    In an Ising model with spin-exchange dynamics damage always spreads

    We investigate the spreading of damage in Ising models with Kawasaki spin-exchange dynamics which conserves the magnetization. We first modify a recent master equation approach to account for dynamic rules involving more than a single site. We then derive an effective-field theory for damage spreading in Ising models with Kawasaki spin-exchange dynamics and solve it for a two-dimensional model on a honeycomb lattice. In contrast to the cases of Glauber or heat-bath dynamics, we find that the damage always spreads and never heals. In the long-time limit the average Hamming distance approaches that of two uncorrelated systems.     Automated discovery of interpretable hyperelastic material models for human brain tissue with EUCLID

    We propose an automated computational algorithm for simultaneous model selection and parameter identification for the hyperelastic mechanical characterization of human brain tissue. Following the motive of the recently proposed computational framework EUCLID (Efficient Unsupervised Constitutive Law Identitication and Discovery) and in contrast to conventional parameter calibration methods, we construct an extensive set of candidate hyperelastic models, i.e., a model library including popular models known from the literature, and develop a computational strategy for automatically selecting a model from the library that conforms to the available experimental data while being represented as an interpretable symbolic mathematical expression. This computational strategy comprises sparse regression, i.e., a regression problem that is regularized by a sparsity promoting penalty term that filters out irrelevant models from the model library, and a clustering method for grouping together highly correlated and thus redundant features in the model library. The model selection procedure is driven by labelled data pairs stemming from mechanical tests under different deformation modes, i.e., uniaxial compression/tension and simple torsion, and can thus be interpreted as a supervised counterpart to the originally proposed EUCLID that is informed by full-field displacement data and global reaction forces. The proposed method is verified on synthetical data with artificial noise and validated on experimental data acquired through mechanical tests of human brain specimens, proving that the method is capable of discovering hyperelastic models that exhibit both high fitting accuracy to the data as well as concise and thus interpretable mathematical representations

    Exact stationary state for a deterministic high speed traffic model with open boundaries

    An exact solution for a high speed deterministic traffic model with open boundaries and synchronous update rule is presented. Because of the strong correlations in the model, the qualitative structure of the stationary state can be described for general values of the maximum speed. It is shown in the case of vmax=2v_{\rm max}=2 that a detailed analysis of this structure leads to an exact solution. Explicit expressions for the stationary state probabilities are given in terms of products of 24Ă—2424\times 24 matrices.     We discuss a one-dimensional model of a fluctuating interface with a dynamic exponent z=1z=1. The events that occur are adsorption, which is local, and desorption which is non-local and may take place over regions of the order of the system size. In the thermodynamic limit, the time dependence of the system is given by characters of the c=0c=0 conformal field theory of percolation. This implies in a rigorous way a connection between CFT and stochastic processes. The finite-size scaling behavior of the average height, interface width and other observables are obtained.     Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) for Monitoring Sobriety in Liver Transplant Candidates: Preliminary Results of Differences Between Alcohol-Related and Non-Alcohol-Related Cirrhosis Candidates.

    BACKGROUND Monitoring sobriety is mandatory for liver transplant (LT) candidates with alcohol-related cirrhosis in Germany. Prior to listing, abstinence of 6 months is required. However, little is known about biomarker performance in alcohol-related cirrhosis. Routine testing of ethyl glucuronide in urine (uEtG) or hair (hEtG) is prone to manipulation or is unfeasible in anuria. Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in dried-blood spots is a promising alternative. We compared PEth with routine parameters and self-reports in alcohol-related and non-alcohol-related cirrhosis at our transplant center. MATERIAL AND METHODS All patients received self-report questionnaires (AUDIT & TLFB). Blood, urine and hair samples, as well as PEth dried-blood spots were drawn at baseline. In addition, survival analyses were conducted. RESULTS Out of 66 patients, 53 were listed for LT and 13 were candidates not listed so far. An alcohol-use disorder was found in 25 patients. Positive results for uEtG, hEtG, and PEth were found in 5/65, 9/65, and 34/66 cases, respectively. PEth positivity was found in 52% of patients with alcohol-related cirrhosis, while 53% of patients with other liver diseases were positive. While uEtG, hEtG, and TLFB correlated with higher PEth values, active waiting list status was significantly correlated with negative PEth values. During the mean follow-up of 41.15 months, 23 patients were transplanted (34.9%). None of the biomarkers significantly predicted survival. CONCLUSIONS PEth can importantly assist abstinence monitoring in LT candidates due to its high validity and objectivity. The high percentage of patients with alcohol consumption in the non-alcoholic liver disease cohort underscores the importance of testing all transplant candidates

