A Survey of Proper Motion Stars. XVII. A Deficiency of Binary Stars on Retrograde Galactic Orbits and the Possibility that omega Centauri is Related to the Effect
We find a deficiency of binary stars moving on strongly retrograde Galactic
orbits. No binary deficiencies are seen for U or W velocities, however. From
theoretical analyses, we rule out preferential disruption of pre-existing
binary stars due to encounters with massive perturbers. We also rule out
globular clusters as the source of the effect since prograde motions are more
likely to create such an effect. We search for star streams and find one
possible candidate, but it is not on a retrograde orbit and probably represents
the remains of a cluster that has passed too near the Galactic center. Based on
a very small number of stars, we find that about the right fraction of stars on
retrograde Galactic orbits share some chemical similarities to the cluster
omega Cen, suggesting that its parent galaxy could be the explanation.Comment: To appear in the Astronomical Journal (March 2005 issue
High resolution elemental abundance analysis of the Hyades Supercluster
The existence of a kinematically defined moving group of stars centred at U =
-40, V = -17 km/s referred to as the Hyades Supercluster, has been suggested as
the debris of an originally large star forming event, with its core being the
present day Hyades open cluster. Using high-resolution UVES spectra, we present
elemental abundances for a range of alpha, Fe-peak and neutron-capture elements
for 26 proposed supercluster stars. Our results show that the sample stars
display a heterogeneous abundance distribution, with a clump around [Fe/H] =
+0.15. We also calculate stellar radial velocities and U,V,W space velocities.
Enforcing a strict chemical and kinematical membership criteria, we find 4
supercluster stars share the Hyades open cluster abundances and kinematics,
while many of the remaining stars fit the disc field kinematics and abundance
range. We discuss our findings in the context of the Hyades supercluster being
a dispersed star-forming remnant, a stellar stream of purely dynamical origin
or a result of several processes.Comment: accepted by MNRA
Step by step optimization of a sperm cryopreservation protocol for spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor Olafsen, 1772)
Spotted wolffish Anarhichas minor reproduction in captivity is dependent on in vitro fertilization. However, low sperm volume with relatively low cell concentration and the lack of gametes synchronization (simultaneous availability of mature eggs and sperm) represent a challenge for the industry. Thus, the development of protocols for sperm storage are crucial. Four sequential experiments were conducted to optimize a sperm cryopreservation protocol for this species. First, three different cryoprotectants (DMSO; 1, 2-propanediol; and methanol) at different concentrations (5, 10, and 20%) were tested for their toxicity. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were detected between the control samples and cryoprotectants at concentration up to 10% DMSO, 10% propanediol, and 20% methanol in terms of motility parameters. Second, using the highest non-toxic concentrations of cryoprotectants, sperm was cryopreserved in 0.5 mL straws, at different distances from the liquid nitrogen (1.5, 2.5, 4.5, and 7.5 cm) that correspond to different freezing rates. Motility parameters after freezing/thawing decreased for all the cryoprotectants (p  0.05) between the two thawing rates. The best results were obtained using 10% DMSO. Finally, the fertilization capacity of cryopreserved sperm (10% DMSO and thawed at 5 °C for 1 min) was tested against fresh sperm using two spermatozoa:egg ratios and 4 h gametes contact time. The ratio of eggs with normal cell cleavage, abnormal cleavage or undeveloped were counted at the 2-4 cell stage. Cryopreserved sperm showed lower fertilization capacity at a concentration of 5 × 104 spermatozoa:egg compared with fresh sperm (p  0.05). To cryopreserve spotted wolffish sperm it is recommended to use 10% DMSO, loaded in 0.5 mL straws, freeze at a height between 4.5 (-14.05 °C/min) and 7.5 cm (-5.9 °C/min) from liquid nitrogen for 10 min and thaw for 1 min at 5 °C (177.9 °C/min). Comparative assessment of the effects of climate change on heat- and cold-related mortality in the United Kingdom and Australia.
BACKGROUND: High and low ambient temperatures are associated with increased mortality in temperate and subtropical climates. Temperature-related mortality patterns are expected to change throughout this century because of climate change. OBJECTIVES: We compared mortality associated with heat and cold in UK regions and Australian cities for current and projected climates and populations. METHODS: Time-series regression analyses were carried out on daily mortality in relation to ambient temperatures for UK regions and Australian cities to estimate relative risk functions for heat and cold and variations in risk parameters by age. Excess deaths due to heat and cold were estimated for future climates. RESULTS: In UK regions, cold-related mortality currently accounts for more than one order of magnitude more deaths than heat-related mortality (around 61 and 3 deaths per 100,000 population per year, respectively). In Australian cities, approximately 33 and 2 deaths per 100,000 population are associated every year with cold and heat, respectively. Although cold-related mortality is projected to decrease due to climate change to approximately 42 and 19 deaths per 100,000 population per year in UK regions and Australian cities, heat-related mortality is projected to increase to around 9 and 8 deaths per 100,000 population per year, respectively, by the 2080s, assuming no changes in susceptibility and structure of the population. CONCLUSIONS: Projected changes in climate are likely to lead to an increase in heat-related mortality in the United Kingdom and Australia over this century, but also to a decrease in cold-related deaths. Future temperature-related mortality will be amplified by aging populations. Health protection from hot weather will become increasingly necessary in both countries, while protection from cold weather will be still needed
Optical polarisation variability of radio loud narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies. Search for long rotations of the polarisation plane
Narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1s) constitute the AGN subclass
associated with systematically smaller black hole masses. A few radio loud ones
have been detected in MeV -- GeV energy bands by Fermi and evidence for the
presence of blazar-like jets has been accumulated. In this study we wish to
quantify the temporal behaviour of the optical polarisation, fraction and
angle, for a selected sample of radio loud NLSy1s. We also search for rotations
of the polarisation plane similar to those commonly observed in blazars. We
have conducted R-band optical polarisation monitoring of a sample of 10 RL
NLSy1s 5 of which have been previously detected by Fermi. The dataset includes
observations with the RoboPol, KANATA, Perkins and Steward polarimeters. In the
cases where evidences for long rotations of the polarisation plane are found,
we carry out numerical simulations to assess the probability that they are
caused by intrinsically evolving EVPAs instead of observational noise. Even our
moderately sampled sources show indications of variability, both in
polarisation fraction and angle. For the four best sampled objects in our
sample we find multiple periods of significant polarisation angle variability.
