    ¿Cómo trabajar racismo y xenofobia en Educación Primaria?

    La llegada irregular de población de origen africano a Canarias se ha visto incrementada en este último año. Esta ha despertado actitudes racistas y conductas xenófobas. Desde un punto de vista educativo, este trabajo pretende concienciar y reflexionar acerca de la realidad cultural del entorno próximo del alumnado, fomentando la adquisición del pensamiento crítico, generando valores de igualdad y respeto. En el marco teórico abordamos cuestiones terminológicas atendiendo al uso adecuado de los conceptos relacionados con el racismo y la xenofobia. También, hacemos referencia a los flujos migratorios en Canarias. Finalmente, exponemos algunos modelos educativos relacionados con la diversidad cultural y las bases para trabajar la interculturalidad a través de la educación. En consecuencia, hemos elaborado un proyecto transversal destinado a sexto curso de Educación Primaria contando con la participación de la Federación de Asociaciones de Africanos en Canarias y Tenerife Antirrumores. Este consta de diez sesiones y de una evaluación, estructurándose como una gran cadena cuyos eslabones son ver, vivir, sentir y expresar.The irregular arrival of African migrants to the Canary Islands has increased in the last year. This situation has fostered racist attitudes and xenophobic behavior. From an educational point of view, this project aims to raise awareness and reflects on the cultural reality of the students´ immediate environment, promoting the acquisition of critical thinking, generating values of equality and respect. In the theoretical framework we address terminological issues attending to the proper use of concepts related to racism and xenophobia. Also, we refer to the migratory flows in the Canary Islands. Finally, we analyze some educational models related to cultural diversity and the bases of promoting interculturality through education. Thus, we developed a project for the sixth grade of Primary Education in collaboration with the “Federación de Asociaciones de Africanos en Canarias” and “Tenerife Antirrumores”.     Using the Social-Local-Mobile App for Smoking Cessation in the SmokeFreeBrain Project: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background: Smoking is considered the main cause of preventable illness and early deaths worldwide. The treatment usually prescribed to people who wish to quit smoking is a multidisciplinary intervention, combining both psychological advice and pharmacological therapy, since the application of both strategies significantly increases the chance of success in a quit attempt. Objective: We present a study protocol of a 12-month randomized open-label parallel-group trial whose primary objective is to analyze the efficacy and efficiency of usual psychopharmacological therapy plus the Social-Local-Mobile app (intervention group) applied to the smoking cessation process compared with usual psychopharmacological therapy alone (control group). Methods: The target population consists of adult smokers (both male and female) attending the Smoking Cessation Unit at Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, Seville, Spain. Social-Local-Mobile is an innovative intervention based on mobile technologies and their capacity to trigger behavioral changes. The app is a complement to pharmacological therapies to quit smoking by providing personalized motivational messages, physical activity monitoring, lifestyle advice, and distractions (minigames) to help overcome cravings. Usual pharmacological therapy consists of bupropion (Zyntabac 150 mg) or varenicline (Champix 0.5 mg or 1 mg). The main outcomes will be (1) the smoking abstinence rate at 1 year measured by means of exhaled carbon monoxide and urinary cotinine tests, and (2) the result of the cost-effectiveness analysis, which will be expressed in terms of an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. Secondary outcome measures will be (1) analysis of the safety of pharmacological therapy, (2) analysis of the health-related quality of life of patients, and (3) monitoring of healthy lifestyle and physical exercise habits. Results: Of 548 patients identified using the hospital’s electronic records system, we excluded 308 patients: 188 declined to participate and 120 did not meet the inclusion criteria. A total of 240 patients were enrolled: the control group (n=120) will receive usual psychopharmacological therapy, while the intervention group (n=120) will receive usual psychopharmacological therapy plus the So-Lo-Mo app. The project was approved for funding in June 2015. Enrollment started in October 2016 and was completed in October 2017. Data gathering was completed in November 2018, and data analysis is under way. The first results are expected to be submitted for publication in early 2019. Conclusions: Social networks and mobile technologies influence our daily lives and, therefore, may influence our smoking habits as well. As part of the SmokeFreeBrain H2020 European Commission project, this study aims at elucidating the potential role of these technologies when used as an extra aid to quit smoking

