This article investigates the impact of the package design complexity on brand perception. 3 Champagne labels, representative of 3 graphic design styles observed on the market, were created and then tested among 305 consumers according to a between-subjects experiment. These 3 labels contain the same text but different graphic designs in order to manipulate the level of simplicity/complexity of the package design. The results allow the verification of different proposals from the literature. They demonstrate a significant impact of the package design\u27s level of simplicity on brand perception as well as on consumer\u27s buying choices. Is using ornaments still a crime? A three-dimensional full Stokes model of the grounding line dynamics: effect of a pinning point beneath the ice shelf

The West Antarctic ice sheet is confined by a large area of ice shelves, fed by inland ice through fast flowing ice streams. The dynamics of the grounding line, which is the line-boundary between grounded ice and the downstream ice shelf, has a major influence on the dynamics of the whole ice sheet. However, most ice sheet models use simplifications of the flow equations, as they do not include all the stress components, and are known to fail in their representation of the grounding line dynamics. Here, we present a 3-D full Stokes model of a marine ice sheet, in which the flow problem is coupled with the evolution of the upper and lower free surfaces, and the position of the grounding line is determined by solving a contact problem between the shelf/sheet lower surface and the bedrock. Simulations are performed using the open-source finite-element code Elmer/Ice within a parallel environment. The model's ability to cope with a curved grounding line and the effect of a pinning point beneath the ice shelf are investigated through prognostic simulations. Starting from a steady state, the sea level is slightly decreased to create a contact point between a seamount and the ice shelf. The model predicts a dramatic decrease of the shelf velocities, leading to an advance of the grounding line until both grounded zones merge together, during which an ice rumple forms above the contact area at the pinning point. Finally, we show that once the contact is created, increasing the sea level to its initial value does not release the pinning point and has no effect on the ice dynamics, indicating a stabilising effect of pinning points

An efficient implicit direct forcing immersed boundary method for incompressible flows

    No full text
International audienceA novel efficient implicit direct forcing immersed boundary method for incompressible flows with complex boundaries is presented. In the previous work [1], the calculation is performed on the Cartesian grid regardless of the immersed object, with a fictitious force evaluated on the Lagrangian points to mimic the presence of the physical boundaries. However the explicit direct forcing method [1] fails to accurately impose the non-slip boundary condition on the immersed interface. In the present work, the calculation is based on the implicit treatment of the artificial force while in an effective way of system iteration. The accuracy is also improved by solving the Navier-Stokes equation with the rotational incremental pressure- correction projection method of Guermond and Shen [2]. Numerical simulations performed with the proposed method are in good agreement with those in the literature

Is Using Ornaments Still a Crime? Package Design Complexity and Brand Perception with Application to Champagne Labels

This article investigates the impact of the package design complexity on brand perception. This variable is particularly interesting because it is a choice which must be done by each brand manager no matter the product category. The packaging has been studied in many ways, and we already know its importance. A lot of existing researches are focused on the importance of its shape, its colours or its letter type. But only few studies have been done about the impact of the stylistic choice between simple and complex design on the brand perception. Furthermore, the consumer behaviour and design research both agree that the degree of simplicity of the packaging design has a significant impact on consumer’s attitudes towards a brand. In the case of this study, we defined two overall stylistic trends which come from the art literature: simple design versus overloaded design. In order to study the impact of the complexity degree, we created three labels: two representing the previously exposed styles and another one to study the relevance of a medium-loaded design. These labels were created in partnership with a printing company, present in Champagne since 1910. The three labels have the same text but different graphic designs in order to vary the degree of simplicity/complexity of the packaging observed on the market. Then, they were tested among 305 consumers according to a between-subjects experiment. The results allow the verification of different proposals from the literature: previous researches show that a simple design communicates an authentic and honest value which is also demonstrated in our study as the bottle with the simplest design is perceived as the most successful. Also, the bottle with an overloaded design is perceived as cheerful, imaginative and feminine as demonstrated by previous researches. This study demonstrates a significant impact of the package design’s level of simplicity on the brand perception as well as on consumer’s buying choices

Growth rate degeneracies in kinematic dynamos

We consider the classical problem of kinematic dynamo action in simple steady flows. Due to the adjointness of the induction operator, we show that the growth rate of the dynamo will be exactly the same for two types of magnetic boundary conditions: the magnetic field can be normal (infinite magnetic permeability, also called pseudovacuum) or tangent (perfect electrical conductor) to the boundaries of the domain. These boundary conditions correspond to well-defined physical limits often used in numerical models and relevant to laboratory experiments. The only constraint is for the velocity field u to be reversible, meaning there exists a transformation changing u into −u. We illustrate this surprising property using S2T2 type of flows in spherical geometry inspired by [Dudley and James, Proc. R. Soc. London A 425, 407 (1989)]. Using both types of boundary conditions, it is shown that the growth rates of the dynamos are identical, although the corresponding magnetic eigenmodes are drastically different
