    The Effects of Faith-Based Therapy Versus Secular Therapy on Substance Abuse Treatment

    Substance abuse can affect anyone. The consequences are significant and may lead to death. Substance abuse also puts a great financial burden on the healthcare system. The purpose of this review of literature was to investigate the effect of faith-based therapy compared to secular therapy on substance abuse treatment. The data sources used were: PsychINFO, CINAHL, and OneSearch. Results showed multiple factors of faith-based therapy such as: cultural pressure, fear of judgment, and social support may correlate with recovery. A positive correlation was found between faith-based therapy and substance abuse recovery when compared with secular therapy (Al-Omari, Hamed, & Abu Tariah, 2015; Avants, Beitel, & Margolin, 2005; Bowen et al., 2006; Chu, Hung-En Sung, & Hsiao, 2012; Pardini, Plante, Sherman, & Stump, 2000; Sung & Chu, 2013). However, most research focuses more on the effectiveness of faith-based therapy than on the effectiveness of secular therapy

    The Oxidation State of Sulfur in Lunar Apatite

    Lunar apatites contain hundreds to thousands of parts per million of sulfur. This is puzzling because lunar basalts are thought to form in low oxygen fugacity (f(sub O2)) conditions where sulfur can only exist in its reduced form (S2()), a substitution not previously observed in natural apatite. We present measurements of the oxidation state of S in lunar apatites and associated mesostasis glass that show that lunar apatites and glass contain dominantly S2(), whereas natural apatites from Earth are only known to contain S6+. It is likely that many terrestrial and martian igneous rocks contain apatites with mixed sulfur oxidation states. The S6(+)/S2() ratios of such apatites could be used to quantify the f(sub O2) values at which they crystallized, given information on the portioning of S6(+) and S2() between apatite and melt and on the S6(+)/S2() ratios of melts as functions of f(sub O2) and melt composition. Such a well-calibrated oxybarometer based on this the oxidation state of S in apatite would have wide application

    The Asymmetric Thick Disk: A Star Count and Kinematic Analysis. II The Kinematics

    We report a kinematic signature associated with the observed asymmetry in the distribution of thick disk/inner halo stars interior to the Solar circle described in Paper I. In that paper we found a statistically significant excess (20% to 25 %) of stars in quadrant I (l ~ 20 deg to 55 deg) both above and below the plane (b ~ +/- 25 deg to +/- 45 deg) compared to the complementary region in quadrant IV. We have measured Doppler velocities for 741 stars, selected according to the same magnitude and color criteria, in the direction of the asymmetry and in the corresponding fields in quadrant IV. We have also determined spectral types and metallicities measured from the same spectra. We not only find an asymmetric distribution in the V_LSR velocities for the stars in the two regions, but the angular rate of rotation, w, for the stars in quadrant I reveals a slower effective rotation rate compared to the corresponding quadrant IV stars. We use our [Fe/H] measurements to separate the stars into the three primary population groups, halo, thick disk, and disk, and conclude that it is primarily the thick disk stars that show the slower rotation in quadrant I. A solution for the radial, tangential and vertical components of the V_LSR velocities, reveals a significant lag of ~ 80 to 90 km/s in the direction of Galactic rotation for the thick disk stars in quadrant I, while in quadrant IV, the same population has only a ~ 20 km/s lag. The results reported here support a rotational lag among the thick disk stars due to a gravitational interaction with the bar as the most likely explanation for the asymmetry in both the star counts and the kinematics. The affected thick disk stars, however, may be associated with the recently discovered Canis Major debris stream or a similar merger event (abridged).Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa

