    MAPPING THE NEXT GENERATION'S IMAGINATION: BALKAN WARS AND THE TURKISH NATIONALISM

    Characterized by voluntaristic nationality in terms of citizenry concept, Ottomanismas a political ideology lost gradually its credit due to the political developments 146 inthe post-1908 Revolution period. Especially the loss of Rumeli with the Balkan Wars and with the Muslim immigration from there, the multi-ethnic composition ofthe Empire was relatively disappeared. It was commonly accepted that the Balkan wars was a turning point in Turkish nationalism, which was "materialized as apolitical ideology" 147 and was recognized as an official policy by the Unionists, who came to power with a coup d'etat in 1913. Before the Balkan Wars, Turkism was appeared as an expression of Ottoman intellectual's identity searching in terms of both the reinvention of ethnic history and a defense mechanism against the Western expansion.148 The disappointment experienced in Ottomanism transformed Turkist movement, which had been a reactionary cultural movement, into an officially accepted ideology and to some extends it "became synonymous with the Pan-Turkism" 149, which aimed the political unification of all Turkic peoples. Eventhough the approaches on the scope of official Turkism-from cultural Turkists to Pan-Turkists- was variable, one should realize that Turkism in general wase valuated in this era a compensation way for the crushing defeat in the Balkan Wars

    Additional Notes on Delphacidae, Tettigometridae and Cixidae [Auchenorrhyncha (Insecta: Hemiptera)] Fauna in East and Southeast Anatolia Region of Turkey

    This study was carried out to contribute the Delphacidae, Tettigometridae and Cixiidae (Hemiptera) fauna in the East and Southeast Anatolia Region of Turkey. Specimens were collected from different locations of the study area, in 2007, 2008, 2014 and 2015, and prepared according to standard methods. 7 species belonging to 6 genera from 3 families were determined: Hyalesthes obsoletus, Pentastiridius leporinus, Laodelphax striatellus, Sogatella vibix, Toya propinqua, Tettigometra atra and Tettigometra macrocephala. Number of examined specimens, host plants and distribution of species in Turkey have been given. In these species; P. leporinus, L. striatellus T. atra, T. macrocephala were new records in these regions

    Measurement of spin-dependent conductivities in a two-dimensional electron gas

    Spin accumulation is generated by injecting an unpolarized charge current into a channel of GaAs two-dimensional electron gas subject to an in-plane magnetic field, then measured in a non-local geometry. Unlike previous measurements that have used spin-polarized nanostructures, here the spin accumulation arises simply from the difference in bulk conductivities for spin-up and spin-down carriers. Comparison to a diffusive model that includes spin subband splitting in magnetic field suggests a significantly enhanced electron spin susceptibility in the 2D electron gas

    Chirality blockade of Andreev reflection in a magnetic Weyl semimetal

    A Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has a minimum of two species of Weyl fermions, distinguished by their opposite chirality, in a pair of Weyl cones at opposite momenta ±K\pm K that are displaced in the direction of the magnetization. Andreev reflection at the interface between a Weyl semimetal in the normal state (N) and a superconductor (S) that pairs ±K\pm K must involve a switch of chirality, otherwise it is blocked. We show that this "chirality blockade" suppresses the superconducting proximity effect when the magnetization lies in the plane of the NS interface. A Zeeman field at the interface can provide the necessary chirality switch and activate Andreev reflection.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures.     Investigation of Reynolds Stresses in a 3D Idealized Urban Area Using Large Eddy Simulation

    High resolution, large eddy simulation (LES) of neutral flow through an array of cubes has been conducted with periodic boundary conditions in lateral and longitudinal directions. In this paper, we first describe the model formulation and validate the simulation by comparing the mean flow and turbulence statistics with wind-tunnel experimental data from a cube array of buildings. The LES model is then used to investigate the physical mechanisms that lead to the low turbulent stresses that have been reported in the lower half of the urban canopy layer. To do this, the urban boundary layer is conceptually broken down into three distinct regions: (a) the urban roughness sub-layer, (b) street channels (roads with axis aligned with mean wind direction aloft) and (c) street canyons (roads with axis normal to the mean wind direction aloft). The distribution of the Reynolds stresses differ significantly amongst these regions and we hypothesize that the low stresses in the lower half of the canopy can been attributed to the temporary unstable of the above mentioned regions at different periods of time. In a complex urban area, these regions can be observed intermittently at the same physical location, thus, stresses with opposite signs have the potential to cancel each other and on average yield a low magnitude. In this paper, mean turbulence statistics and spectra from high resolution LES have been analyzed for these scenarios and the results have been interpreted within the context of the proposed idealized flow regions

    PTPN22 gene polymorphism in Takayasu's arteritis

    Objective. Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a chronic, rare granulomatous panarteritis of unknown aetiology involving mainly the aorta and its major branches. In this study, genetic susceptibility to TA has been investigated by screening the functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of PTPN22 gene encoding the lymphoid-specific protein tyrosine phosphatase. Methods. Totally, 181 patients with TA and 177 healthy controls are genotyped by PCR-RFLP method for the SNP rs2476601 (A/G) of PTPN22 gene. Polymorphic region was amplified by PCR and digested with Xcm I enzyme. Results. Detected frequencies of heterozygous genotype (AG) were 5.1% (9/177) in control group and 3.8% (7/181) in TA group (P = 0.61, odds ratio: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.3, 2.0). No association with angiographic type, vascular involvement or prognosis of TA was observed either. Conclusion. The distribution of PTPN22 polymorphism did not reveal any association with TA in Turkey. © The Author 2008. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the British Society for Rheumatology.
