    Developtment of a software tool for the analysis and verification of emergency operating procedures through the integrated simulation of plant and operators actions

    Probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) includes operator actions as elements in the set of the considered protection performances during accident sequences. Nevertheless, its impact throughout a sequence is not usually analyzed dynamically. In this sense, it is convenient to make a more detailed analysis about its importance in the dynamics of the sequences, allowing for sensitivity studies with respect to human reliability and response times. For this reason, new developments in simulation software must be able to incorporate operator actions in conventional thermalhydraulic simulations. In this paper, we present one of these new tools, the TRETA/TIZONA–COPMA III coupled codes, which can be used for evaluating the impact in the final plant state of the execution by operators of procedures and the evaluation of the available times for the manual actions of the operators. This software tool consists of a closed-loop plant/operator simulator: a thermalhydraulic code for simulating the plant transient (TRETA for PWR NPPs and TIZONA for BWR NPPs) and the procedures processor (COPMA III) to simulate the operator actions requested by the procedures, both coupled by a data communication system which allows the information exchange (SWBus). The first pilot cases have been performed in order to analyze sequences initiated by secondary side breaks leading to loss of heat sink sequences in a PWR plant. These tests have been carried out using the real plant EOPs for COPMA-III and a PWR plant model for TRETA code. The results of these simulations are presented in this paper

    The C-type lectin homologue gene (EP153R) of African swine fever virus inhibits apoptosis both in virus infection and in heterologous expression

    AbstractThe open reading frame EP153R of African swine fever virus (ASFV) encodes a nonessential protein that has been involved in the hemadsorption process induced in virus-infected cells. By the use of a virus deletion mutant lacking the EP153R gene, we have detected, in several virus-sensitive cells, increased levels of caspase-3 and cell death as compared with those obtained after infection with the parental BA71V strain. Both transient and stable expression of the EP153R gene in Vero or COS cells resulted in a partial protection of the transfected lines from the apoptosis induced in response to virus infection or external stimuli. The presence of gene EP153R resulted in a reduction of the transactivating activity of the cellular protein p53 in Vero cell cultures in which apoptosis was induced by virus infection or staurosporine treatment. This is to our knowledge the first description of a viral C-type lectin with anti-apoptotic properties

    Formation of Pd2Si on single-crystalline Si (100) at ultrafast heating rates : an in-situ analysis by nanocalorimetry

    The kinetics of intermediate phase formation between ultrathin films of Pd (12 nm) and single-crystalline Si (100) is monitored by in-situ nanocalorimetry at ultrafast heating rates. The heat capacity curves show an exothermic peak related to the formation of Pd2Si. A kinetic model which goes beyond the conventional linear-parabolic growth to consider independent nucleation and lateral growth of Pd2Si along the interface and vertical growth mechanisms is developed to fit the calorimetric curves. The model is used to extract the effective interfacial nucleation/growth and diffusion coefficients at the unusually high temperatures of silicide formation achieved at very fast heating rates

    Emission polarization control in semiconductor quantum dots coupled to a photonic crystal microcavity

The linearly polarized emission of a selected quantum dot changes continuously its polarization angle, from nearly perpendicular to the cavity mode polarization at large detuning, to parallel at zero detuning, and reversing sign for negative detuning. The linear polarization rotation is qualitatively interpreted in terms of the detuning dependent mixing of the quantum dot and cavity states.     TREM-2 plays a protective role in cholestasis by acting as a negative regulator of inflammation

    Background & Aims: Inflammation, particularly that mediated by bacterial components translocating from the gut to the liver and binding to toll-like receptors (TLRs), is central to cholestatic liver injury. The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-2 (TREM-2) inhibits TLR-mediated signaling and exerts a protective role in hepatocellular injury and carcinogenesis. This study aims to evaluate the role of TREM-2 in cholestasis.Methods: TREM-2 expression was analyzed in the livers of pa-tients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) or primary scle-rosing cholangitis (PSC), and in mouse models of cholestasis. Wild-type (WT) and Trem-2 deficient (Trem-2-/-) mice were subjected to experimental cholestasis and gut sterilization. Pri-mary cultured Kupffer cells were incubated with lipopolysac-charide and/or ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and inflammatory responses were analyzed.Results: TREM-2 expression was upregulated in the livers of patients with PBC or PSC, and in murine models of cholestasis. Compared to WT, the response to bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced obstructive cholestasis or alpha-naphtylisothiocyanate (ANIT)-induced cholestasis was exacerbated in Trem-2-/-mice. This was characterized by enhanced necroptotic cell death, in-flammatory responses and biliary expansion. Antibiotic treat-ment partially abrogated the effects observed in Trem-2-/-mice after BDL. Experimental overexpression of TREM-2 in the liver of WT mice downregulated ANIT-induced IL-33 expression and neutrophil recruitment. UDCA regulated Trem-1 and Trem-2 expression in primary cultured mouse Kupffer cells and damp-ened inflammatory gene transcription via a TREM-2-dependent mechanism.Conclusions: TREM-2 acts as a negative regulator of inflamma-tion during cholestasis, representing a novel potential thera-peutic target.Lay summary: Cholestasis (the reduction or cessation of bile flow) causes liver injury. This injury is exacerbated when gut-derived bacterial components interact with receptors (spe-cifically Toll-like receptors or TLRs) on liver-resident immune cells, promoting inflammation. Herein, we show that the anti-inflammatory receptor TREM-2 dampens TLR-mediated signaling and hence protects against cholestasis-induced liver injury.     Equality, Equity, and Diversity: Educational Solutions in the Basque Country