    Two-center experience comparing the use of the FLOT4 and CROSS schemes for patients with gastric, esophageal, and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma

    Introduction. Gastric (GAD), gastroesophageal junction (GEJA), and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAD) share pathophysiological features. At localized stages, FLOT is used perioperatively for the treatment of GAD and GEJA and CROSS for EAD and some GEJA. Although both therapies have been compared with MAGIC, comparative randomized data on FLOT and CROSS are not yet available. Material andmethods. We retrospectively analyzed and compared 40 patients treated with FLOT and 16 patients treated with CROSS in terms of clinical features and neoadjuvant, surgical, adjuvant, and survival outcomes. Results. At the time of analysis, 65% of patients treated with FLOT4 and 56.3% with CROSS remained in complete remission. Those who progressed after FLOT4 did so mainly at the peritoneal level (25%) and after CROSS at the bone, lymph node, and peritoneal levels (12.5% respectively). Six patients (37.5%) died after CROSS (median OS of 17.5 months; 95% CI 2–41) and 10 (25%) after FLOT4 (median OS 16.5 months; 95% CI 11–22). For the living patients, the median numbers of months from diagnosis to the follow-up cutoff date were 47.5 (95% CI 11–67) and 27 (95% CI 14–44) for CROSS and FLOT4, respectively. There were no significant differences in median OS estimated by Kaplan Meier analysis [FLOT4: 50 ± 4.6 months (95% CI 40.9–59.2); CROSS: 51.2 ± 7 months (95% CI 37.4–65.0; p = 0.79)].  Conclusions. Although we obtained lower pCR rates; TNM downstaging after neoadjuvant therapy, R0 rates, tolerance, PFS, and OS were similar in both groups and comparable with trial results. The adjuvant compliance rate was high with FLOT4. CROSS allows sequencing with nivolumab in PD-L1+ tumors

Els treballs han estat realitzats manera individual per part dels estudiants dels grups M-3 i T-1 de l’assignatura Botànica Farmacèutica durant els mesos de febrer a maig del curs 2014-15 com a resultat final del Projecte d’Innovació Docent «Jardins per a la salut: aprenentatge servei a Botànica farmacèutica» (codi 2014PID-UB/054). Tots els treballs s’han dut a terme a través de la plataforma de GoogleDocs i han estat tutoritzats pels professors de l’assignatura. L’objectiu principal de l’activitat ha estat fomentar l’aprenentatge autònom i col·laboratiu en Botànica farmacèutica. També s’ha pretès motivar els estudiants a través del retorn de part del seu esforç a la societat a través d’una experiència d’Aprenentatge-Servei, deixant disponible finalment el treball dels estudiants per a poder ser consultable a través d’una Web pública amb la possibilitat de poder-ho fer in-situ en el propi jardí mitjançant codis QR amb un smartphone

    Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis

    [Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared,the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group

    CIBERER : Spanish national network for research on rare diseases: A highly productive collaborative initiative

    Altres ajuts: Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.CIBER (Center for Biomedical Network Research; Centro de Investigación Biomédica En Red) is a public national consortium created in 2006 under the umbrella of the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII). This innovative research structure comprises 11 different specific areas dedicated to the main public health priorities in the National Health System. CIBERER, the thematic area of CIBER focused on rare diseases (RDs) currently consists of 75 research groups belonging to universities, research centers, and hospitals of the entire country. CIBERER's mission is to be a center prioritizing and favoring collaboration and cooperation between biomedical and clinical research groups, with special emphasis on the aspects of genetic, molecular, biochemical, and cellular research of RDs. This research is the basis for providing new tools for the diagnosis and therapy of low-prevalence diseases, in line with the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC) objectives, thus favoring translational research between the scientific environment of the laboratory and the clinical setting of health centers. In this article, we intend to review CIBERER's 15-year journey and summarize the main results obtained in terms of internationalization, scientific production, contributions toward the discovery of new therapies and novel genes associated to diseases, cooperation with patients' associations and many other topics related to RD research