    Baltic cod recruitment – the impact of climate variability on key processes

    Large-scale climatic conditions prevailing over the central Baltic Sea resulted in declining salinity and oxygen concentrations in spawning areas of the eastern Baltic cod stock. These changes in hydrography reduced the reproductive success and, combined with high fishing pressure, caused a decline of the stock to the lowest level on record in the early 1990s. The present study aims at disentangling the interactions between reproductive effort and hydrographic forcing leading to variable recruitment. Based on identified key processes, stock dynamics is explained using updated environmental and life stage-specific abundance and production time-series. Declining salinities and oxygen concentrations caused high egg mortalities and indirectly increased egg predation by clupeid fish. Low recruitment, despite enhanced hydrographic conditions for egg survival in the mid-1990s, was due to food limitation for larvae, caused by the decline in the abundance of the copepod Pseudocalanus sp. The case of the eastern Baltic cod stock exemplifies the multitude effects climatic variability may have on a fish stock and underscores the importance of knowledge of these processes for understanding stock dynamics

    Poro-viscoelastic material parameter identification of brain tissue-mimicking hydrogels

    Understanding and characterizing the mechanical and structural properties of brain tissue is essential for developing and calibrating reliable material models. Based on the Theory of Porous Media, a novel nonlinear poro-viscoelastic computational model was recently proposed to describe the mechanical response of the tissue under different loading conditions. The model contains parameters related to the time-dependent behavior arising from both the viscoelastic relaxation of the solid matrix and its interaction with the fluid phase. This study focuses on the characterization of these parameters through indentation experiments on a tailor-made polyvinyl alcohol-based hydrogel mimicking brain tissue. The material behavior is adjusted to ex vivo porcine brain tissue. An inverse parameter identification scheme using a trust region reflective algorithm is introduced and applied to match experimental data obtained from the indentation with the proposed computational model. By minimizing the error between experimental values and finite element simulation results, the optimal constitutive model parameters of the brain tissue-mimicking hydrogel are extracted. Finally, the model is validated using the derived material parameters in a finite element simulation

    Oxygen minimum zone induced rapid temporal fluctuations of Eastern Baltic cod genetic diversity

    Oxygen minimum zones are increasing, yet the effects of these zones on the genetic composition of marine fish stocks has been neglected. We assessed the combined effects of stock size and structure, and the prevailing oxygen situation, on Eastern Baltic cod (ICES SD25) genetic diversity. For this purpose, we used an integrative long-term otolith sample and data series (1995-2013) to (1) calculate the approximate number of females with surviving eggs in a given year, i.e., contributing to reproduction (n F), and (2) the annually resolved cohort mean allelic richness as proxy of genetic diversity, based on 12 microsatellite markers. Cohort mean allelic richness showed strong year-to-year fluctuations though no permanent decline. Importantly, it was highly correlated with n F, but with an unexpected 1.5 year time lag that may be an artefact of Eastern Baltic cod ageing problems. Our findings indicated that environmental pressure can effect rapid alterations in exploited fish stock genetic composition, and pointed to the importance of large females for Eastern Baltic cod reproduction during stagnation periods. Considering the importance of standing genetic variation for the evolutionary potential of populations, this is relevant for projections of the future state of cod stocks under global change
