    The oxidation and magnetic properties of MP recording media particles

    MP recording media pigments have been subjected to elevated temperatures of 180(C in air at various rates of heating from room temperature. It has been found that the rate of heating of these particles determines the final oxide which the particles form. Analysis of the switching field distribution (SFD) of such particles before and after oxidation shows a broadening of the SFD to lower switching fields. A comparative analysis with X-ray spectra performed on the oxidized particles indicates that particles with lower values of coercivity have been oxidized preferentially

    Residual stress characterization of single and triple-pass autogenously welded stainless steel pipes

    Using neutron diffraction the components of the residual stress field have been determined in the region near a mid-length groove in two identical austenitic stainless pipes in which weld beads had been laid down. One pipe sample had a single pass, and the second a triple pass, autogenous weld deposited around the groove circumference. The results show the effect on the stress field of the additional weld deposited and are compared to the results of Finite Element Modelling. The hoop stress component is found to be generally tensile, and greater in the triple pass weldment than in the single pass weldment. The hoop stresses reach peak values of around 400 MPa in tension. X-ray measurements of the residual stress components on the near inner surface of the pipe weldments are also presented, and show tensile stresses in both pipes, with a higher magnitude in the three-pass weldment

    Friction and lubrication effects in the machining of aluminium alloys

    Friction between the rake face of a cutting tool and the freshly formed chip surface plays a vital role in influencing both the ease of cutting and the quality of the resultant machined surface. The existence of clean metallic surfaces together with the high local hydrostatic stresses favour the formation of strong adhesion between the cutting tool or insert and the machined component. These adhesive bonds can lead to poor surface integrity although their extent can be limited by the provision of a suitable machining lubricant. In an effort to identify the essential lubricating aspects of fluid activity, as opposed to any role as a coolant, experiments have been carried out involving the orthogonal machining of precipitation‐hardened aluminium alloys, principally Al 2014, in controlled, low‐pressure gas environments in which the feed (i.e., the depth of cut) speed and temperature have been varied while using a variety of tool materials and lubricating species. The results indicate that there can be unexpectedly subtle, but significant, interactions between the metallurgy of the workpiece, the nature of the surface of the tool and the surrounding environment. These are not wholly consistent with conventional theories of vapour phase lubrication in which transport of the lubricant has been assumed to control the effectiveness of the lubricating agent. The implications of these observations for the complex tribological system constituted by the combination of workpiece, tool surface and local environment are discussed

    Neutron diffraction residual stress measurements on girth-welded 304 stainless steel pipes with weld metal deposited up to half and full pipe wall thickness

    The residual stress distribution has been measured in two girth-welded austenitic stainless steel pipe weldments using time-of-flight neutron diffraction. One had weld filler metal deposited up to half the pipe wall thickness, and one had weld metal deposited up to full pipe wall thickness. The aim of the work is to evaluate the evolution in residual stress profile on filling the weld, on which there is little experimental data, and where the selection of the correct hardening model used in finite element modelling can benefit greatly from an understanding of the intermediate residual stresses partway through the welding operation. The measured residual stresses are compared with those calculated by finite element modelling and measured using X-ray diffraction. The results show a change in the measured hoop stress at the weld toe from tension to compression between the half-and fully-filled weld. The finite element results show an overprediction of the residual stress, which may be a consequence of the simple isotropic hardening model applied. The results have implications for the likely occurrence of stress corrosion cracking in this important type of pipe-to-pipe weldment

    Towards a population of HMXB/NS microquasars as counterparts of low-latitude unidentified EGRET sources

    The discovery of the microquasar LS 5039 well within the 95% conficence contour of the Unidentified EGRET Source (UES) 3EG J1824-1514 was a major step towards the possible association between microquasars (MQs) and UESs. The recent discovery of precessing relativistic radio jets in LS I +61 303, a source associated for long time with 2CG 135+01 and with the UES 3EG J0241+6103, has given further support to this idea. Finally, the very recently proposed association between the microquasar candidate AX J1639.0-4642 and the UES 3EG J1639-4702 points towards a population of High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB)/Neutron Star (NS) microquasars as counterparts of low-latitude unidentified EGRET sources.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures.     Dabrafenib plus trametinib in patients with relapsed/refractory BRAF V600E mutation–positive hairy cell leukemia

    BRAF V600E is the key oncogenic driver mutation in hairy cell leukemia (HCL). We report the efficacy and safety of dabrafenib plus trametinib in patients with relapsed/refractory BRAF V600E mutation–positive HCL. This open-label, phase 2 study enrolled patients with BRAF V600E mutation–positive HCL refractory to first-line treatment with a purine analog or relapsed after ≄2 prior lines of treatment. Patients received dabrafenib 150 mg twice daily plus trametinib 2 mg once daily until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or death. The primary endpoint was investigator-assessed objective response rate (ORR) per criteria adapted from National Comprehensive Cancer Network-Consensus Resolution guidelines. Secondary endpoints included duration of response (DOR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and safety. Fifty-five patients with BRAF V600E mutation–positive HCL were enrolled. The investigator-assessed ORR was 89.0% (95% confidence interval, 77.8%-95.9%); 65.5% of patients had a complete response (without minimal residual disease [MRD]: 9.1% [negative immunohistochemistry of bone marrow {BM} biopsy], 12.7% [negative BM aspirate flow cytometry {FC}], 16.4% [negative immunohistochemistry and/or FC results]; with MRD, 49.1%), and 23.6% had a partial response. The 24-month DOR was 97.7% with 24-month PFS and OS rates of 94.4% and 94.5%, respectively. The most common treatment-related adverse events were pyrexia (58.2%), chills (47.3%), and hyperglycemia (40.0%). Dabrafenib plus trametinib demonstrated durable responses with a manageable safety profile consistent with previous observations in other indications and should be considered as a rituximab-free therapeutic option for patients with relapsed/refractory BRAF V600E mutation–positive HCL.     Supermassive Binaries and Extragalactic Jets

    Some quasars show Doppler shifted broad emission line peaks. I give new statistics of the occurrence of these peaks and show that, while the most spectacular cases are in quasars with strong radio jets inclined to the line of sight, they are also almost as common in radio-quiet quasars. Theories of the origin of the peaks are reviewed and it is argued that the displaced peaks are most likely produced by the supermassive binary model. The separations of the peaks in the 3C 390.3-type objects are consistent with orientation-dependent "unified models" of quasar activity.     CO2 hydrogenation to methanol on intermetallic PdGa and PdIn catalysts and the effect of Zn co-deposition

    The behaviour of Pd deposited on Ga2O3 and In2O3 by CVI is compared for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. Ga2O3 alone is inactive, but In2O3 has good conversion, and selectivity as high as 89 % to CH3OH. The addition of Pd to the catalysts had relatively little effect for In2O3, but in contrast, the addition of Pd to Ga2O3, has a very big effect, inducing high activity and selectivity to methanol. Both oxides form Pd intermetallics - Pd2In3 and Pd2Ga. However, for the In catalysts there is also a thick (∌3 nm) overlayer of the oxide, while for the Ga catalyst there was no such overlayer. Hence this is why addition of Pd to the Indium catalysts has relatively little effect on performance compared with Ga. Furthermore, the effect of Pd and Zn co-deposition on Ga₂O₃ and In₂O₃ was investigated, as well as the effect of the support morphology. Upon co-deposition of Pd and Zn, and after reduction, the Pd2In3 catalyst remains phase stable, whereas the Pd2Ga alloy is replaced by PdZn, and is improved in methanol yield