    VIII Encuentro de Docentes e Investigadores en Historia del Diseño, la Arquitectura y la Ciudad

    Acta de congresoLa conmemoración de los cien años de la Reforma Universitaria de 1918 se presentó como una ocasión propicia para debatir el rol de la historia, la teoría y la crítica en la formación y en la práctica profesional de diseñadores, arquitectos y urbanistas. En ese marco el VIII Encuentro de Docentes e Investigadores en Historia del Diseño, la Arquitectura y la Ciudad constituyó un espacio de intercambio y reflexión cuya realización ha sido posible gracias a la colaboración entre Facultades de Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Diseño de la Universidad Nacional y la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Córdoba, contando además con la activa participación de mayoría de las Facultades, Centros e Institutos de Historia de la Arquitectura del país y la región. Orientado en su convocatoria tanto a docentes como a estudiantes de Arquitectura y Diseño Industrial de todos los niveles de la FAUD-UNC promovió el debate de ideas a partir de experiencias concretas en instancias tales como mesas temáticas de carácter interdisciplinario, que adoptaron la modalidad de presentación de ponencias, entre otras actividades. En el ámbito de VIII Encuentro, desarrollado en la sede Ciudad Universitaria de Córdoba, se desplegaron numerosas posiciones sobre la enseñanza, la investigación y la formación en historia, teoría y crítica del diseño, la arquitectura y la ciudad; sumándose el aporte realizado a través de sus respectivas conferencias de Ana Clarisa Agüero, Bibiana Cicutti, Fernando Aliata y Alberto Petrina. El conjunto de ponencias que se publican en este Repositorio de la UNC son el resultado de dos intensas jornadas de exposiciones, cuyos contenidos han posibilitado actualizar viejos dilemas y promover nuevos debates. El evento recibió el apoyo de las autoridades de la FAUD-UNC, en especial de la Secretaría de Investigación y de la Biblioteca de nuestra casa, como así también de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la UCC; va para todos ellos un especial agradecimiento

    Antibody-Functionalized Nanoformulations for Targeted Therapy of Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Review

    The failure of chemotherapeutic treatment in colorectal cancer (CRC), the second most mortal cancer worldwide, is associated with several drug limitations, such as non-selective distribution, short half-life, and development of multiple resistances. One of the most promising strategies in CRC therapy is the development of delivery systems based on nanomaterials that can transport antitumor agents to the tumor site more efficiently, increasing accumulation within the tumor and thus the antitumor effect. In addition to taking advantage of the increased permeability and retention effect (EPR) of solid tumors, these nanoformulations can be conjugated with monoclonal antibodies that recognize molecular markers that are specifically over-expressed on CRC cells. Active targeting of nanoformulations reduces the adverse effects associated with the cytotoxic activity of drugs in healthy tissues, which will be of interest for improving the quality of life of cancer patients in the future.     Comprehensive model for technoeconomic studies of next-generation central offices for metro networks

    This paper introduces a novel and simplified cost model for designing and evaluating a Central Office Rearchitected as a Datacenter (CORD). The model includes equipment and elements for the realization of optical, packet switching, and data center parts with a special focus not only on relative costs but also on power consumption figures. The cost model is then applied to the design and comparison of a metropolitan area network (MAN) including both aggregation and metrocore nodes following several MAN node architectures based on CORD-like leaf-and-spine fabric. In particular, equipment disaggregation at the Central Offices, both on the packet-switching and optical components, can provide important cost savings to telco operators. On the other hand, incorporating computing/storage capabilities in the MAN for the realization of multiaccess edge computing (MEC) has a significant impact on the total network cost but especially on power consumption.This work has been supported by EU H2020 project Metro-Haul, grant no. 761727 (https://metro-haul.eu)
