Characterization of the topology of the Bitcoin network

Cryptocurrencies have shown great potential over the last years. They introduced a revolutionary concept: the no need for banks or third-party institutions to validate the payments. Transactions are public and known by all the users connected to a distributed network, so anyone can check the historical data. Having knowledge about diferent net- work parameters and nodes interaction can help to improve the protocol and to fnd vul- nerabilities. Bitcoin was the pioneer and is nowadays the most used digital coin. This project proposes a method to explore the reachable nodes of the main Bitcoin network. The script connects to a set of initial nodes and requests their known peers, in order to connect to them and request their list of known peers also. Over 198,000 unique IP ad- dresses were observed, although only 7500 nodes could be reached. The analysis of the data shows statistics of parameters of the nodes, like version used, geographic location or services implemented, and try to use them to give a general overview of the interaction between nodes.Ingeniería Informátic

Abstract : Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) design has been being refined since its conception in the 90’s. Due to its very good performance in both structural and durability scenarios more and more investigations are being made around the optimization of the components needed to achieve such properties. In the early definition of the UHPC researchers proposed that without using very large quantities of cement (between 800 and 1000 kg/m3) and 25% addition of silica fume at water to cement (w/c) ratios below 0.25 it was impossible to obtain a compressive strength of 150 MPa, twenty years after this first proposal it has been shown that upon optimization, large quantities of cement can be replaced by other powders without decreasing the mechanical performance. The possibility of this replacement could have an explanation on the fact that cement at w/c below of around 0.4 does not reach full hydration and works like a hard inclusion in a hydrated matrix, therefore reactive or non-reactive materials could replace the cement if they can make a continuous paste by means of packing density or partial topochemical hydration. This work has two main objectives: • Try to explain why the unhydrated clinker still gives good properties to the binding matrix in low w/c environments • Explain the mechanism in which metakaolin and silica fume improve the performance in Ultra High Performance Concrete systems.

Light-triggered unidirectional molecular rotors: theoretical investigations on conformational dynamics and laser control

Two light-triggered molecular motors based on chiral overcrowded alkenes have been studied in the electronic ground state: a second-generation motor (2) and a redesigned motor (3). A semiempirical Monte-Carlo-type of conformational search has been implemented to find local minima in the ground state PESs of 2 and 3, which then have been reoptimized by ab-initio calculations. While in 3 only the four isomers of the rotary cycle are found, new isomers have been found in the case of 2, leading to different reaction pathways for the thermal helix-inversion. TSs for all the possible thermal conversions have been also computed. The obtained E_a values are in excellent agreement with those reported in the literature. The simple model BCH (core unit of many motors) has been studied from a quantum chemical and quantum dynamical point of view. The controversial nature of BCH's electronic transitions has been investigated using high-level ab-initio multiconfigurational and perturbational methods, including the development of a basis set specific to the problem at hand. The first two excited states of Bu-symmetry ((pi,3s)-Rydberg and (pi,pi*), respectively) are resolved at the MS-CASPT2-level of theory, providing vertical transition energies and oscillator strengths matching the experimental values. In addition, the origin of the (p,p*)-band is computed, yielding an energy value well below the FC-value of the (pi,3s_R)-maximum, explaining this band's unexpected intensity. Finally, a one-dimensional PES along BCH's torsional coordinate has been computed at the MS-CASPT2-level of theory, and quantum dynamical simulations have been carried out. These have focused on the obtainment of control laser fields that are able to trigger unidirectionality even in the symmetric PES (as opposed to 2 and 3 system). Optimal control strategies as well as the intuitive IR+UV-scheme both succeeded in achieving sustained, unidirectional torsional motion of BCH in the excited state

Retinal images are widely used for diagnostic purposes by ophthalmolo- gists. Therefore, these images are suitable for digital image analysis for their visual enhancement and pathological risk or damage detection. Here, we implement a lu- minosity and contrast enhancement technique based on domain knowledge. We also review and analyze a previous approach in optic nerve head segmentation to extend its applicability to non circular shaped contours. We introduce a di erent strategy based on the use of active contours

This paper reviews recent developments of non-contact three-dimensional (3D) surface metrology using an active structured optical probe. We focus primarily on those active non-contact 3D surface measurement techniques that could be applicable to the manufacturing industry. We discuss principles of each technology, and its advantageous characteristics as well as limitations. Towards the end, we discuss our perspectives on the current technological challenges in designing and implementing these methods in practical applications.Purdue Universit
