A Front-Line and Cost-Effective Model for the Assessment of Service Life of Network Pipes
[EN] In any water utility, a reliable assessment of the service life of the network pipes is a key piece within the big puzzle of assets management. This paper presents a new statistical model (basic pipes life assessment, BPLA) to assess the service life of pipes, to locate the pipes on the failures bath curve and to forecast the expected failures in future years. Its main novelties are the processing of pipe information (is that information what is adapted to the classical maintenance engineering and not the other way back) and the definition of two different time variables that can be analyzed in parallel. The first novelty makes the model less demanding in terms of data and software tools than others currently available, and the second one allows to get all the results after one single stage of calculation. To show its usability, the BPLA has been applied to a pipe network that supplies water to 500,000 citizens for which two years of failure records are available. Procedures and results have been compared to the well-known Weibull proportional hazard model (WPHM), with final relative errors lower than 10% and 15% on each particular result. The authors would like to thank Global Omnium for the support provided, both directly and through the Catedra Aguas de Valencia of the UPV, for the development of the works presented in this paper.Ramírez-Aguilar, RX.; López Jiménez, PA.; Torres Toro, D.; Cobacho Jordán, R. Spatial modelling of eggs of Thrips (Thysanoptera: Frankliniella occidentalis) in husk tomatoes through geostatistical techniques
Thrips (Thysanoptera: Frankliniella occidentalis)
The husk tomato (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.)
is a staple food crop of great economic
importance in Mexico. However, it is affected
by various pests and diseases, such as Thrips
(Thysanoptera: Frankliniella occidentalis) and the
tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) that can cause
up to 80% of losses. The scope of the present
work was to model the spatial distribution of eggs
of Thrips using geostatistical techniques as well
as to obtain maps of incidence via krigging. In
each of the commercial fields associated to the
localities of Luvianos, Jocotitlan e Ixtlahuaca,
121 sampling points were georeferenced
through the method of transects across three
phenological stages of the crop. The number
of Thrips eggs at each sampling point was
counted. The results showed a contagious
pattern of distribution for the eggs of Thrips,
obtaining thus maps provided of several
centers of aggregation. Both the Gaussian
and spherical models accounted mainly for
the obtained semivariograms of the spatial
distribution. The infestation by eggs of Thrips is
not homogeneously distributed throughout the
study area, allowing us to establish strategies
and control measures in terms of specific sites
of infestation of eggs of Thrips.Fil: Jiménez Carrillo, Rocio de los Angeles.Fil: Ramírez Dávila, José Francisco.Fil: Sánchez Pale, Jesús Ricardo.Fil: Salgado Siclán, Martha Lidya.Fil: Laguna Cerda, Antonio

A laser spectroscopy system with combined absorption, polarization rotation and fluorescence detection to study two photon transitions in atomic rubidium
AbstractThe design and construction of an experimental system for studying two photon spectroscopy processes in atomic rubidium is presented. It is designed to measure absorption and polarization rotation induced by any of the two laser beams and also the visible fluorescence that results from decay of the excited states. Two home-built diode lasers are used to produce the optical fields that later interact with room temperature rubidium atoms. Using counterpropagating beams allows velocity selection of the groups of atoms that interact with both laser beams. The system was tested in the 5 S→5 P3/2→5 Dj ladder energy level configuration of atomic rubidium. Blue fluorescence (420nm) that results from decay of the intermediate 6Pj states is filtered and then measured with a photomultiplier tube. Absorption and fluorescence spectra provide mutually complementary information about the interaction between the rubidium atoms and the two optical fields
A case of round pneumonia due to Enterobacter hormaechei: the need for a standardized diagnosis and treatment approach in adults
Round pneumonia is an unusual radiological manifestation of a bacterial lung infection. We present the case of an elderly male patient who arrived at the emergency room with a productive cough and exertional dyspnea. His chest x-ray and CT showed a round opacity and air bronchograms in the right upper lobe. Taken together, the patient’s symptoms and images strongly suggest a pulmonary infection. Empirical antibiotic therapy with ceftriaxone and clarithromycin was started. The sputum culture was positive for Enterobacter hormaechei and the bacterium was sensitive to levofloxacin; therefore, the antibiotic therapy was changed. Despite the treatment, the patient progressed to respiratory failure and septic shock, dying six days after admission. Although round pneumonia is uncommon, it is a potentially curable disease and clinicians should always consider it in their differential diagnosis
