Adolescents’ academic performance and the way it is related to their subjective wellbeing are issues of great interest across educational systems. The purpose of this study was to ascertain how satisfaction with high school subjects can predict school satisfaction and academic performance in Mexican students. The sample consisted of 457 high school students in the Baja California and Nuevo León states in Mexico (247 boys, 210 girls); their mean age being 14.10 (SD = 0.84). We used a questionnaire featuring a subject satisfaction scale, an intrinsic school satisfaction scale, and one related to academic grades. We used descriptive analyses, correlations, and structural regression models. In terms of results, the high satisfaction and academic performance levels in physical education, Spanish and English are worth highlighting. Geography and history are the most relevant predictors of academic grades, while Spanish predicts school satisfaction and physical education predicts boredom. In conclusion, satisfaction with mathematics, Spanish, and English are strong predictors of satisfaction (SATF), and the latter in turn predicts Mexican high school students’ academic performance

Continuous updates of knowledge among professionals in physical education (PE) and sport are essential for the goal of developing quality professional work. In our current globalized and changing world, continuous and permanent learning is fundamental for organizing and complementing initial training and previous experience. To ensure competence in the field of PE and sport, it is important to have a proactive attitude towards the extensive knowledge arising from continuous research and to integrate it with one’s prior knowledge and work experience. This is the path to career improvement and satisfaction. Certainly, research is an unfinished and diverse construct: it is a permanent learning process in terms of interpretations, explanations, and contributions. Globalization, research, and education must respond to continuous changes in the different spheres of social, economic, and scientific activity. Information and communication technologies provide excellent mechanisms to facilitate the study, exchange, and dissemination of principal research findings regarding knowledge and knowledge socialization events. For this reason, and to develop competence or learning, it is also necessary to select the most appropriate information as well as quality publications that are produced with methodological rigor. Integrating knowledge in a way that can be suitably applied in the modern setting will help us to flourish as highly competent professionals in PE and sports, a field that is increasingly taken up by the population

Effects of Motivation, Basic Psychological Needs, and Teaching Competence on Disruptive Behaviours in Secondary School Physical Education Students

    Get PDF
Currently, disruptive and aggressive behaviours of a physical and verbal nature are a reality among adolescent students and a concern in the educational context. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to analyse the effects of perceived teaching competence, motivation and basic psychological needs on disruptive behaviours in secondary school PE students. The sample was composed of 758 adolescent students from seven public secondary schools. The following instruments adapted to physical education were used: The Disruptive Behaviours Questionnaire, The Evaluation of Teaching Competencies Scale, The Sport Motivation Scale, and The Basic Psychological Needs Scale. Multilevel regression models with the MIXED procedure were performed for data analysis. The results show that misbehaviour is more likely among male students and that disruptive behaviours decrease when a teacher is perceived as competent. Students with greater self-determined motivation are more likely to exhibit fewer behaviours related to low engagement and irresponsibility while amotivation increases the different disruptive behaviours in the classroom. In conclusion, it is proposed that educators work in line with the students’ needs by responding to their interests and that this will increase self-determined motivation

This article summarizes a study whose aim was the analysis of the content concerning the block of Outdoor Activities in the Natural Environment which is included in the annual syllabus designed by PE teachers and, thus, that tends to be developed during the course at different levels of Compulsory Secondary Education. To do so, the main instrument used has been a questionnaire that has been applied to 51 PE teachers of the Almeria province (Spain). These teachers were taking part on an in service training course around physical and sports outdoor activities in the natural environment. Data obtained has been analyzed using SPSS V.15.Among the findings, we show that teachers pay more attention to the contents related to the practices of hiking, trecking and orienteering. This seems to be due, on the one hand, to the fact that these contents are the most regulated (among the outdoor activities) by the Official Curricula and, on the other, to the existence of many resources and bibliographic materials on this topic

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of the motivational climate created by the coach and perceived by a group of young high-performance handball players on their sport motivation, self-determination, sport psychological needs and sport commitment. The study participants were 479 young handball players. The age range was 16–17 years old. Players were administered a battery composed of a Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire, Sport Motivation Scale, the Basic Psychological Needs in Exercise Scale and Sport Commitment Questionnaire to measure the above-mentioned theoretical constructs. Results showed that the handball players showed high levels of a task-involving climate, of basic psychological needs satisfaction and of self-determined motivation and commitment. Higher levels of basic psychological needs such as autonomy and competence were associated with a higher task-involving climate, self-determined index and sport commitment (task-involving climate–basic psychological needs (β = 0.55; 95% IC 0.387/0.682; p = 0.001); Ego-involving climate–basic psychological needs (β = 0.06; 95% IC −0.069/0.181; p = 0.387); Basic psychological needs–self-determined index (β = 0.48; 95% IC 0.376/0.571; p = 0.001); Self-determined index–commitment (β = 0.58; 95% IC 0.488/0.663; p = 0.001). The obtained model showed that basic psychological needs mediated the association between a task-involving climate and self-determination, and self-determination mediated the association between basic psychological needs satisfaction and commitment
