Designing facilitated task constraints for different age groups in soccer: The impact of floaters’ rules
This study compared the influence of changing floaters’ rules on player positioning in small-sided games (SSG) played by different age groups. A total of 48 youth soccer players (24 U-13 and 24 U-14) took part in the study, playing three different SSGs: regular 3vs3, 1-floater condition (one floater playing for both teams), and 2-floater condition (one floater per team, with alternate participation). Positional data were collected by 5 Hz GPS devices, generating individual (spatial exploration index) and collective (team’s length, width, length per width ratio, and stretching index) positional variables. The results revealed that the 2-floater format significantly reduced the length (p = 0.001), and both formats with floaters increased the width (p < 0.001). Also, the 1-floater format presented the lowest stretching index (p < 0.001). Concerning age-group differences, older players presented higher values of length (p < 0.001), length per width ratio (p < 0.001), and spatial exploration index (p < 0.001) than their younger counterparts. The 2-floater SSG format is a more facilitated and simplified version of numerically unbalanced SSGs, which might be considered by coaches when designing tasks adjusted to the level of the athletes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Numerical superiority changes the physical demands of soccer players during smallsided games
Small-sided games are used for the training of soccer athletes because they replicate the physical and technical demands in a game-related context. Different game configurations are possible, such as differences in the number of players, i.e., 3vs.3 or 4vs.4. However, unbalanced situations are common during a competition, but have been little studied in small-sided games. This study compared the physical demands of 3vs.3, 4vs.3 (additional player in the attacking team) and 3vs.3+2 (two supporting players around the field). Eighteen young male soccer players participated in the study. Data were obtained with a 15-Hz GPS unit equipped with a 100-Hz triaxial accelerometer. Thirty-six smallsided games were observed and each session consisted of two 4-minute small-sided games and 4 minutes of passive rest. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test, one-way ANOVA for repeated measures and paired t-test were used to analyze the data. A reduction in physical demands was observed for small-sided games performed in unbalanced situations (4vs.3), including a shorter total distance covered, distance covered at higher intensities, and acceleration demands. Similar results were observed for additional players compared to regular players. In conclusion, the presence of additional players changed the physical demands of soccer players. This result permits coaches to adjust training configurations to their intentions during each session.
RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WELLNESS STATUS AND PERCEIVED TRAINING LOAD ON DAILY AND WEEKLY BASES OVER A BASKETBALL SEASON
This study aimed to determine the relationships between internal training load (session-RPE) and wellness status (delayed onset muscle soreness – DOMS, stress, fatigue, and sleep quality) on both daily and weekly bases over a basketball season. Fifteen professional basketball players provided their wellness status and perceived training load for all training sessions and matches over a season. Daily correlations were based on the perceived load of a training session/match and the wellness status rated on the following day (before the next session). Weekly correlations were based on the sum of all ratings of the week for each variable. Results showed that DOMS and fatigue presented higher correlations with session-RPE than stress and sleep quality on both daily and weekly analyses. Daily measures presented small-to-moderate correlations between the perceived training load and wellness categories over the months. Weekly correlations increased (moderate-tolarge) for all wellness categories, except for stress. We concluded that DOMS and fatigue are more associated to session-RPE than stress and sleep quality in professional basketball players. Weekly analyses may help coaches to better understand the impact of training load on athletes’ physical wellness (DOMS and fatigue), possibly due to a delayed physiological response to training load
This study aimed to compare the network properties and shots on goal in futsal matches of under-09 teams, in games played with (WiK) and without (WoK) the shooting after the kick-in rule. Six futsal matches in WoK and four in WiK were analyzed. The Social Network Analysis and Notational Analysis were used for interpretation of the network properties and shots on goal, respectively. The results showed higher network values in matches WiK than in matches WoK. The findings of the present study indicated a higher incidence of shots on goal and corner kicks in matches WiK. It is concluded that allowing the players to shot on goal after the kick-in increased the interaction between players and shots on goal in the U-09 futsal matches. Although the WoK showed less network values than WiK, it is suggested that coaches may use this rule to stimulate the progression of players on the court.
Network analysis in small-sided and conditioned soccer games: the influence of additional players and playing position
The purpose of this article was to investigate the influence of additional players and playing position on the network properties during 2x4 minutes small-sided and conditioned games (SSCG) in soccer. Eighteen
young soccer players (age 16.4±0.7 years), six defenders, six midfielders, and six forwards, voluntarily participated in SSCGs with different task conditions (4vs.3, with an additional player inside the pitch, 3vs.3+2, with two support players at the side of the pitch, and 3vs.3, numerical equality). General (density, total links and clustering coefficient) and individual (degree centrality, degree prestige, and page rank) network properties were analyzed using the SocNetV® software. Results showed higher values of density (F=59.354, p=.001), total links (F=40.951, p=.001), and clustering coefficient (F=21.851, p=.001) during the 4vs.3 SSCG. Besides, midfielders showed higher values of degree centrality than defenders and forwards (F=10.669, p=.001). Midfielders and forwards also showed higher values of degree prestige than defenders (F=5.527, p=.005). These results indicate that both task condition and playing position influence the general and individual network properties during SSCGs. For this reason, it is suggested that both task condition and team composition need to be adjusted to the coaches’ purpose for each training session in order to maximize the possibilities of cooperation among the teammates
Basketball small-sided games: effects of varying formats and using successive bouts
This study compared athletes’ rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and the number of their technical-tactical actions in small-sided basketball games (SSG) played within the same relative area with adjusted bout durations in (a) varied game formats; and (b) in two successive bouts of different formats. Ten young female basketball players (14.3±1.3 years) played two bouts of five small-sided game (SSG) formats (1x1, 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, and 5x5). The number of technical-tactical actions per player per minute decreased from the smaller to the larger SSG format, and players’ RPE tended to be higher in larger compared to smaller formats. We concluded that the smaller basketball SSG formats increased players’ participation. In addition, adjustments of the relative playing area and bout duration seemed to decrease players’ effort. The use of two SSG bouts did impact the number of technical-tactical actions and RPE
Recreational soccer training effects on pediatric populations physical fitness and health: a systematic review
This systematic review analyzed the effects of recreational soccer programs on physical fitness and health-related outcomes in youth populations. Studies were sought in the following databases: (i) PubMed, (ii) Scopus, (iii) SPORTDiscus, and (iv) Web of Science. The eligibility criteria included (1) population: youth (<18 years old) populations with no restrictions on sex or health condition; (2) intervention: exposure to a recreational soccer training program of at least four weeks duration; (3) comparator: a passive or active control group not exposed to a recreational soccer training program; (4) outcomes: physical fitness (e.g., aerobic, strength, speed, and change-of-direction) or health-related measures (e.g., body composition, blood pressure, heart rate variability, and biomarkers); (5) study design: a randomized parallel group design. The search was conducted on 6 September 2022 with no restrictions as to date or language. The risk of bias was assessed using the PEDro scale for randomized controlled studies. From a pool of 37,235 potentially relevant articles, 17 were eligible for inclusion in this review. Most of the experimental studies revealed the beneficial effects of recreational soccer for improving aerobic fitness and its benefits in terms of blood pressure and heart-rate markers. However, body composition was not significantly improved by recreational soccer. The main results revealed that recreational soccer training programs that are implemented twice a week could improve the generality of physical fitness parameters and beneficially impact cardiovascular health and biomarkers. Thus, recreational soccer meets the conditions for being included in the physical education curriculum as a good strategy for the benefit of the general health of children and young people.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
