    Changes in mental health services and suicide mortality in Norway: an ecological study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mental disorders are strongly associated with excess suicide risk, and successful treatment might prevent suicide. Since 1990, and particularly after 1998, there has been a substantial increase in mental health service resources in Norway. This study aimed to investigate whether these changes have had an impact on suicide mortality.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used Poisson regression analyses to assess the effect of changes in five mental health services variables on suicide mortality in five Norwegian health regions during the period 1990-2006. These variables included: number of man-labour years by all personnel, number of discharges, number of outpatient consultations, number of inpatient days, and number of hospital beds. Adjustments were made for sales of alcohol, sales of antidepressants, education, and unemployment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the period 1990-2006, we observed a total of 9480 suicides and the total suicide rate declined by 26%. None of the mental health services variables were significantly associated with female or male suicide mortality in the adjusted analyses (p > 0.05). Sales of antidepressants (adjusted Incidence Rate Ratio = 0.98; 95% CI = 0.97-1.00) and sales of alcohol (adjusted IRR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.18-1.72) were significantly associated with female suicide mortality; education (adjusted IRR = 0.86; 95% CI = 0.79-0.94) and unemployment (adjusted IRR = 0.91; 95% CI = 0.85-0.97) were significantly associated with male suicide mortality.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The adjusted analyses in the present study indicate that increased resources in Norwegian mental health services in the period 1990-2006 were statistically unrelated to suicide mortality.</p

Beregninger viser at vekstratene til konsumprisindeksen spesielt har blitt påvirket av omleggingen til ny metode for beregning av selveiernes bokostnader og hyppigere innarbeiding av husleieendringer. Totalt sett vil denne omleggingen trolig bidra til at årsveksten for konsumprisindeksen blir 0,2 prosentpoeng høyere i 2000, enn hvis det ikke var foretatt noen endring.     Under embargo until: 2022-07-23Background Emphysema and exercise induced desaturation (EID) are both related to poorer COPD prognosis. More knowledge of associations between emphysema and desaturation is needed for more efficient disease management. Research question Is emphysema a risk factor for both new and repeated desaturation, and is emphysema of more or less importance than other known risk factors? Methods 283 COPD patients completed a 6-min walk test (6MWT) at baseline and one year later in the Bergen COPD cohort study 2006–2011. Degree of emphysema was assessed as percent of low attenuation areas (%LAA) under −950 Hounsfield units using high-resolution computed tomography at baseline. We performed multinomial logistic regression analysis, receiver operating curves (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) estimations. Dominance analysis was used to rank emphysema and risk factors in terms of importance. Results A one percent increase in %LAA increases the relative risk (RR) of new desaturation by 10 % (RR 1.1 (95%CI 1.1, 1.2)) and for repeated desaturation by 20 % (RR 1.2 (95%CI 1.1, 1.3)). Compared with other important desaturation risk factors, %LAA ranked as number one in the dominance analysis, accounting for 50 % and 37 % of the predicted variance for new and repeated desaturators, respectively. FEV1% predicted accounted for 9 % and 24 %, and resting SpO2 accounted for 22 % and 21 % for new and repeated desaturation. Conclusion Emphysema increases the risk of developing and repeatedly experiencing EID. Emphysema seems to be a more important risk factor for desaturation than FEV1% predicted and resting saturation.acceptedVersio

    The Svalbard Carboniferous to Cenozoic Composite Tectono-Stratigraphic Element

    The Svalbard Composite Tectono-Stratigraphic Element is located on the north-western corner of the Barents Shelf and comprises a Carboniferous to Pleistocene sedimentary succession. Due to Cenozoic uplift the succession is subaerially exposed in the Svalbard archipelago. The oldest parts of the succession consist of Carboniferous to Permian mixed siliciclastic, carbonate and evaporite and spiculitic sediments that developed during multiple phases of extension. The majority of the Mesozoic succession is composed of siliciclastic deposits formed in sag basins and continental platforms. Episodes of Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous contraction are evident in the eastern part of the archipelago and in nearby offshore areas. Differential uplift related to the opening of the Amerasian Basin and the Cretaceous emplacement of the High Arctic Large Igneous Province created a major hiatus spanning from most of the Late Cretaceous and early Danian throughout the Svalbard Composite Tectono-Stratigraphic Element. The West Spitsbergen Fold and Thrust Belt and the associated foreland basin in central Spitsbergen (Central Tertiary Basin) formed as a response to the Eurekan orogeny and the progressive northward opening of the North Atlantic during the Palaeogene. This event was followed by formation of yet another major hiatus spanning the Oligocene to Pliocene. Multiple reservoir and source rock units are exposed in Svalbard providing analogues to the offshore prolific offshore acreages in southwest Barents Sea and are important for de-risking of plays and prospects. However, the archipelago itself is regarded as high-risk acreage for petroleum exploration. This is due to Palaeogene contraction and late Neogene uplift of particularly the western and central parts. In the east there is an absence of mature source rocks, and the entire region is subjected to strict environmental protection

    Panel-based Assessment of Ecosystem Condition of the North Sea Shelf Ecosystem

    The System for Assessment of Ecological Condition, coordinated by the Norwegian Environment Agency, is intended to form the foundation for evidence-based assessments of the ecological condition of Norwegian terrestrial and marine ecosystems not covered by the EU Water Framework Directive. The reference condition is defined as “intact ecosystems”, i.e., a condition that is largely unimpacted by modern industrial anthropogenic activities. An ecosystem in good ecological condition does not deviate substantially from this reference condition in structure, functions or productivity. This report describes the first operational assessment of the ecological condition of the marine shelf ecosystem in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea and Skagerrak.
