Promoting Undergraduate Student Engagement in the SCRA Biennial Conference
There are many benefits for undergraduate students who attend professional conferences, such as having increased confidence for conducting research, gaining a better understanding of a field, developing a professional identity, and improving abilities to network. Professional organizations also benefit from undergraduate student attendance by improving field recognition and promoting the growth of the field through the development of future professionals. It is important to mentor students for professional conference attendance to decrease anxiety and provide a context in which they can benefit from conference attendance. The project described includes a systematic reflection from six undergraduate students from SUNY Old Westbury and their faculty mentor about the group’s attendance at the 2017 SCRA Biennial Conference. Logistics of getting to the conference and other preparation for the conference are also discussed. Recommendations are provided for faculty mentors to effectively mentor students before, during, and after conference attendance. Recommendations to conference organizers are provided to improve integration of undergraduate students in professional conferences
Between writer and reader : the relationship of the concept of audience to the teaching of composition
Traditionally the term rhetoric has been applied to the education of speakers on public occasions. Modem rhetoric has been characterized by a shift from spoken to written discourse and another shift from emphasis on the rhetor to emphasis on the audience. The purpose of this study is two-fold: to synthesize the major contributions to the study of audience, assessing their usefulness in the teaching of composition, and to analyze rhetorical action by presenting a model which will illuminate the relationship between writer and reader. The heritage of the rhetorical concept of audience can be traced back to the Rhetoric of Aristotle. The analysis of audience found in the Rhetoric can be of great value to students and teachers of written discourse. Aristotle treats rhetoric as an art which can be systematized, and is therefore teachable. Although Aristotelian rhetoric can be useful, it also has limitations for twentieth-century studies
The dynamics of local development represent the logic where different actors converge with different interests and motivations. It is in this context that the participation of the Community Action Boards (JAC) is recognized as an actor that promotes the creation and consolidation of social capital as a viable mechanism for improving the living conditions of the community through its management efficient. The research represented the way to recognize the attributes of social capital existing in the communal action and to determine the way in which its actions, framed in principles of solidarity, democracy and selfmanagement contribute to the positive transformation of social relations that mediate the local development of the neighborhood Special El Salado. Under a qualitative research model with a case study approach, we proceeded to determine the attributes of the existing social capital in the Community Action Boards of the El Salado special district of the municipality of Ibague, to finally define their level of incidence in the development of this locality. The main results of the research are related to the role of these organizations as articulating agents between the institutions that advance the projects and the community so that they respond to the needs and particular context of the social and economic dynamics of the commune. as well as the communal leadership of this territory is strengthened by the trust that the communities give to their actions, coming from their recognition as relevant and effective actors in the achievement of their social objectives. The construction and strengthening of the social capital from the JACs is conditioned by the low level of community participation in the actions that these advance as they assume a passive role in the management of resources that are oriented to the satisfaction of their needs. The social capital that is woven from relationships with other actors of the territory, exhibits important weaknesses because it does not achieve an effective relationship expressed in networks, from which it is possible to cohere the interests of all of them around the common objectives of economic and social development of the territory. VI Its action encounters obstacles in terms of access to external resources from which those present in the territory can be strengthened, especially those related to human capital and available cultural capital in which there is a low level of recognition and appreciation of the communal action on the part of the municipal administration that omits its knowledge with respect to the particular conditions of the context in which they operate; in this logic, the resources that reach the communities lose effectiveness because they are not addressed efficiently. In order to effectively meet the needs of the communities represented by the JACs of this case study, it is necessary to strengthen the social capital of the ladder with the other economic, social and political actors in order to promote the integral development of the commune, 7 Use depends on the improvement of the quality of life of the people, translated into a local development that emerges from social relations, which are generated by the presence of a strengthened social capital for which it is essential that the individual is part of a network of social relationships that promote reciprocity and trust

Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Romidepsin Induces HIV Expression in CD4 T Cells from Patients on Suppressive Antiretroviral Therapy at Concentrations Achieved by Clinical Dosing
Persistent latent reservoir of replication-competent proviruses in memory CD4 T cells is a major obstacle to curing HIV infection. Pharmacological activation of HIV expression in latently infected cells is being explored as one of the strategies to deplete the latent HIV reservoir. In this study, we characterized the ability of romidepsin (RMD), a histone deacetylase inhibitor approved for the treatment of T-cell lymphomas, to activate the expression of latent HIV. In an in vitro T-cell model of HIV latency, RMD was the most potent inducer of HIV (EC50 = 4.5 nM) compared with vorinostat (VOR; EC50 = 3,950 nM) and other histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors in clinical development including panobinostat (PNB; EC50 = 10 nM). The HIV induction potencies of RMD, VOR, and PNB paralleled their inhibitory activities against multiple human HDAC isoenzymes. In both resting and memory CD4 T cells isolated from HIV-infected patients on suppressive combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), a 4-hour exposure to 40 nM RMD induced a mean 6-fold increase in intracellular HIV RNA levels, whereas a 24-hour treatment with 1 μM VOR resulted in 2- to 3-fold increases. RMD-induced intracellular HIV RNA expression persisted for 48 hours and correlated with sustained inhibition of cell-associated HDAC activity. By comparison, the induction of HIV RNA by VOR and PNB was transient and diminished after 24 hours. RMD also increased levels of extracellular HIV RNA and virions from both memory and resting CD4 T-cell cultures. The activation of HIV expression was observed at RMD concentrations below the drug plasma levels achieved by doses used in patients treated for T-cell lymphomas. In conclusion, RMD induces HIV expression ex vivo at concentrations that can be achieved clinically, indicating that the drug may reactivate latent HIV in patients on suppressive cART
The Dialect of New mills: Linguistic Change in a North-West Derbyshire Community
Abstract
This research has two primary aims, both of which are intrinsically linked: firstly, to provide a description of the traditional dialect of New Mills on the levels of phonology (a systematic description), grammar and lexis; secondly, to analyse linguistic change that is currently occurring within the traditional dialect. The first of these aims is achieved by analysing the speech of the oldest members of the community. A qualitative age-based comparison enables the second objective to be undertaken. In order to record the traditional dialect, informants were selected who were most likely to use this stratum of speech (i.e. older working class male informants). Moreover, as this is essentially a study of linguistic change in apparent time, all independent variables, except age, are kept constant. Thus the data is taken from a socially homogenous group of speakers, who only vary by age, ranging from retired persons to teenagers. Theoretically, this should enable an analysis of change within the traditional dialect only, and thus provide a clearer picture as to the extent and nature of the change in progress. Attention is focused upon standardisation and / or levelling within the traditional dialect, and the possible factors, both linguistic and extra-linguistic (e.g., cultural / attitudinal) behind these processes
