Is there a 'Neutral theory of Anthropology'?
Lansing and Cox open a welcome discussion of the potential for neutral models in anthropology—it has been almost 50 years since the original neutral models were applied to DNA sequences (e.g., Kimura 1968) and then later to biological phenotypes (e.g., Lande 1976) and cultural data (Cavalli-Sforza and Feldman 1981; Neiman 1995). This long history of research is a gold mine for studies of culture evolution
A generalization of heterochromatic graphs
In 2006, Suzuki, and Akbari & Alipour independently presented a necessary and
sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have a heterochromatic spanning
tree, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have
distinct colors. In this paper, we propose -chromatic graphs as a
generalization of heterochromatic graphs. An edge-colored graph is
-chromatic if each color appears on at most edges. We also
present a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have an
-chromatic spanning forest with exactly components. Moreover, using this
criterion, we show that a -chromatic graph of order with
has an -chromatic spanning forest with exactly
() components if for any
color .Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Co-expression of C9orf72 related dipeptide-repeats over 1000 repeat units reveals age- and combination-specific phenotypic profiles in Drosophila
A large intronic hexanucleotide repeat expansion (GGGGCC) within the C9orf72 (C9orf72-SMCR8 Complex Subunit) locus is the most prevalent genetic cause of both Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and Motor Neuron Disease (MND). In patients this expansion is typically hundreds to thousands of repeat units in length. Repeat associated non-AUG translation of the expansion leads to the formation of toxic, pathological Dipeptide-Repeat Proteins (DPRs). To date there remains a lack of in vivo models expressing C9orf72 related DPRs with a repeat length of more than a few hundred repeats. As such our understanding of how physiologically relevant repeat length DPRs efect the nervous system in an ageing in vivo system remains limited. In this study we generated Drosophila models expressing DPRs over 1000 repeat units in length, a known pathological length in humans. Using these models, we demonstrate each DPR exhibits a unique, age-dependent, phenotypic and pathological profle. Furthermore, we show co-expression of specifc DPR combinations leads to distinct, age-dependent, phenotypes not observed through expression of single DPRs. We propose these models represent a unique, in vivo, tool for dissecting the molecular mechanisms implicated in disease pathology, opening up new avenues in the study of both MND and FTD

Ion-irradiation-assisted tuning of phase transformations and physical properties in single crystalline Fe7Pd3ferromagnetic shape memory alloy thin films
Control of multi-martensite phase transformations and physical properties constitute greatly unresolved challenges in Fe7Pd3-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys. Single crystalline Fe7Pd3 thin films reveal an austenite to martensite phase transformation, continuously ranging from the face-centered cubic (fcc) to the face-centered tetragonal (fct) and body-centered cubic (bcc) phases upon irradiation with 1.8 MeV Kr+ ions. Within the present contribution, we explore this scenario within a comprehensive experimental study: employing atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), we first clarify the crystallography of the ion-irradiation-induced austenite martensite and inter-martensite transitions, explore the multi-variant martensite structures with c-a twinning and unravel a very gradual transition between variants at twin boundaries. Accompanying magnetic properties, addressed locally and globally, are characterized by an increasing saturation magnetization from fcc to bcc, while coercivity and remanence are demonstrated to be governed by magnetocrystalline anisotropy and ion-irradiation-induced defect density, respectively. Based on reversibility of ion-irradiation-induced materials changes due to annealing treatment and a conversion electron Mößbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) study to address changes in order, a quantitative defect-based physical picture of ion-irradiation-induced austenite ⇔ martensite transformation in Fe7Pd3 is developed. The presented concepts thus pave the way for ion-irradiation-assisted optimization strategies for tailored functional alloys

Nonlinear Differential Equations Satisfied by Certain Classical Modular Forms
A unified treatment is given of low-weight modular forms on \Gamma_0(N),
N=2,3,4, that have Eisenstein series representations. For each N, certain
weight-1 forms are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear differential
equations, which yields a single nonlinear third-order equation, called a
generalized Chazy equation. As byproducts, a table of divisor function and
theta identities is generated by means of q-expansions, and a transformation
law under \Gamma_0(4) for the second complete elliptic integral is derived.
More generally, it is shown how Picard-Fuchs equations of triangle subgroups of
PSL(2,R) which are hypergeometric equations, yield systems of nonlinear
equations for weight-1 forms, and generalized Chazy equations. Each triangle
group commensurable with \Gamma(1) is treated.Comment: 40 pages, final version, accepted by Manuscripta Mathematic
Plasma formation from ultracold Rydberg gases
Recent experiments have demonstrated the spontaneous evolution of a gas of
ultracold Rydberg atoms into an expanding ultracold plasma, as well as the
reverse process of plasma recombination into highly excited atomic states.
Treating the evolution of the plasma on the basis of kinetic equations, while
ionization/excitation and recombination are incorporated using rate equations,
we have investigated theoretically the Rydberg-to-plasma transition. Including
the influence of spatial correlations on the plasma dynamics in an approximate
way we find that ionic correlations change the results only quantitatively but
not qualitatively
Analysis of Strong-Coupling Parameters for Superfluid 3He
Superfluid He experiments show strong deviation from the weak-coupling
limit of the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and this discrepancy grows with increasing
pressure. Strong-coupling contributions to the quasiparticle interactions are
known to account for this effect and they are manifest in the five
-coefficients of the fourth order Ginzburg-Landau free energy terms. The
Ginzburg-Landau free energy also has a coefficient to include magnetic
field coupling to the order parameter. From NMR susceptibility experiments, we
find the deviation of from its weak-coupling value to be negligible at
all pressures. New results for the pressure dependence of four different
combinations of -coefficients, _{345}, _{12},
_{245}, and _{5} are calculated and comparison is made with
theory.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. Manuscript prepared for QFS200
Sufficient Covariate, Propensity Variable and Doubly Robust Estimation
Statistical causal inference from observational studies often requires
adjustment for a possibly multi-dimensional variable, where dimension reduction
is crucial. The propensity score, first introduced by Rosenbaum and Rubin, is a
popular approach to such reduction. We address causal inference within Dawid's
decision-theoretic framework, where it is essential to pay attention to
sufficient covariates and their properties. We examine the role of a propensity
variable in a normal linear model. We investigate both population-based and
sample-based linear regressions, with adjustments for a multivariate covariate
and for a propensity variable. In addition, we study the augmented inverse
probability weighted estimator, involving a combination of a response model and
a propensity model. In a linear regression with homoscedasticity, a propensity
variable is proved to provide the same estimated causal effect as multivariate
adjustment. An estimated propensity variable may, but need not, yield better
precision than the true propensity variable. The augmented inverse probability
weighted estimator is doubly robust and can improve precision if the propensity
model is correctly specified
He Structure and Mechanisms of He Backward Elastic Scattering
The mechanism of He backward elastic scattering is studied.
It is found that the triangle diagrams with the subprocesses He,
He and He, where and
denote the singlet deuteron and diproton pair in the state,
respectively, dominate in the cross section at 0.3-0.8 GeV, and their
contribution is comparable with that for a sequential transfer of a pair
at 1-1.5 GeV.
The contribution of the , estimated on the basis of the spectator
mechanism of the He reaction, increases the HeHe cross section by one order of magnitude as compared to the
contribution of the deuteron alone.
Effects of the initial and final states interaction are taken into account.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, 4 postscript figures, expanded version, accepted by
