Some relations between the auditory system of the medulla and noise-intensity stimulus functions
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThis study was undertaken to determine the behavioral significance of certain anatomical structures. Lesions were produced in various auditory pathways of animals previously trained to respond to auditory and non-auditory stimuli. Postoperative behavior was compared to preoperative behavior and correlated with neuroanatomical data.
On the basis of historical evidence ventral acoustic structures were divided into 3 major pathways. The large fiber pathway originated in the posterior division of the ventral cochlear nucleus, coursed as the large fiber component of the trapezoid body and terminated in the contralateral nucleus of the trapezoid body. The superior olivary pathway arose as collaterals of the large fibers of the trapezoid body coursing dorsally to enter the superior olive. The small fiber pathway arose in the anterior division of the ventral cochlear nucleus, coursed as the small fiber component of the trapezoid body, passed through the superior olive and entered the accessory superior olive of the same side. A portion of the small fibers of the trapezoid body appeared to pass under the superior olive and have been shown to enter the contralateral accessory superior olive [TRUNCATED

Vegetation demographics in Earth System Models: A review of progress and priorities
Numerous current efforts seek to improve the representation of ecosystem ecology and vegetation demographic processes within Earth System Models (ESMs). These developments are widely viewed as an important step in developing greater realism in predictions of future ecosystem states and fluxes. Increased realism, however, leads to increased model complexity, with new features raising a suite of ecological questions that require empirical constraints. Here, we review the developments that permit the representation of plant demographics in ESMs, and identify issues raised by these developments that highlight important gaps in ecological understanding. These issues inevitably translate into uncertainty in model projections but also allow models to be applied to new processes and questions concerning the dynamics of real-world ecosystems. We argue that stronger and more innovative connections to data, across the range of scales considered, are required to address these gaps in understanding. The development of first-generation land surface models as a unifying framework for ecophysiological understanding stimulated much research into plant physiological traits and gas exchange. Constraining predictions at ecologically relevant spatial and temporal scales will require a similar investment of effort and intensified inter-disciplinary communication
Role of Imaging in the Staging and Response Assessment of Lymphoma:Consensus of the International Conference on Malignant Lymphomas Imaging Working Group
This article comprises the consensus reached to update guidance on the use of PET-CT for staging and response assessment for 18F FDG-avid lymphomas in clinical practice and late-phase trials
Ampullary cancers harbor ELF3 tumor suppressor gene mutations and exhibit frequent WNT dysregulation
The ampulla of Vater is a complex cellular environment from which adenocarcinomas arise to form a group of histopathologically heterogenous tumors. To evaluate the molecular features of these tumors, 98 ampullary adenocarcinomas were evaluated and compared to 44 distal bile duct and 18 duodenal adenocarcinomas. Genomic analyses revealed mutations in the WNT signaling pathway among half of the patients and in all three adenocarcinomas irrespective of their origin and histological morphology. These tumors were characterized by a high frequency of inactivating mutations of ELF3, a high rate of microsatellite instability, and common focal deletions and amplifications, suggesting common attributes in the molecular pathogenesis are at play in these tumors. The high frequency of WNT pathway activating mutation, coupled with small-molecule inhibitors of β-catenin in clinical trials, suggests future treatment decisions for these patients may be guided by genomic analysis

David Hume on Banking and Hoarding
David Hume opposes banks and favors hoarding. The only bank he reluctantly approves of is a public, 100% reserve bank. Other banks increase money supply and prices, hindering exports and economic growth. For Hume, a 100% reserve public bank would lead to ‘‘the destruction of paper-credit’’ ([1752] 1985, p. 285), fostering economic growth instead by preventing inflation. Additionally, a 100% reserve bank hoards a large quantity of gold and silver, which is available in case of national emergency
2016 International Land Model Benchmarking (ILAMB) Workshop Report
As earth system models (ESMs) become increasingly complex, there is a growing need for comprehensive and multi-faceted evaluation of model projections. To advance understanding of terrestrial biogeochemical processes and their interactions with hydrology and climate under conditions of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide, new analysis methods are required that use observations to constrain model predictions, inform model development, and identify needed measurements and field experiments. Better representations of biogeochemistryclimate feedbacks and ecosystem processes in these models are essential for reducing the acknowledged substantial uncertainties in 21st century climate change projections
