Beyond Bubbles: The role of asset prices in early-warning indicators

Asset prices have recently become a common topic in economic debate. Nevertheless, much time has been spent in determining if they effectively exhibit a bubble component, and not in examining whether asset prices affectively contain relevant information concerning future market developments. This paper is a first effort in Colombia in this direction, aimed towards the construction of early - warning indicators using financial and real variables. Results show evidence to support that there is relevant information embedded in these series, as all indicators (except the new housing price indicator) show a significant deviation for the year(s) prior to the 98-99 crisis. Additionally, the exercises here conducted show that the performance of asset price indicators is enhanced by including credit and investment. When the early-warning indicators are on, the role of the policy maker should be more active in the market; not necessarily in terms of altering interest rates, but in communicating with market agents, promoting portfolio and perspective (i.e. short and long-term) diversification and urging financial agents to make the best use of the tools that are available to them.Asset Price Bubbles, Early-Warning Indicators, Present Value Model, Financial Crisis, Prudential Regulation. Reactivity indexes for different geometries of palladium leads

Electronic transport through metallic break junctions or molecules is clearly dependent not only on the electronic structure of the central nanodevice connecting the leads, but also the shape and crystalline orientation of the contacts which can define the possible conduction channels. In this work we examine different geometries of contacts of palladium characterizing them through global and local reactivity indexes as electrophilicity, chemical hardness and Fukui functions. In molecules, these indicators are essentially defined by the energies of the frontier molecular orbitals and in solids they are related with the local and partial density of states. We use for this purpose an ab-initio based code (FIREBALL), applied to plane contacts with (001) fcc faces and also pyramidal tips grown following a (001) and (111) packaging. Impacto de las energías renovables sobre el precio de la electricidad

El propósito de este trabajo consiste en investigar los efectos de la generación de energía renovable sobre los precios finales de la electricidad mediante el uso de un modelo econométrico con microdatos. La base de partida es un trabajo de Gelabert et al. (2011) en el que se evalúan para un periodo diferente, el impacto agregado de estas fuentes de energía. El análisis se realiza con series de datos diarios de España desde el 1 de abril de 2014 hasta el 30 de abril del 2018, cuatro años más tarde del artículo mencionado. En este periodo, el sector de energía solar está más establecido con lo cual nos va a permitir obtener algunos resultados. También se han tratado de corregir algunos problemas de especificación econométrica encontrados en el citado trabajo. Al estudiar por separado el impacto de la energía eólica y solar en el precio final de la energía podemos observar, por primera vez, la aportación de cada una de ellas a la reducción de precios. Quizás este estudio podría añadir información sobre la decisión de adjudicación de nueva potencia instalada por distintas fuentes de energía en las futuras subastas

GESTIÓN, EVALUACIÓN Y ASESORAMIENTO PEDAGÓGICO EN LA ENSEÑANZA UNIVERSITARIA

La Secretaría de Gestión y Evaluación Académica de la Universidad Siglo 21 incluye entre sus funciones sostener un espacio de asesoramiento y evaluación a los docentes con el objetivo de mejorar la práctica educativa. Entre las acciones que se llevan a cabo se realiza un acompañamiento pedagógico que pretende objetivar las prácticas de la enseñanza a los fines de la reflexión, tanto en la modalidad presencial como en la modalidad a distancia. En el marco del ejercicio docente universitario se han ido generando instancias de evaluación y de asesoramiento orientados principalmente hacia la reflexión y revisión de las propuestas de enseñanza con el objeto de mejorar las prácticas, pensando que dicha transformación redunda positivamente en los procesos de aprendizaje y de formación inicial de los estudiantes. El asesoramiento pedagógico, ligado a la evaluación del ejercicio docente, se ha entendido como una práctica situada especializada de intervención, en la cual la relación entre asesor y asesorado se construye en un vínculo de respeto y reconocimiento mutuo. La figura del asesor se ha ido configurando en el marco de los condicionantes de la institución, en el cual se juegan las distintas trayectorias profesionales y personales, tanto la del asesor como las historias y posicionamientos de los asesorados. Se define como un trabajo de co-construcción que tiene que adquirir sentido para que tenga eficacia. En esta ponencia se presentarán algunos análisis a partir de la experiencia llevada a cabo desde el año 2009 en esta institución Se compartirán algunos resultados sobre los modos recurrentes que asumen las clases, desde un análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo; datos e interpretaciones que han alimentado favorablemente las prácticas de la enseñanza favoreciendo ajustes necesarios en el asesoramiento como ejercicio profesional. También se darán algunas referencias en torno al asesoramiento en los intercambios comunicativos en asignaturas que se dictan en entornos virtuales

Improving the fire behavior of flexible polyurethane foams using eco-friendly fillers

212 p.This research work is focused on the preparation and characterization of flexible polyurethane foams and also on the modification and introduction of different eco-friendly fillers into polyurethane formulations. Nowadays maximizing the sustainability of polymeric materials is of special interest due to the increasing environmental concern and the imminent depletion of fossil resources. In this work, the sustainability of the prepared materials is enhanced by using a renewable sourced polyol and selecting environmentally-friendly additives such as anionic clays (layered double hydroxides) and an industrial byproduct such as lignin, giving in this way added value to this abundant residue from pulp and paper industry.These eco-friendly fillers were selected not only due to their sustainable nature, but also because of their chemical structure and morphology that makes them of special interest in another topic with increased attention: the improvement of the fire behavior of polymeric materials.The increased use of polymers has boosted the dangers related to the development of violent fire scenarios, forcing industries to improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials by using different types of additives, such as halogenated compounds. These compounds reduce effectively the flammability of polymeric materials with the drawback of increased toxicity and thus, increased death hazard while contributing also to the depletion of the ozone layer owing to the highly toxic halogenated fumes released during polymer and additive combustion.For this reason, this work not only analyzes the effect on the properties of different eco-friendly additives in the properties of flexible polyurethane foams, but also explores their potential to be used as flame retardant agents.GMT Materials + Technologies Research Grou

The ghost of Tom Joad : the development of the character’s mythical aura through literature, cinema and music

Traballo Fin de Grao en Lingua e Literatura Inglesas. Curso 2015-2016In the research area of literature and other artistic expressions, I have not found many instances of analysis of the exchange between literature and music. Being aware of the relevance of this connection in contemporary cultural studies, I will endeavor to focus my attention in these fields and with that purpose in mind I will regard literature, cinema and music as equally fundamental cultural productions throughout the elaboration of this paper. In order to convey the potential of this interrelation for the construction of works that eventually assimilate into culture, I intend to analyze an artistic creation that has undergone a transposition through these three different manifestations and which, in the process, would have acquired the potentiality each of them can provide. John Steinbeck’s masterpiece novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939) seemed a very accurate example. Until the present date, the story has been transposed to the silver screen by John Ford – The Grapes of Wrath (1940) –, to popular music by Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen, and even to the theatre by Frank Galati in 1988. In this dissertation, I will not deal with the latter transposition of the story; instead I have chosen to go deeper into the web of internal influences that has developed among the novel, the film and the songs written out of the story of the Joad family as well as among their different authors
