High efficiency thermionic converter studies
Research in thermionic energy conversion technology is reported. The objectives were to produce converters suitable for use in out of core space reactors, radioisotope generators, and solar satellites. The development of emitter electrodes that operate at low cesium pressure, stable low work function collector electrodes, and more efficient means of space charge neutralization were investigated to improve thermionic converter performance. Potential improvements in collector properties were noted with evaporated thin film barium oxide coatings. Experiments with cesium carbonate suggest this substance may provide optimum combinations of cesium and oxygen for thermionic conversion
A Microscopic T-Violating Optical Potential: Implications for Neutron-Transmission Experiments
We derive a T-violating P-conserving optical potential for neutron-nucleus
scattering, starting from a uniquely determined two-body -exchange
interaction with the same symmetry. We then obtain limits on the T-violating
-nucleon coupling from neutron-transmission
experiments in Ho. The limits may soon compete with those from

Solid deuterium surface degradation at ultracold neutron sources
Solid deuterium (sD_2) is used as an efficient converter to produce ultracold
neutrons (UCN). It is known that the sD_2 must be sufficiently cold, of high
purity and mostly in its ortho-state in order to guarantee long lifetimes of
UCN in the solid from which they are extracted into vacuum. Also the UCN
transparency of the bulk sD_2 material must be high because crystal
inhomogeneities limit the mean free path for elastic scattering and reduce the
extraction efficiency. Observations at the UCN sources at Paul Scherrer
Institute and at Los Alamos National Laboratory consistently show a decrease of
the UCN yield with time of operation after initial preparation or later
treatment (`conditioning') of the sD_2. We show that, in addition to the
quality of the bulk sD_2, the quality of its surface is essential. Our
observations and simulations support the view that the surface is deteriorating
due to a build-up of D_2 frost-layers under pulsed operation which leads to
strong albedo reflections of UCN and subsequent loss. We report results of UCN
yield measurements, temperature and pressure behavior of deuterium during
source operation and conditioning, and UCN transport simulations. This,
together with optical observations of sD_2 frost formation on initially
transparent sD_2 in offline studies with pulsed heat input at the North
Carolina State University UCN source results in a consistent description of the

Annotating Relationships between Multiple Mixed-media Digital Objects by Extending Annotea
Annotea provides an annotation protocol to support collaborative Semantic Web-based annotation of digital resources accessible through the Web. It provides a model whereby a user may attach supplementary information to a resource or part of a resource in the form of: either a simple textual comment; a hyperlink to another web page; a local file; or a semantic tag extracted from a formal ontology and controlled vocabulary. Hence, annotations can be used to attach subjective notes, comments, rankings, queries or tags to enable semantic reasoning across web resources. More recently tabbed Browsers and specific annotation tools, allow users to view several resources (e.g., images, video, audio, text, HTML, PDF) simultaneously in order to carry out side-by-side comparisons. In such scenarios, users frequently want to be able to create and annotate a link or relationship between two or more objects or between segments within those objects. For example, a user might want to create a link between a scene in an original film and the corresponding scene in a remake and attach an annotation to that link. Based on past experiences gained from implementing Annotea within different communities in order to enable knowledge capture, this paper describes and compares alternative ways in which the Annotea Schema may be extended for the purpose of annotating links between multiple resources (or segments of resources). It concludes by identifying and recommending an optimum approach which will enhance the power, flexibility and applicability of Annotea in many domains
Threshold electronic structure at the oxygen K edge of 3d transition metal oxides: a configuration interaction approach
It has been generally accepted that the threshold structure observed in the
oxygen K edge X-ray absorption spectrum in 3d transition metal oxides
represents the electronic structure of the 3d transition metal. There is,
however, no consensus about the correct description. We present an
interpretation, which includes both ground state hybridization and electron
correlation. It is based on a configuration interaction cluster calculation
using a MO6 cluster. The oxygen K edge spectrum is calculated by annihilating a
ligand hole in the ground state and is compared to calculations representing
inverse photoemission experiments in which a 3d transition metal electron is
added. Clear differences are observed related to the amount of ligand hole
created in the ground state. Two "rules" connected to this are discussed.
Comparison with experimental data of some early transition metal compounds is
made and shows that this simple cluster approach explains the experimental