    Public education is one of the greatest achievements of European countries during the twentieth century. While schooling systems neither exclusively form citizens, nor are they sufficient to alleviate all inequalities, education plays an increasingly important strategic role in relieving social problems and promoting the civic and ethical upbringing of our children. Researchers and professors at the UPV/EHU have had the privilege to design and implement important educational projects in conjunction with government of Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, which has the authority over education in its territory. This book presents the timely (in most cases since 2000) observations, research, and programs that have resulted from this cooperation. Our stress—in both our theoretical and analytical dimensions—has been on the importance of diversity, the promotion of social and human values, and respect for basic human rights.     Incidence, risk factors, clinical characteristics and outcomes of deep venous thrombosis in patients with COVID-19 attending the Emergency Department: results of the UMC-19-S8

    Background and importance: A higher incidence of venous thromboembolism [both pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)] in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been described. But little is known about the true frequency of DVT in patients who attend emergency department (ED) and are diagnosed with COVID-19. Objective: We investigated the incidence, risk factors, clinical characteristics and outcomes of DVT in patients with COVID-19 attending the ED before hospitalization. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all COVID patients diagnosed with DVT in 62 Spanish EDs (20% of Spanish EDs, case group) during the first 2 months of the COVID-19 outbreak. We compared DVT-COVID-19 patients with COVID-19 without DVT patients (control group). Relative frequencies of DVT were estimated in COVID and non-COVID patients visiting the ED and annual standardized incidences were estimated for both populations. Sixty-three patient characteristics and four outcomes were compared between cases and controls. Results: We identified 112 DVT in 74 814 patients with COVID-19 attending the ED [1.50‰; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.23-1.80‰]. This relative frequency was similar than that observed in non-COVID patients [2109/1 388 879; 1.52‰; 95% CI, 1.45-1.69‰; odds ratio (OR) = 0.98 [0.82-1.19]. Standardized incidence of DVT was higher in COVID patients (98,38 versus 42,93/100,000/year; OR, 2.20; 95% CI, 2.03-2.38). In COVID patients, the clinical characteristics associated with a higher risk of presenting DVT were older age and having a history of venous thromboembolism, recent surgery/immobilization and hypertension; chest pain and desaturation at ED arrival and some analytical disturbances were also more frequently seen, d-dimer >5000 ng/mL being the strongest. After adjustment for age and sex, hospitalization, ICU admission and prolonged hospitalization were more frequent in cases than controls, whereas mortality was similar (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.77-2.45). Conclusions: DVT was an unusual form of COVID presentation in COVID patients but was associated with a worse prognosis

    Silicon photonic mode multiplexers based on subwavelength metamaterials and on-chip beam forming

Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is deemed as one of the most promising technologies to increase aggregated data bandwidth and avoid a communication capacity crunch. In this invited talk, we review our latest advances on integrated silicon mode multiplexers, including new topologies based on subwavelength grating (SWG) metamaterials for extended broadband operation and higher-order mode support. Specifically, we report on an ultra-broadband multiplexer based on a phase shifter and a multimode interference (MMI) coupler both engineered with subwavelength metamaterials.     Safety and Revisit Related to Discharge the Sixty-one Spanish Emergency Department Medical Centers Without Hospitalization in Patients with COVID-19 Pneumonia. A Prospective Cohort Study UMC-Pneumonia COVID-19

    Background: Information is needed on the safety and efficacy of direct discharge from the emergency department (ED) of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to study the variables associated with discharge from the ED in patients presenting with COVID-19 pneumonia, and study ED revisits related to COVID-19 at 30 days (EDR30d). Methods: Multicenter study of the SIESTA cohort including 1198 randomly selected COVID patients in 61 EDs of Spanish medical centers from March 1, 2020, to April 30, 2020. We collected baseline and related characteristics of the acute episode and calculated the adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for ED discharge. In addition, we analyzed the variables related to EDR30d in discharged patients. Results: We analyzed 859 patients presenting with COVID-19 pneumonia, 84 (9.8%) of whom were discharged from the ED. The variables independently associated with discharge were being a woman (aOR 1.890; 95%CI 1.176-3.037), age 1200/mm(3) (aOR 4.667; 95%CI 1.045-20.839). The EDR30d of the ED discharged group was 40.0%, being lower in women (aOR 0.368; 95%CI 0.142-0.953). A total of 130 hospitalized patients died (16.8%) as did two in the group discharged from the ED (2.4%) (OR 0.121; 95%CI 0.029-0.498). Conclusion: Discharge from the ED in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia was infrequent and was associated with few variables of the episode. The EDR30d was high, albeit with a low mortality

    Por décadas permeó una visión de la tecnología como una de las principales fuentes del ataque al medio ambiente y de su degradación. Hoy se le considera como un aliado para combatir los efectos negativos de la perenne negligencia ecológica humana. El uso de la tecnología para la implementación de estrategias innovadoras y eficaces en favor del medio ambiente, un hábitat seguro y sustentable, se abordó en el Congreso Internacional sobre Sustentabilidad en los Hábitats, realizado en 2016. De este encuentro entre estudiantes, especialistas, autoridades y organizaciones civiles de América Latina, Asia y Europa emana este libro, que incluye dos ejes de relevancia global: los retos en el manejo sustentable de los recursos naturales y el uso de tecnologías para la edificación sustentable. En el primero se atienden desde los riesgos asociados al crecimiento demográfico desproporcionado hasta acciones de carácter remedial para la contaminación; mientras que en el segundo se aborda el desarrollo de tecnología e infraestructura para mejorar el hábitat urbano, así como procesos donde alumnos y profesores confeccionan soluciones para la sustentabilidad energética.