The characters and themes in Faulkner’s stories integrate with the seemingly disconnected adjacent content, thus working toward the magazines’ ultimate goals of seduction. This study contends that an analysis of these integrations—of Faulkner’s short stories and their neighboring content—within both 1957 issues of The Dude and The Gent, reveals the ways in which Faulkner’s fiction has been programmed for seduction.Gearing Up For War: Faulkner\u27s Two Soldiers and The Saturday Evening Post / Jennifer Nolan-Stinson“Two Soldiers,” Faulkner’s story about a young boy’s reaction to his brother’s decision to enlist after Pearl Harbor, appeared as the lead item in the March 28, 1942 issue of The Saturday Evening Post during a period of editorial upheaval and increasingly war-oriented coverage. Looking beyond the text, the advertisements, articles, and even the poetry bombard the reader with evidence of and calls for service. In this context, “Two Soldiers” provides a rare and much-needed expression of Americans’ complex and conflicted feelings about having recently entered the war, which challenges scholarly oversimplifications of the story as unequivocally patriotic or mere pandering.     Anticarbamylated protein antibodies are associated with long-term disability and increased disease activity in patients with early inflammatory arthritis:Results from the Norfolk Arthritis Register

    Objectives: Anticarbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies are a novel family of autoantibodies recently identified in patients with inflammatory arthritis. The aim of this study was to investigate their association with long-term outcomes of disability and disease activity over 20 years’ follow-up in a cohort of patients with inflammatory polyarthritis (IP).  Methods: Norfolk Arthritis Register recruited adults with recent-onset swelling of ≄2 joints for ≄4 weeks from 1990 to 2009. At baseline, Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and 28 joint disease activity scores (DAS28) were obtained, and C reactive protein, rheumatoid factor (RF), anticitrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) and anti-CarP antibodies were measured. Further HAQ scores and DAS28 were obtained at regular intervals over 20 years. Generalised estimating equations were used to test the association between anti-CarP antibody status and longitudinal HAQ and DAS28 scores; adjusting for age, gender, smoking status, year of inclusion and ACPA status. Analyses were repeated in subgroups stratified by ACPA status. The relative association of RF, ACPA and anti-CarP antibodies with HAQ and DAS28 scores was investigated using a random effects model.  Results: 1995 patients were included; 1310 (66%) were female. Anti-CarP antibodies were significantly associated with more disability and higher disease activity, HAQ multivariate ÎČ-coefficient (95% CI) 0.12 (0.02 to 0.21), and these associations remained significant in the ACPA-negative subgroups. The associations of RF, ACPA and anti-CarP antibodies were found to be additive in the random effects model.  Conclusions: Anti-CarP antibodies are associated with increased disability and higher disease activity in patients with IP. Our results suggest that measurement of anti-CarP antibodies may be useful in identifying ACPA-negative patients with worse long-term outcomes. Further, anti-CarP antibody status provided additional information about RF and ACPA

    Cation and buffer specific effects on the DNA-lipid interaction

    Knowledge of DNA - lipid layer interactions is key for the development of biosensors, synthetic nanopores, scaffolds, and gene-delivery systems. These interactions are strongly affected by the ionic composition of the solvent. We have combined quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and ellipsometry measurements to reveal how pH, buffers and alkali metal chloride salts affect the interaction of DNA with lipid bilayers (DOTAP/DOPC 30:70 in moles). We found that the thickness of the DNA layer adsorbed onto the lipid bilayer decreased in the order citrate > phosphate > Tris > HEPES. The effect of cations on the thickness of the DNA layer decreased in the order (K+ > Na+ > Cs+ ∌ Li+). Rationalization of the experimental results requires that adsorption, due to cation specific charge screening, is driven by the simultaneous action of two mechanisms namely, the law of matching water affinities for kosmotropes (Li+) and ion dispersion forces for chaotropes (Cs+). The outcome of these two opposing mechanisms is a “bell-shaped” specific cations sequence. Moreover, a superimposed buffer specificity, which goes beyond the simple effect of pH regulation, further modulated cation specificity. In summary, DNA-lipid bilayer interactions are maximized if citrate buffer (50 mM, pH 7.4) and KCl (100 mM) are used
