Assessing strength and power in resistance training
Maximal Dynamic Strength is usually assessed either by the one repetition maximum test (1-RM) or by a repetition maximum test with submaximal loads, which requires the application of a formula to estimate the value of 1-RM. This value is needed to establish the objective of resistance training: such as maximum strength, endurance strength, and/or explosive strength. However, both 1-RM and submaximal tests are unable to highlight the changes produced on power and velocity. The assembly history of the Galactic inner halo inferred from alpha-patterns
We explore the origin of the observed decline in [O/Fe] (and [Mg/Fe]) with
Galactocentric distance for high-metallicity stars ([Fe/H] > -1.1), based on a
sample of halo stars selected within the Apache Point Observatory Galactic
Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) fourteenth data release (DR14). We also analyse
the characteristics of the [/Fe] distributions in the inner-halo
regions inferred from two zoom-in Milky Way mass-sized galaxies that are taken
as case studies. One of them qualitatively reproduces the observed trend to
have higher fraction of -rich star for decreasing galactocentric
distance; the other exhibits the opposite trend. We find that stars with [Fe/H]
> -1.1 located in the range [15 - 30] kpc are consistent with formation in two
starbursts, with maxima separated by about ~ 1 Gyr. We explore the
contributions of stellar populations with different origin to the [/Fe]
gradients detected in stars with [Fe/H] > -1.1. Our analysis reveals that the
simulated halo that best matches the observed chemical trends is characterised
by an accretion history involving low to intermediate-mass satellite galaxies
with a short and intense burst of star formation, and contributions from a more
massive satellite with dynamical masses about ~ 10M,

An equatorial ultra iron-poor star identified in BOSS
We report the discovery of SDSS J131326.89-001941.4, an ultra iron-poor red
giant star ([Fe/H] ~ -4.3) with a very high carbon abundance ([C/Fe]~ +2.5).
This object is the fifth star in this rare class, and the combination of a
fairly low effective temperature (Teff ~ 5300 K), which enhances line
absorption, with its brightness (g=16.9), makes it possible to measure the
abundances of calcium, carbon and iron using a low-resolution spectrum from the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We examine the carbon and iron abundance ratios in
this star and other similar objects in the light of predicted yields from
metal-free massive stars, and conclude that they are consistent. By way of
comparison, stars with similarly low iron abundances but lower carbon-to-iron

Natural history of a visceral leishmaniasis outbreak in highland Ethiopia
In May 2005, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was recognized for the first time in Libo Kemken, Ethiopia, a highland region where only few cases had been reported before. We analyzed records of VL patients treated from May 25, 2005 to December 13, 2007 by the only VL treatment center in the area, maintained by Médecins Sans Frontières-Ethiopia, Operational Center Barcelona-Athens. The median age was 18 years; 77.6% were male. The overall case fatality rate was 4%, but adults 45 years or older were five times as likely to die as 5-29 year olds. Other factors associated with increased mortality included HIV infection, edema, severe malnutrition, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and vomiting. The VL epidemic expanded rapidly over a several-year period, culminating in an epidemic peak in the last third of 2005, spread over two districts, and transformed into a sustained endemic situation by 2007
Deep SDSS optical spectroscopy of distant halo stars I. Atmospheric parameters and stellar metallicity distribution
We analyze a sample of tens of thousands of spectra of halo turnoff stars,
obtained with the optical spectrographs of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS),
to characterize the stellar halo population "in situ" out to a distance of a
few tens of kpc from the Sun. In this paper we describe the derivation of
atmospheric parameters. We also derive the overall stellar metallicity
distribution based on F-type stars observed as flux calibrators for the
Baryonic Oscillations Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). Our analysis is based on an
automated method that determines the set of parameters of a model atmosphere
that reproduces each observed spectrum best. We used an optimization algorithm
and evaluate model fluxes by means of interpolation in a precomputed grid. In
our analysis, we account for the spectrograph's varying resolution as a
function of fiber and wavelength. Our results for early SDSS (pre-BOSS upgrade)
data compare well with those from the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP),
except for stars with logg (cgs units) lower than 2.5. An analysis of stars in
the globular cluster M13 reveals a dependence of the inferred metallicity on
surface gravity for stars with logg < 2.5, confirming the systematics
identified in the comparison with the SSPP. We find that our metallicity
estimates are significantly more precise than the SSPP results. We obtain a
halo metallicity distribution that is narrower and more asymmetric than in
previous studies. The lowest gravity stars in our sample, at tens of kpc from
the Sun, indicate a shift of the metallicity distribution to lower abundances,