In the two best sampled cases, namely J1505+0326 and J0324+3410, we find
indications for three long rotations. We show that although noise can induce
the observed behaviour, it is much more likely that the apparent rotation is
caused by intrinsic evolution of the EVPA. To our knowledge this is the very
first detection of such events in this class of sources. In the case of the
largest dataset (J0324+3410) we find that the EVPA concentrates around a
direction which is at 49.3\degr to the 15-GHz radio jet implying a projected
magnetic field at an angle of 40.7\degr to that axis.Comment: Accepted for publication in section 2. Astrophysical processes of

Do Poverty Reduction Strategies Help Achieve The Millennium Development Goals?
This paper examines the partnership in development policies between the World Bank/IMF and the United Nations. Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) are instruments used by the Washington institutions to achieve the Millenium Development Goals (MDG) initiated by the UN. We review and interpret the genesis and development of MDGs and PRSPs in this perspective, and examine their institutional connections. The analytical aim of the paper is to conduct the first investigation in the literature of the impact of PRSP features on progress in achieving the MDGs. We introduce a unique dataset of PRSP indicators and match these to MDG data on MDG indicators. We find robust effects of PRSP features on the youth literacy, women’s employment and child mortality indicators. The quantitative evidence suggests that PRSPs appear to become more effective over time, and that more focused PRSPs, more participatory PRSP formulation, and better proposed policy actions may enhance their effectiveness in achieving MDGs. We discuss these findings in the context of other PRSP assessments in the literature and propose future research avenuesDevelopment Policies, Millenium Development Goals
Chromospheric activity, lithium and radial velocities of single late-type stars possible members of young moving groups
We present here high resolution echelle spectra taken during three observing
runs of 14 single late-type stars identified in our previous studies (Montes et
al. 2001b, hereafter Paper I) as possible members of different young stellar
kinematic groups (Local Association (20 - 150 Myr), Ursa Major group (300 Myr),
Hyades supercluster (600 Myr), and IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr)). Radial
velocities have been determined by cross correlation with radial velocity
standard stars and used together with precise measurements of proper motions
and parallaxes taken from Hipparcos and Tycho-2 Catalogues, to calculate
Galactic space motions (U, V, W) and to apply Eggen's kinematic criteria. The
chromospheric activity level of these stars have been analysed using the
information provided for several optical spectroscopic features (from the Ca II
H & K to Ca II IRT lines) that are formed at different heights in the
chromosphere. The Li I 6707.8 AA line equivalent width (EW) has been determined
and compared in the EW(Li I) versus spectral type diagram with the EW(Li I) of
stars members of well known young open clusters of different ages, in order to
obtain an age estimation. All these data allow us to analyse in more detail the
membership of these stars in the different young stellar kinematic groups.
Using both kinematic and spectroscopic criteria we have confirmed PW And, V368
Cep, V383 Lac, EP Eri, DX Leo, HD 77407, and EK Dra as members of the Local
Association and V834 Tau, pi^{1} UMa, and GJ 503.2 as members of the Ursa Major

Resolving the pulsations of subdwarf B stars: HS 0039+4302, HS 0444+0458, and an examination of the group properties of resolved pulsators
We continue our program of single-site observations of pulsating subdwarf B
(sdB) stars and present the results of extensive time series photometry of HS
0039+4302 and HS 0444+0458. Both were observed at MDM Observatory during the
fall of 2005. We extend the number of known frequencies for HS 0039+4302 from 4
to 14 and discover one additional frequency for HS 0444+0458, bringing the
total to three. We perform standard tests to search for multiplet structure,
measure amplitude variations, and examine the frequency density to constrain
the mode degree .
Including the two stars in this paper, 23 pulsating sdB stars have received
follow-up observations designed to decipher their pulsation spectra. It is
worth an examination of what has been detected. We compare and contrast the
frequency content in terms of richness and range and the amplitudes with
regards to variability and diversity. We use this information to examine
observational correlations with the proposed pulsation mechanism as
