The Beauty of Impertinence in World Literature from 1740 to 1977
Samuel Richardson, Jane Austen, Leo Tolstoy, and Jorge Amado have often been accused of making their heroines too beautiful. But these heroines are also accomplished in ways that demonstrate that their personalities are important. The ambiguous character of the novels by these authors has divided critics who find it difficult to categorize them as supporters of patriarchal oppression, or supporters of female autonomy. In face of this critical impasse, my research looks deeply into character description and character behavior to determine if these authors’ female characters should be viewed as pretty objects or not. As I demonstrate, in Samuel Richardson’s Pamela or Virtue Rewarded (1740), Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Mansfield Park (1814), Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace (1869), and Jorge Amado’s Gabriela Clove and Cinnamon (1958) and Tieta, the Goat Girl (1977), authors emphasize their heroine’s beauty in order to distract readers from their characters’ inappropriate acts. These acts are imprudent because they are considered improper for females in their society. Thus, by creating female characters who challenge social roles, these authors suggest successful ways for women to defy patriarchy without losing their power of agency
One-pot enzymatic resolution/separation of enantiomers using green solvents
BiotecnologiaIn the context of “green” chemistry and sustainable processes, the main goal of this work is to develop a process that would circumvent the current complications of racemic sec-alcohol separation, using alternative solvents and selective enzymatic resolution.
In this work the ability of enzymes to perform the resolution of sec-alcohols to obtain high added-value enantiomers is advantageously exploited in the production of pure chiral compounds. Candida rugosa lipase is capable of selectively converting one of the enantiomers of menthol into a different chemical compound with substantial different properties. Following this enzymatic catalysis, a separation method is used recurring to alternative solvents properties to separate the enantiomer that does not react obtaining a pure chiral compound.
The main goals of this research are to finding both a vinyl ester and an acid anhydride capable of reacting selectively with the racemic menthol through catalyzed reaction using Candida rugosa lipase and test independently the acylating agents at various parameters that influence the conversion and enantioselectivity of the process such as temperature, enzyme concentration, parallel chemical reaction and solvent effect.
Through this work we were successful in testing these two different chemical compounds obtaining high values for conversion and enantioselectivity. In the case of propionic anhydride we obtained 51% of conversion, 89% and 74% of enantiomeric excess of substrate and product, respectively, at 310.15 K in [Omim][PF6]. In the case of vinyl decanoate, we obtained 44.4% of conversion, 90.7% of enantiomeric excess of substrate, at 310.15 K in [Hmim][PF6]
How does technology influence knowledge sharing and application among team members?
Knowledge along with the human resource is the most valued asset of a company. Knowledge management has received much interested by researchers since it is a determinant key to perform efficiently. Due to society’s evolution, namely technological tools, on personal and professional routines, literature has improved in that sense and concluded that it can raise knowledge sharing facilitating the way employees work as well as the access to information, improving the performance. However, it is not known much about the interaction of this variables on team level.
In this study, we explored how technology influence team performance through knowledge sharing and application considering sense making leadership, meaning, how the relationship above works if there was a promotion of discussion among team members.
We tested our model in a sample of 54 teams (210 individuals). The results showed that there is a significant relationship between technology and knowledge sharing and hence team performance. Knowledge application does not have a direct implication, despite its indirectly impact on team’s performance. As a moderator, sense making leadership has a crucial role in the relationships described above in a way that can work as a substitute of technology, enhancing knowledge sharing and application when IT tools are not available.
Therefore, regarding practical implications of this study, since society is continuously improving being more technological over time, it is important to organizations to keep the investment on it, never forgetting the way it is managed into teams.O conhecimento em paralelo com os recursos humanos são o maior ativo numa empresa.
Loss given default : a backtesting exercise
Mestrado em Mathematical FinanceAfter January 2018, the new accounting standard IFRS 9 Financial Instruments was mandatory practice for all Financial Institutions. Introducing the new impairment model, which focus on expected credit losses (ECL) instead of incurred losses established previous in IAS 39 Measurement and Recognition.
According to the new standard, the risk parameters involved in the computation of the ECL are required to be periodically revised. The Loss Given Default (LGD) is a risk input which represents the loss in case of a financial instrument defaults. Hence, the aim of the present report is to validate the risk input through a back testing exercise, considering statistical tests.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Quality of working life of academics and researchers in the UK: the roles of contract type, tenure and university ranking
Quality of Working Life has been defined as the part of overall quality of life that is influenced by work. We developed a mediation model where home-work interface, job and career satisfaction, control at work, and working conditions are considered to be positively related to employee commitment and to the absence of stress at work. These two variables were ultimately related to general well-being. We considered possible differences between workers with different contract types (permanent vs. temporary), as well as the roles of tenure and average position of the University in the UK rankings. Quantitative survey data from 510 academics and researchers working in 8 British Universities were analysed via a multi-group analysis with structural equation modelling (SEM). Our model presented a good fit, and a bootstrapping analysis confirmed the significance of indirect effects. Significant differences were found between permanent and temporary workers and striking results were found regarding tenure

Overtime and quality of working life in academics and non-academics: the role of perceived work-life balance
While academic jobs generally provide a good degree of flexibility, academics also tend to work extra hours which can then lead to a poorer work-life balance. In this study, we compare academic vs. non-academic staff and anticipate that academics will generally report a poorer Quality of Working Life, a broad conceptualization of the overall work experience of employees. Secondly, we investigate whether the negative relationships between being an academic and Quality of Working Life variables are made worse by working extra hours, and moderated by the perception of having a balanced work-life interface. Our sample consisted of 1474 academic and 1953 non-academic staff working for nine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the United Kingdom (UK). Data were analyzed via structural equation modelling.
Results showed that academics tend to report a poorer Quality of Working Life than non-academics within HEIs, and this is exacerbated by their higher reported number of extra hours worked per week. The work-life balance of employees was found to moderate the negative relationships between academics (vs. non-academics) in variables such as perceived working conditions and employee commitment. We additionally found curvilinear relationships where employees who worked up to 10 extra hours were more satisfied with their job and career and had more control at work than those who either did not work extra hours or worked for a higher number of extra hours. These results extend previous research and provide new insights on work-life balance among academics and non-academics, which in turn may be relevant for the wellbeing practices of HEIs and wider HE policy making
Abstract : This study proposes to assay the role that photography plays as a new visual narrative in the Internetand the increasin gparticipation of design in this fluid spatial limit. Photojournalism aesthetics and language go through a transformation, with many options for interactivity and reading. The relationship between the reader and the image is not limited by the linearity ofpaper. New techniques and technologies challenge image producers, editors and media designers, to adapt to these changes and build a new photographic language. Blogs, for example, present alternative language and photography as a form of informative and graphic expression. Online journalism requires knowledge of multidisciplinary practices.Design and other fields, in communication, are gathered to build interactive content. These multidisciplinary practices converge and refocus journalism, as it became more visual. The fusion oftheselanguages, like photographyand video, are already demonstrated in news coverage such as the interactive multimedia documentary. Information is delivered in a new format, where the graphic design contributes to making the information clear and more accessible to the user.Throughout this research, in addition to theliterature review, interviews were conducted with experts, professionals of design and photojournalism. The changes and the new techniques are assimilated and incorporated for the media on the developed projects