Deep SDSS optical spectroscopy of distant halo stars II. Iron, calcium, and magnesium abundances
We analyze a sample of 3,944 low-resolution (R ~ 2000) optical spectra from
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), focusing on stars with effective
temperatures 5800 < Teff < 6300 K, and distances from the Milky Way plane in
excess of 5 kpc, and determine their abundances of Fe, Ca, and Mg. We followed
the same methodology as in the previous paper in this series, deriving
atmospheric parameters by chi2 minimization, but this time we obtained the
abundances of individual elements by fitting their associated spectral lines.
Distances were calculated from absolute magnitudes obtained by a statistical
comparison of our stellar parameters with stellar-evolution models. The
observations reveal a decrease in the abundances of iron, calcium, and
magnesium at large distances from the Galactic center. The median abundances
for the halo stars analyzed are fairly constant up to a Galactocentric distance
r ~ 20 kpc, rapidly decrease between r ~ 20 and r ~ 40 kpc, and flatten out to
significantly lower values at larger distances, consistent with previous
studies. In addition, we examine the [Ca/Fe] and [Mg/Fe] as a function of Fe/H
and Galactocentric distance. Our results show that the most distant parts of
the halo show a steeper variation of the [Ca/Fe] and [Mg/Fe] with iron. We
found that at the range -1.6 < [Fe/H] < -0.4 [Ca/Fe] decreases with distance,
in agreement with earlier results based on local stars. However, the opposite
trend is apparent for [Mg/Fe]. Our conclusion that the outer regions of the
halo are more metal-poor than the inner regions, based on in situ observations
of distant stars, agrees with recent results based on inferences from the
kinematics of more local stars, and with predictions of recent galaxy formation
simulations for galaxies similar to the Milky Way
Risk factors of visceral leishmaniasis in East Africa: a case-control study in Pokot territory of Kenya and Uganda
BACKGROUND: In East Africa, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in parts of Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Uganda. It is caused by Leishmania donovani and transmitted by the sandfly vector Phlebotomus martini. In the Pokot focus, reaching from western Kenya into eastern Uganda, formulation of a prevention strategy has been hindered by the lack of knowledge on VL risk factors as well as by lack of support from health sector donors. The present study was conducted to establish the necessary evidence-base and to stimulate interest in supporting the control of this neglected tropical disease in Uganda and Kenya. METHODS: A case-control study was carried out from June to December 2006. Cases were recruited at Amudat hospital, Nakapiripirit district, Uganda, after clinical and parasitological confirmation of symptomatic VL infection. Controls were individuals that tested negative using a rK39 antigen-based dipstick, which were recruited at random from the same communities as the cases. Data were analysed using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Ninety-three cases and 226 controls were recruited into the study. Multivariate analysis identified low socio-economic status and treating livestock with insecticide as risk factors for VL. Sleeping near animals, owning a mosquito net and knowing about VL symptoms were associated with a reduced risk of VL. CONCLUSIONS: VL affects the poorest of the poor of the Pokot tribe. Distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets combined with dissemination of culturally appropriate behaviour-change education is likely to be an effective prevention strategy
APOGEE Chemical Abundances of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy
The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) provides
the opportunity to measure elemental abundances for C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P,
K, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni in vast numbers of stars. We analyze the
chemical abundance patterns of these elements for 158 red giant stars belonging
to the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr). This is the largest sample of Sgr stars
with detailed chemical abundances and the first time C, N, P, K, V, Cr, Co, and
Ni have been studied at high-resolution in this galaxy. We find that the Sgr
stars with [Fe/H] -0.8 are deficient in all elemental abundance
ratios (expressed as [X/Fe]) relative to the Milky Way, suggesting that Sgr
stars observed today were formed from gas that was less enriched by Type II SNe
than stars formed in the Milky Way. By examining the relative deficiencies of
the hydrostatic (O, Na, Mg, and Al) and explosive (Si, P, K, and Mn) elements,
our analysis supports the argument that previous generations of Sgr stars were
formed with a top-light IMF, one lacking the most massive stars that would
normally pollute the ISM with the hydrostatic elements. We use a simple
chemical evolution model, flexCE to further backup our claim and conclude that
recent stellar generations of Fornax and the LMC could also have formed

Validation of Two Rapid Diagnostic Tests for Visceral Leishmaniasis in Kenya
BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a systemic parasitic disease that is fatal unless treated. In Kenya, national VL guidelines rely on microscopic examination of spleen aspirate to confirm diagnosis. As this procedure is invasive, it cannot be safely implemented in peripheral health structures, where non-invasive, accurate, easy to use diagnostic tests are needed. METHODOLOGY: We evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of two rapid diagnostic tests (RDT), DiaMed IT LEISH and Signal-KA, among consecutive patients with clinical suspicion of VL in two treatment centres located in Baringo and North Pokot District, Rift Valley province, Kenya. Microscopic examination of spleen aspirate was the reference diagnostic standard. Patients were prospectively recruited between May 2010 and July 2011. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Of 251 eligible patients, 219 patients were analyzed, including 131 VL and 88 non-VL patients. The median age of VL patients was 16 years with predominance of males (66%). None of the tested VL patients were co-infected with HIV. Sensitivity and specificity of the DiaMed IT LEISH were 89.3% (95%CI: 82.7-94%) and 89.8% (95%CI: 81.5-95.2%), respectively. The Signal KA showed trends towards lower sensitivity (77.1%; 95%CI: 68.9-84%) and higher specificity (95.5%; 95%CI: 88.7-98.7%). Combining the tests did not improve the overall diagnostic performance, as all patients with a positive Signal KA were also positive with the DiaMed IT LEISH. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The DiaMed IT LEISH can be used to diagnose VL in Kenyan peripheral health facilities where microscopic examination of spleen aspirate or sophisticated serological techniques are not feasible. There is a crucial need for an improved RDT for VL diagnosis in East Africa
