Toxic Social Media: Affective Polarization After Feminist Protests

    Get PDF
The objective of this article is to conceptualize affective polarization beyond partisan politics to instead analyze the ways in which women’s affective political participation is subject to toxic discipline. While a lot of focus has been placed on affective politics as mechanisms for governance, little has been done regarding affective polarization after feminist protest. In this article, we bridge two bodies of literature—affective politics and political polarization—by proposing the notion of affective polarization. We focused on the case of a series of feminist mobilizations that took place to fight back against the impunity of police violence in Mexico. We conducted a mixed-method approach that combines, on one hand, quantitative analysis of data strand tweets encompassing #EllasNoMeRepresentan (TheyDoNotRepresentMe) (N = 17,698) and #EllasSiMeRepresentan (TheyDoRepresentMe) (N = 6700) and, on the other hand, a qualitative analysis of 500 tweets of each hashtag. The results of the study revealed the existence of polarization that aims at disciplining the affective political participation of women. Almost half of our data contain negative sentiments. The toxic tweets include corrective threats, such as incitation to sexual violence, murder, hate against feminism, and patronizing discourses about how women should protest. We thus conclude that while it is true that social media has amplified feminist mobilization, it has also led to an increase of digital violence. With these findings, the article contributes to a better understanding of both feminist affective politics and its disciplining governing mechanisms in a patriarchal social media

Street Mapping of Traffic Signs through an Automated Intelligent Device

    Get PDF
Most commercial mapping services tend to use either data generated by them or data provided by external entities, usually at a price. Efforts that try to keep this information freely available are likely to depend on the help of volunteers, for instance the OpenStreetMap project. To support them, this document presents a system that reduces the work of mapping streets manually. It is a proof of concept of a street mapping device that captures video, keeps useful images, and identifies traffic signs. Due to the limited storage capacity, the device analyzes the images and discards the ones without relevant differences, for this it uses the Structural Similarity index to decide the images that will be stored. Then, it uses an AlexNext-based neural network to identify traffic signs and provide extra useful information about the streets, which later is added to the metadata of the images. This proof of concept illustrates a modular system flow to automate the street mapping task, which can later be extended and improved for more robust and accurate results. This system can be applied to generate more mapping information in cities, such as the Guadalajara Metropolitan area

Producción de orégano (Origanum sp) con fertilización nitrogenada en suelos arenosos de Corrientes

    Get PDF

Evaluation of a mobile application for heart failure telemonitoring

    Get PDF
Q2Adequate adherence to treatment is indispensable in preventing adverse consequences in heart failure patients. Such adherence can be managed through heart failure clinics and various methods of follow-up. In recent years, the use of telemonitoring has shown promising benefits in supporting clinicians' follow-up, as well as contributing to patients' self-care. This article presents the development and evaluation of a telemonitoring application for heart failure, through a Web-based interface for clinicians and a mobile application for patients. The application was evaluated through a 6-month pilot observational descriptive study in 20 outpatients with reduced ejection fraction and two nurses, in the context of a heart failure clinic. A technological acceptance questionnaire was applied to all patients and nurses at the end of the study period. In use, the application generated 64 real-time alerts for early decision-making to prevent complications, and 91% of patients did not present hospital readmissions. Such results, along with high user acceptance, show potential utility of the application as an effective complementary strategy for follow-up of patients with heart failure.Revista Internacional - Indexad

    Supporting nested parallelism

    Get PDF
Many parallel applications do not completely fit into the data parallel model. Although these applications contain data parallelism, task parallelism is needed to represent the natural computation structure or enhance performance. To combine the easiness of programming of the data parallel model with the efficiency of the task parallel model allows to parallel forms to be nested, giving Nested parallelism. In this work, we examine the solutions provided to N ested parallelism in two standard parallel programming platforms, HPF and MPI. Both their expression capacity and their efficiency are compared on a Cray- 3TE, which is distributed memory machine. Finally, an additional speech about the use of the methodology proposed for MPI is done on two different architecturesI Workshop de Procesamiento Distribuido y Paralelo (WPDP)Red de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Abstract

Background

Oxidative stress and matrix metalloproteinases -9 and -2 are involved in periodontal breakdown, whereas gingival crevicular fluid has been reported to reflect apical status. The aim of this study was to characterize oxidant balance and activity levels of MMP -2 and -9 in apical lesions and healthy periodontal ligament; and second, to determine whether potential changes in oxidant balance were reflected in gingival crevicular fluid from asymptomatic apical periodontitis (AAP)-affected teeth at baseline and after endodontic treatment.

Methods

Patients with clinical diagnosis of AAP and healthy volunteers having indication of tooth extraction were recruited. Apical lesions and healthy periodontal ligaments, respectively, were homogenized or processed to obtain histological tissue sections. Matrix metalloproteinase -9 and -2 levels and/or activity were analyzed by Immunowestern blot, zymography and consecutive densitometric analysis, and their tissue localization was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. A second group of patients with AAP and indication of endodontic treatment was recruited. Gingival crevicular fluid was extracted from AAP-affected teeth at baseline, after endodontic treatment and healthy contralateral teeth. Total oxidant and antioxidant status were determined in homogenized tissue and GCF samples. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA v10 software with unpaired t test, Mann-Whitney test and Spearman's correlation.

Results

Activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 along with oxidant status were higher in apical lesions (p < 0.05). Total oxidant status correlated positively with matrix metalloproteinase-2 and lesion size (p < 0.05). Gingival crevicular fluid showed significantly lower levels of total antioxidant status in diseased teeth at baseline compared to controls and endodontically-treated groups.

Conclusions

Apical lesions display an oxidant imbalance along with increased activity of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 and might contribute to AAP progression. Oxidant imbalance can also be reflected in GCF from AAP-affected teeth and was restored to normal levels after conservative endodontic treatment. These mediators might be useful as potential biomarkers for chair-side complementary diagnostic of apical status in GCF.</p
