Corrections to the Eretmocerus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) of Egypt and the validation of two new species
Condensation transitions in a model for a directed network with weighted links
An exactly solvable model for the rewiring dynamics of weighted, directed
networks is introduced. Simulations indicate that the model exhibits two types
of condensation: (i) a phase in which, for each node, a finite fraction of its
total out-strength condenses onto a single link; (ii) a phase in which a finite
fraction of the total weight in the system is directed into a single node. A
virtue of the model is that its dynamics can be mapped onto those of a
zero-range process with many species of interacting particles -- an exactly
solvable model of particles hopping between the sites of a lattice. This
mapping, which is described in detail, guides the analysis of the steady state
of the network model and leads to theoretical predictions for the conditions
under which the different types of condensation may be observed. A further
advantage of the mapping is that, by exploiting what is known about exactly
solvable generalisations of the zero-range process, one can infer a number of
generalisations of the network model and dynamics which remain exactly

A variable rate speech compressor for mobile applications
One of the most promising speech coder at the bit rate of 9.6 to 4.8 kbits/s is CELP. Code Excited Linear Prediction (CELP) has been dominating 9.6 to 4.8 kbits/s region during the past 3 to 4 years. Its set back however, is its expensive implementation. As an alternative to CELP, the Base-Band CELP (CELP-BB) was developed which produced good quality speech comparable to CELP and a single chip implementable complexity as reported previously. Its robustness was also improved to tolerate errors up to 1.0 pct. and maintain intelligibility up to 5.0 pct. and more. Although, CELP-BB produces good quality speech at around 4.8 kbits/s, it has a fundamental problem when updating the pitch filter memory. A sub-optimal solution is proposed for this problem. Below 4.8 kbits/s, however, CELP-BB suffers from noticeable quantization noise as a result of the large vector dimensions used. Efficient representation of speech below 4.8 kbits/s is reported by introducing Sinusoidal Transform Coding (STC) to represent the LPC excitation which is called Sine Wave Excited LPC (SWELP). In this case, natural sounding good quality synthetic speech is obtained at around 2.4 kbits/s
On Normal ordering and Canonical transformations in Thermal Field Theory
We look at a real scalar field in thermal equilibrium in the context of the
new normal ordering and field split defined by Evans and Steer. We show that
the field split defines a natural canonical transformation, but that this

Johnson-Kendall-Roberts theory applied to living cells
Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory is an accurate model for strong adhesion
energies of soft slightly deformable material. Little is known about the
validity of this theory on complex systems such as living cells. We have
addressed this problem using a depletion controlled cell adhesion and measured
the force necessary to separate the cells with a micropipette technique. We
show that the cytoskeleton can provide the cells with a 3D structure that is
sufficiently elastic and has a sufficiently low deformability for JKR theory to
be valid. When the cytoskeleton is disrupted, JKR theory is no longer
applicable
Solvent mediated interactions between model colloids and interfaces: A microscopic approach
We determine the solvent mediated contribution to the effective potentials
for model colloidal or nano- particles dispersed in a binary solvent that
exhibits fluid-fluid phase separation. Using a simple density functional theory
we calculate the density profiles of both solvent species in the presence of
the `colloids', which are treated as external potentials, and determine the
solvent mediated (SM) potentials. Specifically, we calculate SM potentials
between (i) two colloids, (ii) a colloid and a planar fluid-fluid interface,
and (iii) a colloid and a planar wall with an adsorbed wetting film. We
consider three different types of colloidal particles: colloid A which prefers
the bulk solvent phase rich in species 2, colloid C which prefers the solvent
phase rich in species 1, and `neutral' colloid B which has no strong preference
for either phase, i.e. the free energies to insert the colloid into either of
the coexisting bulk phases are almost equal. When a colloid which has a
preference for one of the two solvent phases is inserted into the disfavored
phase at statepoints close to coexistence a thick adsorbed `wetting' film of
the preferred phase may form around the colloids. The presence of the adsorbed

Space Station Technology Summary
The completion of the Space Station Propulsion Advanced Technology Programs established an in-depth data base for the baseline gaseous oxygen/gaseous hydrogen thruster, the waste gas resistojet, and the associated system operations. These efforts included testing of a full end-to-end system at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in which oxygen and hydrogen were generated from water by electrolysis at 6.89 MPa (1,000 psia), stored and fired through the prototype thruster. Recent end-to-end system tests which generate the oxygen/hydrogen propellants by electrolysis of water at 20.67 MPa (3,000 psia) were completed on the Integrated Propulsion Test Article (IPTA) at NASA-Johnson Space Center (JSC). Resistojet testing has included 10,000 hours of life testing, plume characterization, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing. Extensive 25-lbf thruster testing was performed defining operating performance characteristics across the required mixture ratio and thrust level ranges. Life testing has accumulated 27 hours of operation on the prototype thruster. A total of seven injectors and five thrust chambers were fabricated to the same basic design. Five injectors and three thrust chambers designed to incorporate improved life, performance, and producibility characteristics are ready for testing. Five resistojets were fabricated and tested, with modifications made to improve producibility. The lessons learned in the area of producibility for both the O2/H2 thrusters and for the resistojet have resolved critical fabrication issues. The test results indicate that all major technology issues for long life and reliability for space station application were resolved
Multiple tidal disruption flares in the active galaxy IC 3599
Tidal disruption events occur when a star passes too close to a massive black
hole and it is totally ripped apart by tidal forces. It may also happen that
the star is not close enough to the black hole to be totally disrupted and a
less dramatic event might happen. If the stellar orbit is bound and highly
eccentric, just like some stars in the centre of our own Galaxy, repeated
flares should occur. When the star approaches the black hole tidal radius at
periastron, matter might be stripped resulting in lower intensity outbursts
recurring once every orbital period. We report on Swift observations of a
recent bright flare from the galaxy IC 3599 hosting a middle-weight black hole,
where a possible tidal disruption event was observed in the early 1990s. By
light curve modelling and spectral fitting we can consistently account for the
events as the non-disruptive tidal stripping of a star into a highly eccentric
orbit. The recurrence time is 9.5 yr. IC 3599 is also known to host a
low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. Tidal stripping from this star over
several orbital passages might be able to spoon-feed also this activity.Comment: Accepted for publication to Astronomy & Astrophysic

Here we present data from 582 individual trees of eight taxa in the form of summary variables relating to the allometric relationships between trunk diameter, height, crown height, crown radius and trunk radial growth rate to the tree's light environment and diameter at breast height. In addition the raw data files containing the variables from which the summary data were obtained. Large sample sizes with longitudinal data spanning 22 years make these datasets useful for future studies concerned with the way trees change in size and shape over their life-span
