Mallorca, 1362-1511
The late medieval crisis led to intense processes of land accumulation, generally attributed to the action of social groups from outside the rural world, to the nobility and the urban patriciate, agents that impressed a new rationality on the agrarian economy from above and from outside. However, as M. Bloch advocated, in this early accumulation of land the well-to-do peasantry played an important role. This study aims to show how through their intervention in the land, labour and capital markets the members of the upper strata of the peasantry were able to accumulate extensive patrimonies and lay the foundations of agrarian capitalism. This analysis focuses on the documentation of a family from the east of the island of Mallorca during the fifteenth century, where there was an intense process of land accumulation and creation of large commercial exploitations.

Agricultural Production and Productivity in the Island of Majorca, 1590- 1860
This paper proposes a detailed measurement of the agricultural development
of the island of Majorca from the late sixteenth century to the midnineteenth
century, with an emphasis on the products which made up the
bulk of the island’s agricultural production. The authors have organized
most of the existing databases in the island’s archives and have also incorporated
quantitative and qualitative material from their own research and that
of other colleagues. Due to their quality and regularity, the data are among
the richest known for pre-industrial Europe. These sources lead to some
conclusions which link with recent debates in European economic history
concerning the calculation of economic growth in economies for periods
before statistics were kept. The text presents a methodological analysis covering
almost 80 per cent of agricultural production of the island of Majorca
and leaves conclusions to be supplemented by further studies of the manufacturing
and service sectors.
The process of appropriation of land by the aristocracy which took place in Mallorca in the
fifteenth century was very uneven geographically and socially. The purpose of th paper is to
investigate the factors that may explain this unequal intensity in the alienation of peasant
land. The study is based on the court rolls of the crown and of manors in the Lloseta district.
The authors show that in this district the formation of estates was more intense in the mountains
than on the plains. Most of the lands were sold by the families of wealthy peasants. Finally,
they identify some of the factors that could explain the nature of those different path-ways: everyday forms of peasant resistance to relinquishing land, agrarian landscapes and the
territorial interests of the aristocracy
‘At the rate of 28 sous and a half oil per month, and mesureta’: The wages of female olive pickers in Mallorca, 1645 – 1687
The purpose of this article is to make an empirical contribution to the reconstruction of female wages in the pre-industrial agricultural sector. Despite the complexity involved in the construction of wage-series, particularly those of women’s wages, it is worthy continuing using and improving them in order to understand the social and economic functioning of pre-industrial agrarian societies. The study focus on the island of Majorca where an important olive oil specialization through large farms took place along the 17th century exporting its surplus to the international market. Female and child labour were hired in those farms to pick olives, which became a key factor in the reproduction of this agricultural system. For these reasons, the knowledge of the evolution of wages is a crucial element in capturing the evolution of the exploitation expenses, as well as the importance of wages in the income and living standards of agricultural families
