Wild Edible Plants of Andalusia: Traditional Uses and Potential of Eating Wild in a Highly Diverse Region
A review of ethnobotanical sources focused on traditionally-used wild food plants in
Andalusia (southern Spain), one of the most biodiverse regions in Europe, is carried out. With
21 original sources plus some previously unpublished data, the dataset shows a high diversity of
these traditional resources, reaching 336 species or c. 7% of the total wild flora. Cultural aspects
related to the use of some species are discussed and data are compared with similar works. The
results are discussed through the lens of conservation and bromatology. For 24% of the edible plants,
informants also mentioned a medicinal use (achieved by consuming the same part of the plant). In
addition, a list of 166 potentially edible species is provided based on a review of data from other
Spanish territorie
Gathering an edible wild plant: food or medicine? A case study on wild edibles and functional foods in Granada, Spain
A study on wild edible resources has been performed in the western part of Granada Province (Spain) using ethnobotanical methods. We document and analyze knowledge concerning wild edible plants and mushrooms and their folk medicinal uses in the study area. Several botanical features and use characteristics have been analyzed for the species included, with special attention to their medicinal uses, highlighting a large number of edible-medicinal species. Local importance of the medicinal uses for these resources has been confirmed. Up to 135 species are gathered from the wild in the study area, from which 46 can be considered folk functional foods. In addition, 45 crop plants with uncommon edible or medicinal uses are included, 29 of these being considered functional foods as well. Therefore, a total of 75 plant species are used as edible medicines which serve to treat 36 different conditions. The local concept of food and medicine regarding wild plant resources seems not to be well established. Studies on the pharmacological properties of these foods are needed in order to establish their real or potential benefits for the treated affections

The mountain areas are, at the present time, due your isolated situation,
places where are still using plants for curing human and animal diseases.
In this work are related the developing of this areas with the explotation
of ours natural resources, as crops or as picking.
For this, and froro ours direct investigations in the Güéjar-Sierra town
(Andalucía, Spain), are advocated for a interdisciplinary study for to obtain a

Phytotoponymy and Synphytotoponymy in Western Granada Province (Andalusia, Spain)
Within the framework of a research project on the ethnobotany of the western section
of the province of Granada, in southern Spain, a detailed study was made of place names
derived from names related to plants (phytotoponyms and synphytotoponyms). The
information —gathered from the Territorial Land Registry of Granada, the Regional
Government of Andalusia and field work— has been included in a database written with
the Microsoft Excel program. References to a total of 98 plant species were found in as
many as 593 place names of the area. The authors comment on the environmental,
paleophytogeographic and ethnobotanical significance of the species represented in the

IN VIVO activity of essential oil Origanum elongatum against larva L3 of Anisakis pegreffii
Anisakiasis is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by species of the genus Anisakis. In humans, this
parasite is manifested by digestive symptoms. In the virtual absence of effective treatments against
this infection, our working group has initiated a series of investigations aimed at finding natural
products such as essential oils and their major components, which might be of interest in the treatment
of the infectious form of these zoonoses. OBJECTIVE: Establishment of the possible in vivo activity
of essential oil of O. elongatum, against L3 larva of Anisakis pegreffii.
METHODOLOGY: For the study in vivo, parasites were isolated from the host Scomber japonicus
(mackerel) and Trachurus trachurus (horse mackerel). The experimental animals (female Wistar rats)
were infected with 6 Anisakis larva by gastric catheter, this technique was used also for the
administration of O. elongatum (46.9 mg / 0.5 ml of olive oil), according to the following guidelines:
infection and joint treatment and sacrifice at 4 hours. Parallel to this, a control test was performed,
administering 0.5 ml olive oil together with six larvae of the parasite to a group of animals. The
identification of the larvae was carried out using molecular techniques (PCR-RFLP). The
identification of the main components of essential oil was performed by GC-MS.Trabajo financiado por el proyecto: P07-CVI-0324
The Antioxidant Properties of Salvia verbenaca Extract Contribute to Its Intestinal Antiinflammatory Effects in Experimental Colitis in Rats
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal inflammation with unpredictable symptom fluctuations. While there is no effective cure for IBD, various treatments aim to manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for affected individuals. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential benefits of certain natural plants and herbs in the management of IBD. In this regard, this study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of a well-characterized extract of Salvia verbenaca (S. verbenaca) in an experimental model of colitis in rats. Interestingly, the daily administration of S. verbenaca (10 and 25 mg/kg) effectively alleviated colitis symptoms, as evidenced by reduced weight/length ratio and colonic damage. Moreover, it reduced oxidative stress markers (MPO and GSH), decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine expression (Il-6, Il-12a, Il-1β, Il-23, Icam-1, Mcp-1, Cinc-1), and preserved the integrity of the intestinal barrier (Villin, Muc-2, Muc-3). These effects suggest S. verbenaca extract could represent a potential complementary candidate to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Its beneficial actions can be related to its antioxidant properties as well as the downregulation of the immune response, which can result in the improvement in the intestine epithelial barrier.Junta de Andalucia (AGR-6826)Junta de Andalucia (CTS-164)Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (SAF2011-29648)Instituto de Salud Carlos III (pFIS (FI20/00159)Instituo de Saud Carlos III (Miguel Servet CP22/00153
Forest as Stronghold of Local Ecological Practice: Currently Used Wild Food Plants in Polesia, Northern Ukraine
Local ecological practice (LEP, e.g., the everyday practice of collecting and using plants, including wild food plants) is shaped by nature (available local resources) and culture (local perceptions and knowledge on their usability), including a multitude of factors, among which language and geographical or cultural separation have been found to play crucial roles in affecting biocultural diversity. Also, proximity to the forest has been shown to increase the use of plants. We conducted ethnobotanical fieldwork within eastern and western regions of Ukrainian Polesia, during which we interviewed 118 people. Through semi-structured interviews, we recorded the distribution of the current uses of 70 wild food taxa. The analysis of use records revealed homogeneous distribution of use despite the geographical distance and different spoken dialects; however, we were able to single out the highly sylvan region of eastern Polesia as the area with highest biocultural diversity for the use of wild food plants. The results suggest that in the context of the overall homogenization of local ecological knowledge, the continued existence of unintended contact with nature through living and working in the forest may be the primary factor maintaining the broader LEP in the sylvan area of eastern Polesia.

Peer reviewe
