For about 50 years there has been an armed conflict in Colombia, but recently acknowledged by the government, leaving as a result huge social gaps, economic and devastating consequences and noticeable cultural changes in the national imaginaries of life and development. Terms as belligerency, terrorism, and armed conflict are now part of our lexicon. The pretension for this research is to address the issue of the regulatory treatment given by Colombian legislation to the status of belligerence, terrorism and armed conflict without neglecting of course that in this regard, our regulations have adopted those from the International Law through the Constitutionality cluster.

Dengue is the world’s most important arbovirus. It is transmitted by the bite of females Aedes spp. mosquitoes, which normally become infected by biting a viraemic host. There are, however, numerous studies that have identified vertical transmission as a rare yet important mechanism of vector infection. This study was conducted in order to quantify the occurrence of vertical transmission of dengue virus in Aedes mosquitoes collected by the Secretary of Health in Medellin, Colombia in 2016 (epidemic year) and 2017 (endemic year). Specimens were identified to species and tested for dengue in pools by RT-PCR. A total of 6,708 mosquitoes were collected; 96 % were Ae. aegypti, and 4 % were Ae. Albopictus. 294 of 2,211 pools tested were positive for dengue virus, and 50 of the positive pools were exclusively male mosquitoes. For both epidemic and the endemic years, vertical transmission was detected, though it was more frequent in 2016. Vertical transmission was observed in mosquitoes collected from all sectors of the city, without a distinct spatial pattern. Our results suggest that vertical transmission is a more frequent event with greater epidemiological relevance than previously estimated. Additional studies are required to verify the infectivity of the virus detected in male mosquitoes and to specify the role of vertical transmission in the incidence of dengue virus.

Background and Objectives: During the COVID-19, the demand for non-invasive ventilatory support equipment significantly increased. In response, a novel non-invasive ventilatory support model called CPAP-AirFlife™ was developed utilizing existing technologies. This model offers technological advantages, including an aerosol-controlled helmet suitable for high-risk environments such as ambulances. Additionally, it is cost-effective and does not require medical air, making it accessible for implementation in low-level hospitals, particularly in rural areas. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of CPAP-AirFlife™ by conducting a non-inferiority comparison with conventional ventilation equipment used in the Intensive Care Unit. Materials and Methods: A clinical study was conducted on normal subjects in a randomized and sequential manner. Parameters such as hemoglobin oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry, exhaled PCO2 levels, vital signs, and individual tolerance were compared between the CPAP-AirFlife™ and conventional equipment. The study population was described in terms of demographic characteristics and included in the analysis. Results: It was shown that the CPAP-AirFlife™ was not inferior to conventional equipment in terms of efficacy or tolerability. Hemoglobin oxygen saturation levels, exhaled PCO2 levels, vital signs, and individual tolerance did not significantly differ between the two models. Conclusions: The findings suggest that CPAP-AirFlife™ is a practical and cost-effective alternative for non-invasive ventilatory support. Its technological advantages, including the aerosol-controlled helmet, make it suitable for high-risk environments. The device’s accessibility and affordability make it a promising solution for implementation in low-level hospitals, particularly in rural areas. This study supports using CPAP-AirFlife™ as a practical option for non-invasive ventilatory support, providing a valuable contribution to respiratory care during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond

Annually, the Technological University of Pereira has been carrying out some events in the line of Social Appropriation of Knowledge. This has been done through the research, innovation, and extension Vice Rectory, moreover, these sessions are framed within the institutional objective: “Define and direct the guidelines for the institutional research that strengthen the research groups and the Seedbeds, through the formation of researchers, the development of science, technology, and innovation projects or programs, as well as the generation of networks and strategic partnerships that contribute to the creation and appropriation of knowledge for the society”. Therefore, the 6th Social Appropriation of Knowledge event took place under the title of “The research, Innovation, and Extension at the service of society” which was constituted as an academic and institutional opportunity where the results of the research projects from the last 5 years were published. The results of this event revealed, once again, the high academic level in investigation development at the university. There were 11 articles divided into 6 fields: Health, Engineering, Technology, Education, Industrial Technology, and Art, in which the results obtained by the research projects from the investigation groups were shown, promoting a knowledge exchange from their authors whose intellectual formation is diverse. With this publication, as part of a permanent effort to socialize the knowledge, the university promotes the circulation of its professors, students, and general community voices, having in mind that knowledge must be transferred through different channels, strengthening the academy and society in general, according to the institutional mission that invites us to incentivize a research culture in the university community.Presentation........................................................................................................... 5 Chapter 1.
