enzyme immunoassay
This international multicenter study was designed to evaluate the technical performance of the new double-monoclonal, single-step Elecsys neuron-specific enolase (NSE) enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and to assess its utility as a sensitive and specific test for the diagnosis of small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Intra and interassay coefficients of variation, determined in five control or serum specimens in six laboratories, ranged from 0.7 to 5.3 (interlaboratory median: 1.3%) and from 1.3 to 8.5 (interlaboratory median: 3.4%), respectively. Laboratory-to-laboratory comparability was excellent with respect to recovery and interassay coefficients of variation. The test was linear between 0.0 and 320 ng/ml (highest measured concentration). There was a significant correlation between NSE concentrations measured using the Elecsys NSE and the established Cobas Core NSE EIA II in all subjects (n=723) and in patients with lung cancer (n=333). However, NSE concentrations were systematically lower (approximately 9%) with the Elecsys NSE than with the comparison test. Based on a specificity of 95% in comparison with the group suffering from benign lung diseases (n=183), the cutoff value for the discrimination between malignant and benign conditions was set at 21.6 ng/ml. NSE was raised in 73.4% of SCLC patients (n=188) and was significantly higher (p<0.01) in extensive (87.8%) as opposed to limited disease (56.7%). NSE was also elevated in 16.0% of the cases with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC, n=374). It is concluded that the Elecsys NSE EIA is a reliable and accurate diagnostic procedure for the measurement of NSE in serum samples. Learning and Matching Multi-View Descriptors for Registration of Point Clouds
Critical to the registration of point clouds is the establishment of a set of
accurate correspondences between points in 3D space. The correspondence problem
is generally addressed by the design of discriminative 3D local descriptors on
the one hand, and the development of robust matching strategies on the other
hand. In this work, we first propose a multi-view local descriptor, which is
learned from the images of multiple views, for the description of 3D keypoints.
Then, we develop a robust matching approach, aiming at rejecting outlier
matches based on the efficient inference via belief propagation on the defined
graphical model. We have demonstrated the boost of our approaches to
registration on the public scanning and multi-view stereo datasets. The
superior performance has been verified by the intensive comparisons against a
variety of descriptors and matching methods
Dynamical Autler-Townes control of a phase qubit
Routers, switches, and repeaters are essential components of modern
information-processing systems. Similar devices will be needed in future
superconducting quantum computers. In this work we investigate experimentally
the time evolution of Autler-Townes splitting in a superconducting phase qubit
under the application of a control tone resonantly coupled to the second
transition. A three-level model that includes independently determined
parameters for relaxation and dephasing gives excellent agreement with the
experiment. The results demonstrate that the qubit can be used as a ON/OFF
switch with 100 ns operating time-scale for the reflection/transmission of
photons coming from an applied probe microwave tone. The ON state is realized
when the control tone is sufficiently strong to generate an Autler-Townes
doublet, suppressing the absorption of the probe tone photons and resulting in

Constrictive pericarditis is an easily overlooked cause of right heart failure: a case report
We describe a patient who suffered progressive right heart failure of unknown aetiology, despite a lengthy series of hospital investigations. Constrictive pericarditis had not been suspected during life, and was ultimately diagnosed as an autopsy finding. The salient clinical features and confirmatory investigations for this unusual disorder are reviewed. The case reminds us to consider the possibility of constrictive pericarditis in patients with unexplained chronic right heart failure, so that prompt investigation and treatment can be instigated
