    ρ\rho meson broadening and dilepton production in heavy ion collisions

    The modification of the width of the rho meson due to in-medium decays and collisions is evaluated. In high temperature and/or high density hadronic matter, the collision width is much larger than the one-loop decay width. The large width of the ρ\rho meson in matter seems to be consistent with some current interpretations of the e+e−e^+ e^- mass spectra measured at the CERN/SPS.Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX, including 4 Postscript figures, to appear in Proc. of QM'99, Nucl.     Fault tolerant control for nonlinear systems using sliding mode and adaptive neural network estimator

    This paper proposes a new fault tolerant control scheme for a class of nonlinear systems including robotic systems and aeronautical systems. In this method, a sliding mode control is applied to maintain system stability under the post-fault dynamics. A neural network is used as on-line estimator to reconstruct the change rate of the fault and compensate for the impact of the fault on the system performance. The control law and the neural network learning algorithms are derived using the Lyapunov method, so that the neural estimator is guaranteed to converge to the fault change rate, while the entire closed-loop system stability and tracking control is guaranteed. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed method achieved fault tolerant control for time-varying fault, rather than just constant fault. This greatly expands the industrial applications of the developed method to enhance system reliability. The main contribution and novelty of the developed method is that the system stability is guaranteed and the fault estimation is also guaranteed for convergence when the system subject to a time-varying fault. A simulation example is used to demonstrate the design procedure and the effectiveness of the method. The simulation results demonstrated that the post-fault is stable and the performance is maintained

    Bag Formation in Quantum Hall Ferromagnets

    Charged skyrmions or spin-textures in the quantum Hall ferromagnet at filling factor nu=1 are reinvestigated using the Hartree-Fock method in the lowest Landau level approximation. It is shown that the single Slater determinant with the minimum energy in the unit charge sector is always of the hedgehog form. It is observed that the magnetization vector's length deviates locally from unity, i.e. a bag is formed which accommodates the excess charge. In terms of a gradient expansion for extended spin-textures a novel O(3) type of effective action is presented, which takes bag formation into account.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Rate of photon production from hot hadronic matter

    Thermal photon emission rates from hot hadronic matter are studied to order e2g4e^{2}g^{4}, where gg indicates a strong-interaction coupling constant. Radiative decay of mesons, Compton and annihilation processes for hadrons, and bremsstrahlung reactions are all considered. Compared to the standard rates from the literature, one finds two orders of magnitude increase for low photon energies stemming mainly from bremsstrahlung and then a modest increase (factor of 2) for intermediate and high energy photons owing to radiative decays for a variety of mesons and from other reactions involving strangeness. These results could have important consequences for electromagnetic radiation studies at RHIC.Comment: 5 pages LaTeX, 4 Postscript figure

    Photon production in relativistic nuclear collisions at SPS and RHIC energies

    Chiral Lagrangians are used to compute the production rate of photons from the hadronic phase of relativistic nuclear collisions. Special attention is paid to the role of the pseudovector a_1 meson. Calculations that include reactions with strange mesons, hadronic form factors and vector spectral densities consistent with dilepton production, as well as the emission from a quark-gluon plasma and primordial nucleon-nucleon collisions, reproduce the photon spectra measured at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS).     Temperature Dependence of Electric and Magnetic Gluon Condensates

    The contribution of Lorentz non-scalar operators to finite temperature correlation functions is discussed. Using the local duality approach for the one-pion matrix element of a product of two vector currents, the temperature dependence of the average gluonic stress tensor is estimated in the chiral limit to be ⟹E2+B2⟩T=π210bT4\langle{\bf E}^2 +{\bf B}^2\rangle_{T}=\frac{\pi^2}{10}bT^4. At a normalization point ÎŒ=0.5\mu=0.5 GeV we obtain b≈1.1b\approx 1.1. Together with the known temperature dependence of the Lorentz scalar gluon condensate we are able to infer ⟹E2⟩T\langle{\bf E}^2\rangle_T and ⟹B2⟩T\langle{\bf B}^2\rangle_T separately in the low-temperature hadronic phase.Comment: 11 pages, TPI-MINN-92/37-

    The properties of ρ\rho-mesons at finite temperature (TT) are examined with an effective chiral lagrangian in which vector and axial-vector mesons are included as massive Yang-Mills fields of the chiral symmetry.     Loosely bound hyperons in the SU(3) Skyrme model

    Hyperon pairs bound in deuteron like states are obtained within the SU(3) Skyrme model in agreement with general expectations from boson exchange models. The central binding from the flavor symmetry breaking terms increases with the strangeness contents of the interacting baryons whereas the kinetic non-linear σ\sigma-model term fixes the spin and isospin of the bound pair.     Off-shell effects in dilepton production from hot interacting mesons

    The production of dielectrons in reactions involving a_1 mesons and pions is studied. We compare results obtained with different phenomenological Lagrangians that have been used in connection with hadronic matter and finite nuclei. We insist on the necessity for those interactions to satisfy known empirical properties of the strong interaction. Large off-shell effects in dielectron production are found and some consequences for the interpretation of heavy ion data are outlined.
